      Hi Root Ball Randy, Please do.... People think that the tomatoes are useless and won't ripen and can only be used as "Green Tomatoes".... not so if harvested at the last stage of green before it starts to ripen. Remember, from blossom to a ripe tomato, it takes 5 weeks. I say, it takes 7-8 weeks by the time you see the first signs of tomatoes coming on your plants and can harvest all of them at the end of the season at that 7-8 week mark... that's when the weather starts to cool down too much, at least here in the Pacific North West or Vancouver Island, Southern BC, Canada. When you harvest them, grab some produce boxes at Costco that are stackable with vents.... line them with newspaper and place your tomatoes with the stem side down (on their shoulders) on a single layer. Don't over crowd. Place them in a cool, dark area where you have good air-circulation. They will ripen, just check each box every 2 days as they can be quick on some varieties. Don't wash them until just before you eat them. Hope this was of some help... You will be happy you saved your tomatoes for ripening! Harvesting them at their right green stage, which is the last green stage before ripening does not compromise their flavor in any way.... so don't worry. Your tomatoes will still be amazing depending on the variety and what you did in your care for them and weather is a big culprit for flavor.

    The first one is not "Shkatulka", it actually is "malakhitovaya shkatulka", in english it's like "
    Malachite Box"

    • @RascalandCrowFarm
      @RascalandCrowFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello and thank you for your comment.... Yes, it is the full name as you say, but to keep it simple as it is a hard name to pronouce for us foreigners, I just say the last one as a reference only as I don't have much room on the stake to write it all, some of the Russian varieties have long names.... and yes, the meaning "Malachite Box", I have also mentioned too in other videos.

      I gave some Black Krim I had grown to my daughter's Russian figure skating coach last year. His wife, the choreographer told me no, it's Paul Robeson.

    • @RascalandCrowFarm
      @RascalandCrowFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephanienewhouse2056 Although a tomato may look like another, just by looking at it is not the way to identify a tomato. Many people, just because they may have had a tomato that looks much like another, assume it is the variety they have had in the past. Not so. When you buy a heirloom tomato seed, you go by what they are selling as as the lineage as the lineage should be at least 50 yrs old with the same name or else you can't trace that lineage which is what makes it an heirloom. That is why it is important to get seed from a proper heirloom producer.

    Do you know of a variety that has a strong tomato flavor and a strong producer?

    • @RascalandCrowFarm
      @RascalandCrowFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Chris, Wow.... where to start on the strongest and strong producer. So many good ones... I find that the Portuguese varieties are amazing... The Portuguese Ox, the Algarve Ox, Quadrazais, Braga, and Alva.... Also, the Feuerwerk (Firework) from Germany... so so many. The Portuguese ones tend to be either Ox Hearts or Beefsteak varieties... with intense flavor. As you probably know, there are tomatoes with merloish tones, citrus tones, fruity tones, a fresh savory umaminess, even smokey tones... So it depends what you are looking for. However, for what you described... I would go with the Portuguese Ox, Quadrazais (Beefsteak) and Braga (Beefsteak). Remember, each year your tomatoes can change flavor because of the weather which you have no control over, your amendments you put into your soil, your watering habits, your pruning habits, your compost and your soil condition. So many things can affect the flavor and you become your own scientist of your own area and environment you grow them in. May I ask, what area you are from? That will also help me select for you as well... I will be selling seed coming up at the beginning of December on our website at rascalandcrowfarm.com.

      Outstanding production. I have such a hard time producing fruit. My San Marzanos do ok but not great, but I have attempted brandywine and Cherokee with very limited success, wasting a lot of $$. I live in a hot dry zone, zone 9b, am going to start using shade cloth, as Temps can get up to 105+, hopefully that will help. What amendments do you recommend?

  • @artport7
    @artport7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you may have a mislabeled San Marzano or you have some growing secrets that the rest of the world does not... San Marzanos are usually much smaller and elongated looking more like a pepper of some sort ...

    • @RascalandCrowFarm
      @RascalandCrowFarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello artport7, Yes, they are San Marzano in the video.... This was a year they grew hugely... all the years after that they grew much smaller. I believe it was a combination of things... Soil amendments and weather that year.

      It depends on the year, I experiment almost every year with something added or taken away... to see if I improved the tomatoes in flavor, size or yield.... However, sometimes if you have a colder year or not enough sustained warm weather it will affect the yield and flavor. Too much pruning will also affect your tomato yields.... Here's a BIG TIP..... Don't pinch off all your "Sucker"s" . There are no suckers on a tomato plant, they are fruiting branches or side branches. If you pinch most of them off (as many sites wrongfully suggest), you will get fewer fruit. Real sucker's on any given plant don't produce fruit. Hope this helps...
