i actually want to get into judo just because i've taken slams at like 20+ MPH and *mostly* walked them off, so why not learn another martial art that's even lower impact than concrete & asphalt and will teach me to roll even better?
The only thing that has to be modified is the back-break fall. If you slap the concrete with your hands you can break your hand. I almost did it turning my hand black from the bruising. It's safer to slap the ground with your triceps at the same time, similar to a pro-wrestling "bump" rather than a judo breakfall.
sometimes you can get so focused and sweaty on a trick that just taking a shirt off isnt enough. gotta do a backside flip with those balls swinging for momentum y'know.
I just took a gnarly fall from a rock while riding from the parking lot to the skatepark. The roll he demonstrates saved me from serious injury. I'm back to say thanks, and to encourage others to ROLL.
I felt unstable riding on transition once, so I stepped off and rolled my ankle so hard I broke my leg. Even though I've regularly practiced falling as a skater and a rock climber, I've had a hard time trusting myself to fall safely since my accident.
Same. I fell and broke three lumbar vertebrae. Nothing too serious, had to wait for it to heal naturally, like broken ribs. I'll be able to go back skating in 2 days, but now I'm EXTREMELY scared of falling. I think I dodged a big bullet last time, but I don't want to stop skating, so I'll be extra careful and start for scratch
I really appreciate your channel, specifically how well you explain things by referring to elements that aren't just tangible. Using little 3d models really helps me to understand. Thanks a bunch, definitely subscribing.
Thanks for the tips! My best falls is when the side of my body plops down like a bodyslam, but not my first instinct. I stick out my hand to fall, and I'm heavy. Taking a little break at the moment. My thumb was hurting so bad in the fleshy part under the joint. I couldn't hold a barre chord on a guitar without it feeling pretty gross. My wrist pain left after using a d30 double-sided wrist band for a while. But some injuries aren't obvious until it gets bad. You can skate with a bad wrist or shoulder til you fall on it and cry for five minutes, so do try to let injuries heal correctly, too.
Just got back from the hospital with a cast on my leg from a badly sprained ankle while doing a shuvit. I was already scared of doing them before because i broke a rib on a fakie shuvit. Now I'll probably avoid them altogether. I'll probably stick to ollies / miniramp from now on 😂
i would love to see a in depth observation of grind tricks on ledges vs rail and just overall weight distribution between different tricks. I think it would be very interesting. I'm glad you're still doing content keep it up !
The same thing applies to motorcycling. When a car suddenly blocks your path, you need to either gradually apply brake pressure or swerve to escape the collision. This can be done by practicing said options and staying alert to your surroundings.
so that's why sometimes I don't even pop when trying something scary. This has kept me away from doing any big drops as one time I didn't pop, straightened out my legs and slid like a pencil.
Thanks for the video! I'm a very beginner but everytime I lose my balance, I manage to not fall and land on my two feet or one foot but don't hit the floor , which is scary. I fell only 2x. Learning to fall and not get all beat up is a great skill because its not a matter of if, its a matter of when. I also did some jitsu and judo, body been throw zillions of times. Never got hurt. Tuck your chin, rock your back.
i new to roll but the hand placements seems right but sometimes i don't roll and put my hands out in front of me and this gave the idea to try to have them sideways and start to roll more but id pretty much take all the impact in my arms to catch myself
three things that helps me not get hurt skating 1 go to the gym, train legs. 2. do yoga 3. do gymnastics all that flexibility and flailing really helps keep you safe
that "dont stick out your thumb when landing on forearms" advice wouldve really saved me a while ago. I fell forward on a mini ramp when trying to do a rock to fakie about 4 months ago and snapped my radius bone in half and probably even broke my wrist. I still can't even do a push up because my wrist hurts so bad when i bend my arm its horrible 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
there is a lot of truth in this video but i do feel like you shouldn't get of the board if you ever get uncomfortable because you will never truly be comfortable on the board doing tricks until you have actually landed it a couple times before
so far the accidents that happen to me during a skate sessions have been off the skateboard something so stupid like running straight into a fence i didn't see, slipping while walking down some stairs, etc. i think i got it the wrong way around 😭
the thing about these kind of tutorials is that they always show how to avoid injury when you fall off your board on flat ground medium speed and conviniently both feet off the board. None of these would apply to my recent fall when i fell off the side of the quarter pipe and my sketeboard ended under one of my feet
I count that as a trick these days cause I am so consistent with it. Its even worse in fakie when the front foot comes off with the back foot still on the tail, gets you a free credit card
My problem is not falling as such, but getting off the board safely. When I realise that the grind is getting too tight, I try to jump off the board. but sometimes I get my front foot caught on the griptape, which creates a pretty dangerous situation because the fall suddenly becomes uncontrolled or I can't control that I don't step on the board uncontrollably with my standing leg. Any tips?
I broke the two radial bones of my right hand with a terrible displacement twice, a year apart, after the second fracture I didn’t skate for four years due to doctors’ ban, now I’m on the board and I’m afraid of flips, I can’t put my other leg, although thanks to muscle memory I I remember how to do everything, I just can’t put my other foot on the board.
The only time you actually get hurt is when you least expect it. Boom pebble skrrrrts and before you can even react your hip is bruised and you have a sprained wrist.
How do you fall safely while trying to drop in on a quarter pipe but you don't push down hard enough and just fall instead? Lol hurt my hand pretty bad
I cracked my tailbone on a hubba last time I went out because I did not account for 2 or 3 years of no practice. There was no way to roll out, just remember to clench your cheeks before impact.
This is the first thing taught in judo and I always thought it should be taught in skateboarding too!
i actually want to get into judo just because i've taken slams at like 20+ MPH and *mostly* walked them off, so why not learn another martial art that's even lower impact than concrete & asphalt and will teach me to roll even better?
The art of the fall is as pivotal as the ollie
Same but I learned it in Bjj
The only thing that has to be modified is the back-break fall. If you slap the concrete with your hands you can break your hand. I almost did it turning my hand black from the bruising. It's safer to slap the ground with your triceps at the same time, similar to a pro-wrestling "bump" rather than a judo breakfall.
yea same in judo we learned rolls and how to fall in every direction it was the firt thing you learn
why does there need to be a "do not be naked" sign?
it's a city-owned place, so...
sometimes you can get so focused and sweaty on a trick that just taking a shirt off isnt enough.
gotta do a backside flip with those balls swinging for momentum y'know.
I sometimes go out naked. It's nice of them to inform me of places where I can't do that.
i gotta look like a caveman while doin caveman
@@bassyeyThe worst part is being told off when I'm at a skatepark with no warnings. Like, put a sign up if you don't want me nude! Smh

