  • The bike that brought Yamaha to the forefront of super bike design was launched in 1987 and it was called FZR1000. The 1987 version of the Yamaha FZR1000 had a top speed of over 250km/h and the 1989 version, crowned “The bike of the Decade”, could accelerate from 0-60 in less than 3 seconds and it also had a top speed of over 270km/h. With these features any bike would be very appreciated, so production continued. The unique feature which gave the 1989 onward models their “EXUP” name was a servo motor driven exhaust valve. This allowed large bore exhaust reader pipes (for excellent gas flow at high engine speeds) coupled with the valve restricting flow at lower revs, to speed the gas through.

I just found a 1987 FZR1000 Genesis that is 100% original and complete. Will be restoring and adding videos as the project continues. Thanks for the video - was very inspiring.

@@stevenmasterson879 Right now, a non-functioning original. I thought it was just the contacts/relay but the whole motor is seized and rusted shut. I bought a cheap Amazon one but the inlet/outlet lines are the wrong size. It got me running but I still have to source a proper fuel pump.

Yamaha. The maker of weird bikes.
Well, they paused for a moment and made a not weird bike, and it's an amazing, beautiful bike.

I had a ‘92 version (the white, black, red version in the clip) and it had a 130 front tyre from factory. Bike was like on train rails in high speed corners, not so much in short sharp ones… rather terrible actually. Swapped it for a 120/70 tyre… much better handling! Couple other things I remember: the clutch was on/off, fueling wasn’t great at low revs and it did use a bit of oil. Thing was a rocket 8K rpm and above… and I liked the fuel reserve switch on the side fairing. I had a lot of fun with it☺️

I had a 90 model. Bought it in 93 and had it for almost 15 years as my only form of transport too.Did well over 200,000 km. Absolute monster.Miss it like hell. Wish I kept it as decor in my house. The only thing I dislike is the ai generated voice. Bought an XX a month ago.(midlife crisis), too old for a blade which was my last bike. Would sell all other bikes and my soul for another ride on the exup.

The 1st gen 87/88 FZR was heavier than the 86/88 GSX-R1100 by 7 kg, The later 89 on 'EXUP' was lighter than the 89 on GSX-R1100, which got heavier and heavier with each model.

@@johnrhodes101875 I was talking about the 86 GSX-R 1100 and the 87 FZR1000, I own one of each. The fist gen GSX-R is lighter, that’s just a fact, after 89 the GSX-R got heavier and heavier, but the very first model was lighter.
