  • This video is dedicated to our colleague, the late Teo Peng Seng.
    Never work with children or animals?Nothing tests an a portraitist's speed and skill and concentration more than the challenge of drawing little chidren.Here,artists of the place du tertre employ different techniques ,but above all stretch themselves and dig deep... because they know these portraits mean so much to the parents,and believe me,no true artist wants to see Mum and Dad walk away with a hint of sadness in their eyes.

    I have done so many kids during sittings, that i should just write a book on the psychology of drawing children. I'm still reeling in from 'Look Normal......'. Hahahahaha!!! How many times i've been through that!

    @cardellacole4 I used to keep the babies amused by dangling a bunch of keys or getting the parents to do the dangling for me.I stopped doing this after one sitter's mother flew back to Madrid with my studio/house keys!

    Stunning values. Been suffering with artists block lately, and this helped snap me out of it. Thanks Davy.

    @EraserKneaded Martine is a very very good artist.One thing especially sets her apart: she changes technique for each sitter:sanguine,half-colour,graphite you-name-it! This means she never gets into a 'factory' mindset and the drawings are always bursting with vitality.

    Davy you put it well when you said kids are like moving targets, especially kids of this age. What beautiful work. I feel so terrible for what happened to Seng :(

      Babies can only really be drawn when they are sleeping.Or from photographs; From the age of 5, some children can sit very well..it depends whether they really want to pose,or have been forced to pose by their parents! Teo's story is indeed a tragic one.He was fine artist and a good friend.

    @cardellacole4 The best way to learn the language is to live here for a while.Actually the vocab is similar:table=table chair= chaise,beer=bierre,art=art! You'll soon get the hang of it... Its not like learning chinese.and everybody speaks english here anyway.

    @cardellacole4 At the beginning of the 20th century rents were dirt cheap.Now the property prices in Montmartre are sky high,and the price of rental accomadation has risen accordingly.Your best bet is a no-star hotel...some of the artists live in these hotels on a long term rental basis.still quite expensive:15-20 euros per night.

    Sir, I wish I could be a great Artist... Do I need a school for it? Can I do it just by practicing?? Or it's a must that I must have basic concepts....
    Sir how do you master all these amazing workshops
    Thank you in advance for your reply

    • @DavyLimvideos
      @DavyLimvideos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can learn a great deal by yourself.Carry a sketch book.Try to draw from life as much as you can.It is stimulating to learn with others so I would encourage you to join an art class.A good teacher will help you correct basic flaws.I think learning to reproduce with accuracy everything nature offers us,whether it is an apple,a face,or a landscape is very important.learning to draw comes first,because it is the basis behind every great painting.

      Davy Lim thank you so much, sir for your kind words... There's was an artist who once told me about the light and shadows.... Till now I only knew light and shadows... Here in a place where I live there is no Art class... I have the spirit to do Arts... I can see a field of Arts, but there's no materials to make use of that land... No resources... No support.... However I tried hard to Convert my ideas into something that please me much...
