Angel Hernandez has been an MLB umpire for 31 years, yet despite all this experience, he is the worst umpire in MLB history. Angel has blown several calls, is overly confrontational and even tried suing MLB for discrimination. In a 2018 players' poll conducted by ESPN, he was voted as the worst umpire in the league, with 22% of players identifying him. In 2023, Angel finished the regular season as the lowest rated umpire with 161 bad calls in 10 games, including the lowest rated game. Last night, he set a new record with the largest miss on a strikeout with a strikeout pitch that missed outside by 6.78 inches.

MLB doesn't want him gone and or they screwed up the ump union contract. A union can only protect one individual for so long. If they want you gone they will find a way to do so.
You have to follow the rules set forth between the union and employee. If firing for poor performance isn't a fireable offense then there is nothing mlb can do about it. Etc
Unless you can in this simple example so poor performance leads to like gross negligence or something.

I'm talking about the NHL's Wes McCauley and his highly entertaining Mortal Kombat-inspired signal gestures when he hands out "five for ... FIGHTING!"

If it's intentional, it must be a long plan, because the first time I heard of Angel Hernandez was during a Giants-Dodgers game on July 12, 1997. The Giants had a runner on third base, Mark Lewis, who tagged up on a fly ball, trying to tie the game. He made it home safely, but the Dodgers appealed, saying Lewis had left the base early. Angel Hernandez, working home plate that night, called Lewis out on the appeal, even though replay showed that Lewis not only had not left the base early, he had left the base later than expected on a tag-up play.
Giants announcer Mike Krukow was livid, and called out Angel Hernandez by name. And that was the first time I had ever heard his name.
Later on, Lewis helped the Giants stage a comeback to win the game, and I believe the Giants announcers harkened back to the blown call by Angel Hernandez, as sort of poetic justice that Lewis helped with the rally. So Angel Hernandez's name stuck with me.
I had no idea that decades later, Angel Hernandez would have the reputation that he has now.
So if this was intentional, this has been going on since the 90s.

This was a great video, but you could've also talked about the other option to fix bad calls at the plate, the challenge system. This system is already being tested in the minors to great approval. In this, if a pitcher or batter disagrees with the call they can tap their head to signal a challenge. Like in tennis the umpire will look over to an official off the field who will, in the span of 5 seconds or less, signal whether it was a ball or strike using said high speed cameras. I believe this system is the best option for the future of the game. It allows the umps to keep calling, but not have as much impact if a call is terrible.

Regardless of the Angel Hernandez saga....etc, there is one thing about MLB that confounds me to no end. It is something so simple and obvious yet remains to this day a mainstay in MLB games broadcasting. And that is the graphic they show of the strike zone and the "SUPPOSED" ball location in relation to it after the pitch. Like we see over and over in this video.
This might sound like I'm vindicating the subject of this video which I am NOT. The AH problem is real and I am fully in agreement of it.
    BUT,
in regards to ALL home plate umpires, that graphic is a MAJOR problem for many fans' ability to accurately judge the accuracy of ball/strike calls. The problem is that the graphic is constantly showing the location of where the ball hits the catcher's glove, which basically has little to do with whether or not the ball crossed the plate at the location of the plate. Balls can easily break well more than 6 inches after it crosses that plane. So showing people the location the ball was CAUGHT is completely irrelevant to the ball catching the strike zone! Especially when you consider which side the pitcher is throwing in relation to where the pitch is breaking when it comes towards the plate and vice versa.
There are many things to consider in relation to if the ball catches the zone or not. NOT just those silly TWO DIMENSIONAL rectangle and circle graphics we all see on TV.
They have the ability now to show a THREE dimensional graphic simulation view of the ball's trajectory after a pitch, and that is what an umpire sees, or should be seeing when making a call. Not where the catcher caught the damn ball.
    Anyways. That's just my rant.

Just like bad union teachers can't be fired for incompetence, you can't fire bad umpires. Lots of talk about Hernandez but it's a league-wide problem day in and day out - approx 1 in 5 calls are incorrect. A study in 2018 found that umpires made 34,294 incorrect calls over the course of the season. It's doubly ironic when you consider that we know this because of reference to the digital electronic strike zone which could already be in use instead of incompetent umpires with their "personal" strike zones and inability to correctly identify close pitches - and frequently even pitches that are well within or outside the strike zone.

