Vegetable Prices Soar in Beijing and Shanghai; Chinese Can’t Afford Even Greens and Cucumbers

  • One blogger shared an even more shocking experience at his local vegetable market, where prices have become unbelievably high. Cucumbers, which used to cost around 2 yuan per half kilo, are now selling for nearly 8 yuan. In some places, two cucumbers are priced at 10 yuan, and in others, eggplants are going for 15 yuan per half kilo-over five times their usual cost. The most surprising increase is with spinach, which has surged to 19 yuan per half kilo.

The police did not allow the machines to harvest on time and because of that, they rotted. Furthermore, the police gave many fines to farmers because the police used uncalibrated scales to weigh 5 to 10 tons more than the actual weight.
Many people stole many crops a few days before harvest or when they saw a harvester.
The government ordered to destroy many crops because they created a new license to be a farmer and if the farmer didn't have the license they cannot make food.
The government has made a new map of zones that can grow food, and each zone can only be used to grow one type of food. Many vegetables were destroyed because they were the wrong vegetables for the area.

Now in 2024, the banks and the average little pink have no idea what is the ACTUAL value of anything within the country. Any stimulus from the Central state. will be meaningless and ineffectual because the Central Bank is a part of the Party. Thereby merging both fiscal Central and monetary private policies into one ongoing disaster. Local province officials were doing stimulus spending for decades in tandem of the "Economic Miracle" which will undermine any Central stimulus during an actual depression/recession or more accurately.. You got to remember that woman in the beginning, she gets 3,000 yen a month that's only $420 us, so for 10 yuen at $1.40 American a pound for vegetables (my math could be wrong I usually am lol) is very taxing on just a $420 monthly income because you have to eat at least twice a day and if you got kids, spouse or elderly parents to take care of also. By the way I just bought groceries and they are still cheap 1usd for 500g of chicken and 50cents for 1kg of potatoes, nobody will die if don't eat spinach for a month

I actually say this is more corruption along with forced price floors. Why? Because farmers themselves aren't making any money, so who is getting all the higher prices? State sponsored distributors who can buy cheap (to the point farmers barely make money), and can legally sell at high price floors, while taking the money in between.

  • @teflerchina.2987

Prices always go up between June and September and then fall to original prices.
The weather plays a big part in prices.
The areas mentioned in this video are regions that have been affected by drought and flooding.
Shanghai and Beijing are expensive cities.. If you can afford to live in those cities then you can afford to pay the prices.
I work in the South and prices are not as high as in the North. I can afford to pay for the veg mentioned in this video and have not noticed price rises. And I only live on a U.K pension.
Then look at the prices in the U.S or U.K and how many people are struggling to buy food for their families and having to rely on food kitchens.
Edit. I just went to a supermarket today and I could buy a pack of three eggplants 600 grams for 5 RMB. a pack of cucumbers 750 grams for 8 RMB. Potatoes. 500 gram for 3.6 RMB.

Well you have to understand how the policy choices of the CCP impact the price of vegetables and pork.
First was the CCPs willingness to engage in and escalate trade wars which have reduced availability for imports of vegetables as Beijing retaliates against foreign countries whove had enough of China's protectionist policies.
Then there is Chinas drive for food security which has led to more land being planted with soy, corn and rice. This has led naturally less land being planted in vegetables which further reduced supplies.
Now you get to this year where by there is a drought in the north and excessive flooding in the south which further reduced supplies.
As a consequence its a sellers market and buyers a forced to pay more because if they dont somebody else will.
Furthermore China has has another flare up of African swine fever which has forced culling of the pig herds.
Again this is compounded by the CCPs trade wars as fewer nations are exporting pork to China.
Lastly inflation outside China has been running hoter and this has driven prices for what imports are going to China even higher.
The whether is only the straw on the camals back, the bulk of the burder was placed on it by CCP policy.

I WISH the US had these "high" prices. The economy would be soaring like a rocket. Oh wait, we don't have enough workers in the country for the economy to soar, which is why inflation rates were raised to put the brakes on job growth. The workers were able to keep demanding higher wages and that had to be stopped.
Vegetable prices are 2 - 3X the cost as these HIGH prices in China. 7 Yuan is roughly 1 USD. Green beans will cost between 1.50 - 2 USD/lb, which is slightly less than 1/2 Kg. The woman at the beginning said green beans are 4 - 5 Yuan 1/2 Kg, so roughly 2/3 of 1 USD for a little more than 1/2 lb. Yeah I'll take that price ANY DAY.

I found out later when I went overseas after graduating in the usa and becoming a foreign student that MOST of those who are foreign students studying in the usa come from wealthy families back in their home countries. what does that mean? that means most of those who travel are from more well to do families. china has 1.4B people. you are going to have at least 1% of these people who are rich. the same applies to all countries. some people are rich and the majority is poor. those that you say are vacationing in brunei looking for homes are probably from wealthy families. travel a little around the world and you will come to know this.

Any container with drainage holes will work. Many vegetables are easy to grow in containers, such as lettuce, greens and in a larger container tomatoes, cucumbers and green beans. This is far better than going broke shopping for food. Also the food you grow is free of chemicals. It's a win-win!
