Jeff was adopted Cancer took his eyes at 1. Someone put a guitar in his lap at 2. He taught himself to play. By 15 he was playing in bars. He had a number of hit songs. He toured and played a lot with SRV ;Stevie Ray Vaughn]. He did a Cameo as the "house band" in the divisional "Road Hose" movie. He stopped touring and opened a "Blues" bar in his home town of Toronto On Canada where he would play when the mood struck him. Unfortunately cancer took his life 2 weeks before his 42nd birthday and 1 month before the release of his first studio album in 11 yrs. One of Canada's most forgotten and underrated singer/song writers/ missions. Truly a sad state of affairs.
Jeff Healey was the real deal. He played in the high school band. He lived on the next street over from me and used to walk to church every Sunday. He also used to take the bus and subway to school. He was a very talented musician.
KUDOS from and Thank U, million times THANK U for the respect and NOT start stop start stop. May i recomend The Tragically Hip / Rush / and other great Canadian talents.
Jeff Healey is Canadian and yes he lost his sight to ocular cancer when he was a baby. His father gave him a guitar when he was three and it was easier for him to hold it in his lap. Unfortunately cancer claimed him when he was in his early 40's. He was friends with Stevie Ray Vaughan and he played with him along with a number of other greats in the music business.
Jeff Healey & Stevie Ray Vaughan "Look at Little Sister" - nothing better than 2 guitar virtuosos together on the same stage. Also......the piano player, Dr. John the Night Tripper, is worth checking out "Right Place, Wrong Time".
It's amazing that never having seen how to "properly" hold & play guitar because of his blindness Jeff's Mind & Imagination was able to create his own unique & amazing style of playing . Obviously the biggest advantage of holding the guitar on his lap is he brings his thumb into play , in a very big way too , which allows him to play using 5 fingers instead of the 4 that a normal guitarist does . 🙂 The guy on the piano , Mac Rebennack , better known by his stage name of Dr.John , is a reknowed Nawlin's pianist who you can find sitting in with plenty of other artists on youtube . For his solo work check out his funky "Right Place , Wrong Time" . His voice fits the way he looks in this video perfectly .
Don't ever let Jeff hear you say he is "Blind"... He has vision that most people miss entirely and plays those strings like they are attached to his body at birth. NOBODY else quite like him. Great choice.
I had a brief conversation with Jeff after the first time hearing him perform. Not realizing he was blind he clearly picked up my ignorance and had some fun with me. I knew something was up as his band-mates kept smirking standing behind him.
It's great you pointed out the band backing Jeff Healy. Dr John (piano) is no longer with us but Hakim Omar (drums) and Marcus Miller (bass) are truly in the top of the pack when it comes to just about any genre. All three of them have contributed to the success of many albums - especially Jazz. "What a night" is one of my favorite Dr John tunes... in spite of him being known for New Orleans style tunes... even breaking the top 10 pop songs during the seventies (I was in the right place but it must have been the wrong....)
