And the academy award for best supporting actor goes to Bruce Dern for the Burbs. And his portrayel of retired army veteran Mark Rumsfield. Lol. Seriously though, this movie may not have won any awards but I guarantee it means more to more people than whatever won that year in the so called important films categories. The Burbs is a true B movie 80's classic with a huge cult following. It is hilarious and witty with some Hitchcock esque mystery thrown in. And a perfect cast that didn't take themselves too seriously in 1989 back when you could still make silly and fun movies just to entertain people for a few hours. It is one of those flicks that I always re-watch once or twice a year. And one of the best to throw on late at night on a weekend when you can't think of what to watch but just want something fun and entertaining. Watching the Burbs again and again is like comfort food for me.
I just retired from the military a few years ago and currently live in the burbs. I totally aspire to be a Captain Mark Rumsfield. Bruce Dern is frik’n hilarious in this film, definitely steals every scene. "A soldier's way saves the day!" - Mark Rumsfield
I live in LA and have been to Universal Studios where they feature this street set on their lot tour. I instantly thought back to this movie and how funny it was. It's crazy how it all takes place on one set. There's no second location or anything.
Top ten best movie characters of all time. "Heyyyy! Pinnochioooooo!" The part where he peels off the wallpaper is the funniest thing ever filmed... "Because YOU... are a garbageman!"
Absolutely brilliant character and performance from Bruce Dern - the entire film is genius but Bruce really did get all the best lines - "About a nine on the tension scale there Reub"
Rumsfield must be about 87 years old now, and I'm pretty sure he still lives on Mayfield Place, and that's he's keeping an eye on all his new neighbours.
There was a summer in the early 90s when me and my brother watched this movie at least once a week. A great summer, no bills, no job, just me and my bro watching a great movie on repeat and playing games on the Sega Genesis, hanging with friends, not a care in the world. Innocent. Here I sit watching clips of it now, but now I sit watching the clips with no innocence. I did two tours in Iraq, got divorced from my first wife, remarried, have 5 amazing and beautiful children with my forever wife, have too many bills to keep up with, I drink every night because I want to drink every night. Life is funny, its an amazing journey. Once you become an adult and have responsibilities you can never go back to just being a kid again. However, it is awesome having kids and watching them enjoying life with that innocence that once is gone, can never be gotten back. I vow to protect that for them as long as I can hold back the flood plains of the harsh realties of this world. I am typing this with Morgan Freeman narrating my words in my head for some reason. Im drunk, about to rack out.

Bruce Dern really should’ve been in more comedies he’s hilarious in this. He’s like a Clint Eastwood that doesn’t take himself seriously
I agree! Bruce Dern is awesome anywhere.

That is one of my all time favorite stunts.