The problem with the current automated strike zones like you showed is that they aren't accurate to the RULES!
The strike zone isn't a flat 2D plane. It's also not "static" and shifts based on the batters height and stance.
Per MLB; "The official strike zone is the area over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap. In order to get a strike call, part of the ball must cross over part of home plate while in the aforementioned area."
These rules are clearly NOT being followed by the automated systems shown.

I find it hilarious that Hernandez filed a suit of any kind against the MLB for not making him a crew chief. When they should be giving him his walking papers.
The simple fact that he thinks he deserves anything above the minimum salary an MLB umpire should make, let alone to be a crew chief, is laughable.

The fact that ALL umpires have the balls get uppity and confrontational with 2 groups of adults in possession of bats and within swinging range is astonishing to me.

Vegas should allow us to bet over/under on how many bad calls Angel makes in a game.

There is. Actually, there is a side bet for blown calls for every game, most people don’t play it. There is also a side bet on ejections.

I'd like to put something out there. To be clear, this is not in defense of Angel Hernandez... because it could be seen as such.
I think we've lost focus on what defines a good strike zone. A good strike zone should be one that is rock solid on any given night and fair to both pitchers and hitters. It should not have to conform exactly to the box drawn on everyone's TV. The variation from umpire to umpire, night to night, was used by pitchers to get an upper hand. It was then up to the hitters to figure out the exact strike zone. It was part of the game, and as long as the zone didn't wander all was good. Having some level of unknown is good and can increase the tension.
It does suck for an umpire to miss one (or a dozen), but the game is becoming sterile. Over the long season that is baseball the mistakes tend to even out. The expectation that the zone is a perfect box is in my oipinion flawed and bad for the game, and to make matters worse hitters run back to check video if they don't like a call. It is simply impossible for a human to succeed in the long run even though they are plenty adequate for the job, unless we move past this need for absoluite perfection. I have lost complete interest in watching MLB and doubt it will ever draw me back in.

The fact that I know this guy’s name says a lot. I don’t really follow baseball, so I shouldn’t know the name of a single umpire. I don’t know a single NBA or NHL ref, but this guy I know. That’s not good.

The MLB must understand that their consumers are the fans and spectators, both live and on TV. The MLB must not get complacent in that no matter what gets put out they will come. If 'fans', those who actively follow a team, start to lose just a little interest because of the gross underperformance of the officiating, or the confusion with complicated rules, it will also affect the casual spectator. Fans are the advertising. You get a pumped fan in the office talking up a team - this flows to the casual spectator coworker. The coworker starts watching games. But it works in reverse. Something needs to be done about the union. It is one thing to have collective bargaining to protect jobs, pay, seniority etc. but to no be able to fire someone for underperformance should not be there. And, I would argue, the umpires should want that. Because, if they don't, they will all be out of a job either by being replaced by cameras or by the league just dying away. Me personally, I would like to keep the umpires there (real people) because the human element is a part of the game. But if they cannot 'field a good team' and fire those who do not perform then get rid of them and rely on tech (which of course will have it's on issues (the software gets hacked and the strike zone is 2" bigger for one team - i can see it now). On second thought, maybe I just give up on baseball - I'm a Mariners fan - doesn't look like we will ever win a WS. Sure there is still a few hours entertainment - taking my brain away from real life for a bit - but I don't know...

baseball isn't the only sport with officiating issues, hockey has it bad, reffs calling penalties that barely qualify while looking at a blatant and serious 1 and calling nothing, or calling a penalty on 1 team but when the other does the exact same thing no call is made. these things need to change

No, he's not a bad ump. The circle ⭕ shown on TV is showing where the catcher catches the ball, NOT where it crosses the plate. The plate is 17 inches deep, and the catcher sits 3-4 feet behind it. A breaking pitch breaks more in the last 10 feet than it does in the first 50 feet. How can you not see this? The circle shows up right on the catcher's mitt

The one thing you cannot accuse Hernandez of doing, is _FAVORITISM._ Angel has blown game-losing calls against every team in every game he's worked.
For him to sue MLB for _DICRIMINATION,_ merely because he's so terrible an umpire they won't let him work post season games is unbelievable.

  • @TheSandwichOfficial

I think instead of automatic umpires we should allow teams to challenge a certain number of balls/strikes so we don’t completely ruin the defensive aspect of catchers but the call can be overturned if it’s completely outrageous. The MLB also needs to stop being scared to fire umpires for lackluster performance. They already won a lawsuit against Hernandez on the (simplified) basis of “he sucks at his job.”

You would think the union would want Hernandez gone just as much as mlb. Why allow subpar umpires when the entire industry is at risk of automation. You protect this man at the cost of everyone.
