Age Discrimination in Hiring & How to Overcome it // Tell me, what ways will you use to improve your job search strategy?

The real trick is to show the following:
      1. You're not just looking for a quiet pasture to bed down and spend your remaining time before retiring.
      2. You're not just resting on your previous skills, you are continuously learning new ones.
      3. Even health problems, if you have any (I'm 1 year 5 months cancer free, still recovering from several surgeries and whatnot), are not any obstacle to being amazingly effective at the job.
      4. You can relate to people of any age or culture.
      5. You won't be harassing, boring, depressing, negative, political, or offensive at work.
      etc.

in Thailand the employers like to hire the young age people (not over 35yrs). I am now 43yrs and also have gaps in employment 1.5yrs. super tough for me :(

@@setnaffa Pushing out old employees to recruit younger ones is an indicator a business is poorly governed. Well governed businesses adapt their interviewing styles to older employees because they know how to manage them. An advantage to working with top recruiters is that they only work with well governed businesses.

The fact is, if you dye your hair, wear trendy clothing, have an active social profile, eat sushi, listen to current artists, show disdain for life insurance, and speak in a droning and gravelly monotone where every sentence ends in a question, you will be acceptable.

I have watched many of your videos and never commented. I am over 50, run 6 miles a day, and have worked in my field for 25 plus years. Do I feel funny being interviewed by hiring managers 20 years younger and with less experience than me who act like I am fresh out of college? It seems in your video you are stating that I should settle for “ consulting “ . Consulting offers no health benefits or the feeling of having steady employment. Since you look to be in your 30’s, 40’s tops, your probably have not encountered ageism, yet. Well let me tell you, it is real and it stinks!!

    • @allyroman652

I have the same feeling. The video started well but with the last half she is teaching us to accept and to 'surrender' to the fatality of ageism. 😠 I think the problem resides in the companies policies and cultures, encouraging very young people rush and climb the ladder without experience or skills that take many years to build. A sad reality, but I will continue hoping and will succeed or die trying 💪😄

The problem lies in society stereotypes of aging. Watch your television and the media has children and young adults saving the world. Retirement age is 68 for most people. Social old age is approximately 30-45 tops. We need governmental answers to address these issues as well as agencies to educate our communities. This is a minority everyone will reach. We are wasting manpower.

I have been scouring TH-cam for interview training. I am 59, newly divorced and need to get back into the work force.
I had a job but got laid off
I WANT a new career. I still have some time before I hit retirement age.

Age discrimination is a real problem in some professions. I work in software development, where we have senior developers in their mid-20s, have unspoken rules about ever hiring anyone over 30 and looking for ways to push people out when they get a family or turn 35. If a 30+ year-old perfectly fits a position we need filled, they will still look for someone in China or India. It's probably illegal, but impossible to prove, and when I spoke against it to management, I was pulled off some interviews I was supposed to conduct.

You are right. I used to be a computer programmer, but they keep hiring young people from Asia. They keep codes when they need them for a particular project. That's it! They are not going to think and waste time for coding. a bunch of Indians are working for CISCO. The company is very Indian. Qualification based on Indian diaspora, but there is another problem among them. Some Indians belong to a lower class and some higher class. Then lower class sues upper class for discrimination. Welcome to America :-)

@@jaythrash8804 "Entry level" barely seems to exist in our industry at this point. No matter what position, any company involved in software development feels entitled to someone with several years experience. Even jobs listed as "junior-level" still require at least three years experience, and if they can't find anyone with that much willing to work for a junior's salary, they'll find someone in China or India with a perfectly crafted fraudulent resume from Infosys, Cognizant, or Tata..

I agree with this. It doesn’t matter if you are up-to-date with your skillset, your mind is sharp, and you have the energy of a 25 year old, hiring managers are going to pick the younger, hungrier and CHEAPER engineer. M

Linda, the reality is that there are plenty of millenials hired who have ZERO ambition, Zero experience, plenty of schooling in unrelated fields but none in on-point topics, yet get hired because they fill a social quota, lower the group insurance age demographic, and look good in a company's website photos.
Seriously, would you say these same things to someone complaining about racism/sexism/genderism/etc?

  • @ivygailmcc
    @ivygailmcc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

So if I'm over 40 and I'm making a career change, hiring managers are going to automatically decided that I don't have the energy to do the job. You've decided that because I'm over a certain age I don't want to grow. It's crap to tell someone to stay put since their closer to retirement age. What if you hate your current job because you are working with toxic people and its just time to leave. What if you're moving to a new city? What if you get laid off? This just sounds like go into business for yourself or jump off a cliff because you are too old and obsolete. I know you are giving it to us straight but this is dismal.

Here is another thing that I'm finding hard to process. Millennials don't stay in one work place for decades so why are hiring managers looking for that. I get that they are looking to pay someone less money but most young people move around often. So why not give someone older and more experienced an opportunity to be amazing for however long they decide to stay. Pay for quality! I appreciate the few tips that were kind of helpful but everyone is not and can't always be entrepreneurial as a means to the basic necessity of employment.

