These dramless/cacheless drives are fine for older machines still using SATAII, where they give an improvement over spinning disk at least. You are correct though that at the prices you showed, these are not worth it.
I was happy with the speed of backing up my Atari 410 to a cassette drive. Of course that was in 1977. I learned the meaning of "write speed patience".
I recently replaced a 2.5 500 GB WD blue drive with a 500 G WD blue NAND SSD. Cost was USD $53.99 on Amazon. Made a nice improvement in performance and works great. Why buy an off brand for very little less if any cost?
the answer, as always is, it depends on what you're doing. for a parents or oldies or kids machine, yep, cheap is the go (if it is reasonably cheaper), it's only when you get into productivity or epeen where you "need" "better"
I picked up one of the 240GB Londisk SSD's for $15. I have a bunch of better brand name drives but for $15 it'll do just fine to store games or stuff i don't care much about.
Depends. If I just want a fast cheap boot disk to throw in my junker laptop and i keep backups of important files. Unfortunately the price divided by capacity just isn't good enough on these.
I value my data. But I would trust my data to 2 cheap chinese drives to 1 non-chinese one - redundancy is king. I had an OCZ, Sandisk Ultra2, and KingDian die recently from a power cut. The KingDian came back alive, the sandisk stayed dead. I might have shredded the OCZ too soon and didn't give it the weeks it might have needed to come back alive. I have since bought more chinese drives. The kingdian was using intel flash, the heoriady was using Sandisk flash. I think people are afraid to open the drives for fear of discovering good chips in them. My chinese drives are slow. The reason, I believe, is because the chinese are in some kind of non-compete agreement with the large brands. I can see hint of that coming to an end. The chinese colorful brand is starting to sell DRAMed SSDs, others will follow.
Here in Netherlands SSD's are more expansive than ever. Cheapest models costs now 8,6 eurocent per gigabyte. Before the crysis cheapest was 6,5 per gigabyte.
Great video! I had a problem with a cheap 64gb micro sd card where it melted and nearly wrecked my pi4😡. I think the morale of the story is don’t buy cheap stuff and stick with the proven disks?
These SSDs are not "cheap" enough to be worth considering... They can work just fine depending on your use case, but the prices these Londisks are going for is definitely not justifiable when you can get plenty of more reputable branded ones for cheaper. I own a Reeinno 960GB SSD since March 2019, ordered it from AliExpress for 70€. It is working just fine as a game library drive, I just can't fill it entirely or the speeds definitely plummet.
A cheap SSD can be used to store data that doesn't require a lot of performance like your music collection, doing browser caching, data logging etc. They run cooler than a HDD and also takes up much less space leaving room for ventilation inside the case, but at this price point I don't really see much value as you can pick up a brand SDD for the same price. Also never buy SSD with less capacity than 500GB; they fill up instantly and then you'll be stuck with a drive that's 90% full and the performance may suffer, also there's no room for 'over provisioning'.
1st thought was maybe to use 1 as a scratch disk for video editing since not normally allot of data needed and being used as a scratch disk it will be deleted afterwards. Or even a cheap steam drive for testing. Other than than I wouldnt use it
Like I say to people, Chinese-made is alright if it's made to someone else's specs. Chinese-made to Chinese specs is what you want to avoid. A lot of big manufacturers use Chinese labor and manufacturing so to simply avoid 'anything' made in China is nonsensical. Even overpriced but revered Apple junk is full of Chinese components.
Great video! One question what is the software you were using to monitor the drive? I know main manufacturers have an application for monitoring their drives . if there is a universal software/app I would like to check it out.👍👍👍👍
What would you recomment for use to archive and store data, and access it from time to time ? Speed is not my priority but mainly reliability .I was thinking of getting ssd and get an sata3 to usb adapter and use them as external drives cause external hdd's and ssd's are more expensive than standart ones,go figure :(
So basically they are worthless....you'll spend almost the same amount for much less performance, and then you have to worry about how reliable they're going to be. Skip.
Any one reading comments Please Don't Buy 120GB SSD, It's like waste of money, Better go with minimum 250 GB or more. As more updates and apps will be installed in future, size of SSD will matter. I have a 5yrs old SSD as OS drive & now I'm soon running out of space.
The only thing I would use these for is for data that I do not mind losing. I may use these drives in an external USB case in place of a USB stick but that would be it. A 5 yr warranty means nothing if you have to send the drive back to China for replacement. Remember people Backup Backup REGULARLY. SSDs can fail
They are not that cheap at £67.99 for the 480gb SSD 2.5" when you can buy a WD green 480GB SDD 2.5" is only £45.00 - both priced from amazon.. so not so cheap for what you get... saying that I have a couple of the Drevco drives I got for the my old machines.
