A living legend. The people in this audience that are walking around like there's nothing better to do while this old guy plays haven't got a clue what is being played out on stage right here with Tom. "I'd give a hundred dollars" to be sitting in this audience. No, I'd give a lot more than that. This man's music deserves top notch respect.
Tom T. Hall died at age 85 on 8-20-21. This song charted about 50 years ago at this time. I had the privilege of meeting him at a fair in 1985. Helluva nice guy. RIP, Storyteller!
I was doing my work around the house humming this tune.. After I was done working I just had to come and give it a listen.. Rest easy Mr. Hall... God bless.
That's how you get foot fungus. Each generation has their own voice. I love Tom T. but I don't think he looked down at the young bucks who came after him. (.... and fillies lol)
About a week before this concert, my wife asked me which living artist I'd most like to see play live. It took about 3 seconds to decide on Tom T. Hall. A day or two later she decided to look to see if he was performing anywhere, and found that this tribute show was going on just a few days later! I made some emergency changes to my schedule at work and we were off to the show! It was a wonderful, intimate concert with my favorite songwriter. Discovered Eric Brace & Peter Cooper that night too!
Tom T. Hall, one of the greatest entertainers and song writers of all time. I was very privileged to have met T. in Waco, Texas at the Heart Of Texas Rodeo. I sat with him in his bus and we talked as if we had known each other for years. He was very down to earth, wasn't stuck up. I asked him the origin about some of those songs he sang and wrote, and his reply was, " Personal experience.
I’ll remember the year That Tom T Hall died Nobody ever new it But I went out on the woods And I cried I know there is a lot of big preachers Who know a lot more than I do Could be that the good lord Likes a little guitar pick’n to
You go mr. Tom T. You’re one of the best country western music Phenomenon’s. You made an impact on all country music. Tom T. Hall is right there with some of the greatest. Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Buck Owens and let’s not forget who he influenced Dwight Yokum. So many stars. So Tom T Hall was the person that in fluenced many musicians
My father died when I was nine.. this song was on the radio at that time and got me through and I found my passion for playing music. I have been a Tom T. Hall fan ever since.
I was privileged to see Tom live in Madison, WI many years ago. Must have been in the mid-late 70's. He put on a great show. He is truly someone who cares about people. At least that's how he comes across in the way he talks to you from the stage. He is an all around great entertainer. I once read he couldn't get anybody famous to sing his early songs so he decided, NUTS! I don't sing so good but I'll sing them myself anyway. I think he sings just fine. Beats all that screaming modern music.
One of the greatest 3 chord storytelling songs ever written. I think just about every musician can relate in one way or another to this story. It touches my heart.
My daughters account but I was friends with a guy who lived in Pembroke Ontario who could do this song to a T, Mr Keith Jones, RIP Keith, anytime he was jamming and I came along he would always play, The Year Clayton Delaney Died
What can you say about Tom T except thank you for your talent sir. It seems our country has forgotten the good in people and can only dwell on the hate from our past. Story tellers like Tom T are needed more than ever. He now knows how all this ends, but we still have to endure till our end comes. RIP.
The word greatness is over used, but not with this musical genius. If you haven’t, please do yourself, family and friends the honor of exposing yourselves to this man’s genius, which I hope gives just a little solace.
Tom T. Hall, a consummate storyteller, song writer. I loved this song so much, also old dogs, children, and watermelon wine...and many more. Sorry you felt you had to go cuz it really hurt this fan. May God give you rest...
He was one of my favorite artists in the 1970's when I was just a kid. He had so many great songs. My favorite was "I Love". I had that single on a 45 and wore it out. So sad he took his own life. I hope he realized how many people he touched with his music and songwriting talent.
Not one of you have mentioned Olive Hill KY where he was from and learned his craft. My mom was born and raised there. And that's where you get true country music. Home
It's sad that we didn't have a few more years for TTH to further ripen vocally the songs he wrote. These renditions that are so much more moving than the originals.
Girl has enough in the middle of the great intro story?!! After the first line, bearded gent quits for the lobby. Then more drift out. This is Tom T Hall people! The kids with the cameras know his value.
That is so sad. They obviously did not know how lucky they are. They probably went back to their truck and played some Toby Keith. I'm a punk rocker and you'd have to drag me while I was kicking and screaming to get me to leave the room.
What a great song! I so prefer this version to the released single back in the day. This version is just so pure and simple and beautiful and heartfelt with only his voice and the guitar accompaniment. The older version seems, in comparison, over orchestrated and (to me) the trumpet playing takes away from the beauty and clarity of Hall's wonderful voice. What a poet and master of lyric! And the fact that he is now a much older man gives the underlying themes of mortality and the passing of time and youth so poignant.
With utmost respect to your opinion and Mr. Hall whom I have been a fan of for over 45 years. Hank Williams is in a category of his own. There is no comparison to anyone living or that has passed on with Hank Williams. In any musical field or style. Hank stands alone as the greatest. Just my humble, but long lived and informed opinion. Love Tom T Hall, he is special. Again with utmost respect, Sgt. Mullins
@@sgt.mullins I don't think the commenter was suggesting that Tom T. was on par with Hank W., they were suggesting that Clayton was a metaphor for how Tom T. felt when Hank W. died.
Hard to believe yet another legendary storyteller of country has passed away.
His passing brought me here. Godspeed Tom my friend.
Me as welll.great storyteller...love his songs...

I met him in 1985 at the Mannington District Fair. We shook hands. Helluva nice guy and a credit to his profession into the bargain.
