Mikey was part of the testing trials for this yarn in Spring 2023 and it went to market in the middle of December 2023. He's had practice and also problem-solving this yarn for the best tips based on real experiences.
In this video, Mikey will cover the pattern used. He will share tips on critical things to look for and how to cheat the system by either changing the hook size to hit the transitions perfectly and/or changing the tension of the yarn.

Stating the slip knot at a certain measurement would create a problem for me. Out of habit, I just pick up my yarn make my slip knot and begin. I would automatically forget to measure.

I love granny squares but hate weaving in ends. I may have to give this a try. I am 75 so not sure if it will work for me but want to try it out. I learned to both knit and crochet using RedHeart yarn so I always have to try the new ones.

This is a great idea. If you've ever done color pooling you would know that this will come out fine with right size hook n avg tension. I think it's great n will be on lookout for it. Just hope i like the color combos 😁 thx

I love the concept and it’s totally worth a project to me. Only thing is, even if you perfect your tension, every round’s gonna be a nail-biter! But that same thing would get me churning them out.

yeah, i feel like my tension is pretty consistent, but quite a few of them id have to undo the last couple of clusters to get the end to match up. still prefer it to cutting and tying new colours though!

    Three things:
First I want to say that I love Red Heart and Mikey.
Second, I like this idea but I think for me it will take away the relaxation of crocheting from me. There is no watching television while using this yarn 😅
Third, is there enough yarn to sew the squares together?

This is brilliant! Looking forward to additional color combos. If you are too, make sure to buy some to encourage Red Heart to keep developing this idea. Mikey, thanks for your great tutorial so we won't give up when faced with problems. I agree, our own personal tensioning is the biggest obstacle in this and many other crocheting situations.
PS: how to start the beginning slip knot was my first question❤

I absolutely LOVE the concept.....and here comes the but, BUT I don't want to have to constantly frog and change the hook size and/or tension. I tried multiple times using this yarn and did ALL the things needed to get the correct color change for each row and it just stresses me out!! I crochet to help me relax and destress so this yarn is NOT for me for doing granny squares.....and here comes another but, BUT I absolutely LOVE the color ways this yarn so I use the granny square yarn to make other beautiful crocheted projects. 😊

Thank you for this informative and succinct tutorial! Quite a few videos I've found are people dogging the pattern or some other aspect of this yarn -- which is disheartening when I have several skeins sitting on top of my stash. While getting the hook size and tension down with a granny square pattern I don't normally use has been challenging with this yarn, you give some solid advice on how to troubleshoot to get it down. Anything preset like this is going to have a learning curve. It's all in your attitude whether you end up frustrated by the challenge. I'm an intermediate crocheter (crochetist?), and the expectations of this pattern and the length of each color made me realize that my natural tension is high. I had to size up to a 6mm hook to hit each round and work more relaxed than I normally do. "Don't lose your mind" has been my catchphrase working up these granny squares. Thanks for a great video!

Love love love this yarn. Here's the secret: ditch instructions on the back of label. Use a 6.0 (J) crochet hook, chain only two in the corners (instead of three), and leave out the chain one between clusters. This way you will always have yarn of each color left over at the end of your round. Then instead of stressing, simply slip stitch along top until you get to the next start of a cluster where your new color lines up. Works every time without fail and you can't tell. The key is to be flexible and this yarn will make beautiful granny squares for everyone!

I think the thing keeping me from trying it is knowing RH isn't super careful about joining their skeins and I'm concerned there may be a careless join at the manufacturing level. I am sorely tempted to try it anyway, at least one skein.

Interesting concept...and as always thank you Mikey for your honest review, tips and tutorial. 🤗 Being a crafty old crocheter😉 I actually see this as a "pooling" yarn 🤔...so, might have to get a skein just to dip into the pool😂. BTW...I usually turn my granny squares over on every other row...1,3,5, rows would go the same direction,...2,4,6, would be the flip side. To me it makes the granny square a little less "square" and more stylish...might have to get a skein to try that out. Seems like I will have lots of fun this winter. (Wonder how it will work on a round loom...probably like a pool.) Thanks, Mikey..you da' best 🤗

Alright, I finally bought a couple skeins of this yarn, and I have my first ever granny square! Juan the Yarn Addict got me going on crochet in October. I'm really enjoying it. Since I'm new, I don't have any muscle memory or "the way I've always done it", or "that's how I was taught". I did find that the first color had to be done with a 5mm hook and tight stitches. I hit all the marks using 2 hooks (5mm and 5.25mm). It was fun and I will probably make a blanket with the squares.

I think this yarn is interesting, but I never use that many color in theme based granny squares. Most of my granny squares are made from leftover yarn and I usually just tie in a new color as I go. I use one main color to finish the square and complete the blanket, but all my squares will look different. I like this better than working all the individual rounds and then having to weave in the ends. This also mean each of my granny square blankets will all be different and unique. If I ever get this yarn I would purposely not try to make look like a prefect granny square.😊

Excellent review and tutorial! This was my first time trying this new yarn and yours was the first video I chose to learn how to get it right. And I did! Yay! This really is a game changer, as I am one of the many crocheters who hate weaving in all those ends, too! I hope they keep coming up with more and more color combos! Thanks for the great tips and instructions!

I received my yarn today. Your tips were excellent! I found for me using an H hook throughout works best and tightening up on the last side if I need to. What a game changer for granny square crochet enjoyment with two ends to weave in. Just awesome. Thanks for this great tutorial!

Thank you for the review. I got me a ball of this yarn. I crocheted with an I hook and I did not make all of the chains between the clusters. I was able to complete the square without any issues. But when I did crochet with all of the chains like the directions say to do..I had to redo my rows for the colors because the colors were not lining up right.

Thank you for this clear tutorial and tips on fixing transitions. My first square had a three inch color flaw between the second and third colors. I was able to manage the loss of 3 inches with your help. I hope this flaw isn’t a frequent occurrence because I love the concept ❤

I not several balls of Araan dream and made one
Large afghan in a 12 point pattern of all
Dble crochet sts and its beautiful. Kept
Running g out of yarn now can't find anymore??
Didn't have the patience to fiddle with small
Squares. Choose a large pattern...it works
    Really well.

Thank you so much for your honest assessment of this new yarn and how to make it work. Based on how I work I think this is *not* the yarn for me but I wouldn't have otherwise known that without first trying it myself first, and probably getting pretty frustrated! Thank you again, Mikey!

Nice to see yarn that can make granny squares without soooo many ends to sew in! I will buy a skein to try and then may be buy more colour-ways to put them all together.

I really want to try this yarn out. I hate changing colors and weaving in ends so much that I’m willing to put up with the trial and error this requires. Plus the color combos are lovely!