4:00 that layup hurt me more than any skate trick has

It almost looks like he’s running some sort of dumb drill.
maybe he was trying to alley oop a ghost lol

There are ankle braces

What an awesome video. I'm 34 and I just got my first skateboard today and was looking for exactly this kind of content
I appreciate it!
Remember to use a helmet. Brain damage sucks.
true.
Not only a helmet
@@Str8representingwell armor for your body/limbs is good but you can heal your body more, you can't really heal brain damage
Oddly good timing, I’m watching videos before my skateboard has shipped to me. Thanks
Perfect video I get hurt a lot but I’ve also been very lucky because I follow a lot of these to the T without even noticing

Dude i needed this, I bought my first skate, two weeks later I fall and my ankle is destroyed for the next two weeks.
my first day i rolled my ankle and i can’t even run right now, let alone pushoff 😭
4:55 yeah i did that, which is why im icing my elbow and watching this video
haha, you have something more interesting to watch when you are injured. get well soon.

I've never seen the wrist slide approach, that's definitely viable too. Thanks
I used it once, almost broke my hand, would not reccomend. Rolls are better
@@fekigrejps7859 Good to know, thanks
We jump fences and roofs in Philly so you learn to fall before you learn to skate

6:38 omg you skate at Miyashita Park?! Sickkk
When i get hurt its usually on an easy trick, i just get distracted and face plant. Not usually on new tricks or bigger stairs
its so fun to understand the phsyics and psychological side of skating with your videos. thanks!

Hey bro! Wanted to commend you on this video. I love how you know basic human anatomy and physiology, and referenced them for this video. Great job!
Broke both of my hands, because I fell stupid hate the fact. My right hand is now fucked for ever.
Did you wear protection?

What skate park you is this? I just moved to Japan for school but I haven’t seen anyone skating I thought maybe it’s not a popular sport here