    • @tracirasch9345

ivygailmcc totally agree. Not only are they less expensive but can be molded into what the company wants or needs and less likely to ...how do I say this...question some company’s methods. After 20+ yrs with a company I’ve seen & experienced many situations. I’m adaptable, but I don’t think people see it that way. Older=stuck in my ways to some people. It’s ridiculous.

Hi, Linda! I know you mean well, and are trying to help us "old people" who are trying to make a change in our career path with your "real talk." But ultimately you were said that "we" should adjust our expectations because the ship has sailed, and that we should be happy with what we go, and/or take whatever we can get, because we're about to retire anyways (around 8 minutes into your video). Ageism is alive and well. It is practiced openly and unapologetically --and it sucks. You don't see it now, because you are so young. But you will soon enough, we all get older. Maybe then you will look back and realize how tone deaf this video was. Thanks for trying,...

I have yet to see a coach or recruiter really just admit the reality - if you are older, a full time job may very well be a thing of the past. Laid off at 64 from a software company, I know someone out there may want to hire me. However, I can't financially afford to look for a year for a job. So most likely will have to take Social Security early. Can all of us Baby Boomers become consultants? Contractors? Doubt that very much.

I know this is a 6 year old video, but it is still valuable information. With that said, I just turned 64 and have been a Warehouse/Facility manager for over 20 years (not to mention being in manufacturing, production and inventory control) and was recently down-sized due to a business losing customers to the competition in their market. We went from 200 plus employees to under 100 in less than 5 months. As I started back interviewing, I have great success in the "phone" interview portion, so much so, they can't wait to get me on-site for a sit down interview. As soon as they see me, I can tell by the interview questions that this is going no where fast. I had my resume reviewed and tweaked by a professional service. When I get called for an interview, I have heard this several times; "your resume is so impressive, you are our first candidate." With that said, my resume has no embellishing added, it's just me. I have been to over 25 of these type of interviews and no, it is not me or my experience, it is ageism.

It's a hard issue to address. First of all, if the company is really pushing to find a young candidate, they will aim at that no matter what. The only thing you can do to try and improve your chances is to show how much more value you can bring to the company by being older and more experienced (e.g. "I know that you are probably thinking about hiring a younger candidate, but a professional with my degree and variety of experienced can be an incredible asset for your company considering I have worked in the A and B industries/experienced two market crashes/aced the KPIs in my previous position while going through a rough divorce/I am showing the same level of drive and determination as younger peers as well as bringing more versatility). There are many positives to ageism. Older workers have advantages that younger workers do not: experience, maturity, loyalty, wisdom, industry knowledge, professionalism, poise and how to be an effective team member. They also have solid verbal/written communication skills because those invaluable attributes were ingrained in us from the time we were children.

Hi Linda, you make some excellent points here. I have been in some interviews where they seem to be almost overwhelmed by my experience, and I think that I had aced the interview. Then I find out they are not interested, but give no real reason, or not one that makes sense. I can only attribute it to age, and their stereotypes or biases about people that are older than they are.

  • @hrrambling8994
    @hrrambling8994 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

She is actually exemplifying ageism. She said you have to admit that your career has peaked. You don't want to advance, just continue making a contribution. This is a stereotype and demonstrates bad thinking on the part of hiring managers. The thought that this person may soon want to retire or has low energy and therefore should not be hired is age discrimination. Nevertheless, those thoughts exist, and she should have addressed how a mature job seeker can counteract them. Andrew LaCivita has a good video on just this.

So I am spending this entire year preparing for and ramping up my own business. I’d rather sit at home than work for a big corporation like that again - even just talking about the interview process makes me want to gag. I have no misconceptions - ageism is huge right now - companies want the 20 somethings that understand the younger generation - how skilled you are at your job doesn’t even really matter - they’d rather train someone than hire someone that is old. It’s just a fact of life and it’s not going to change. My entire point is.... be creative and come up with a business idea that leverages you’re skills (and even better, your passion). Bypass all of this and start your own business.

Very good advice. However, coming from someone who has done freelance and contract work, it in no way provides the consistency or benefits of a traditional job. Can you meet federal requirements for health insurance? It's not inexpensive. Ask yourself if you'll be making enough money to hire a personal accountant to handle billing, taxes and other financials. Contracts for freelancers or consultants sometimes state that the amount of work available and the actual pay can vary. When cuts must be made, the easiest place to cut is the contractors. They probably won't get rid of you entirely if you're doing a fantastic job. But make no mistake, freelancing is a tough road. Depending on your situation, you will likely be working far more than 40 hours a week. And ultimately, it's still giving older people the shorter end of the stick. It was very disheartening to me when I updated my skills by taking graphic design courses at a local college. One of the things they said to a class of people age 18 and up, is to avoid freelancing if at all possible. One of my instructors taught an entire class on this, backed by stats and research. He and other professors had experience as high fashion retouchers, ect., and they have worked for major companies as contractors. Yet they all had another job outside of their freelance business. For them, it was teaching. At the college level, it pays very well part-time. That is also another possibility and an industry where "age" or experience tends to have value and not act as a hindrance. Great video, but I say all of that to say this. Be prepared to work very hard and long as a contractor, probably harder than you did at a traditional job.

I've been working as a contractor in IT for years and so far have never put in over 40 hours a week because the client did not budget for that. And I would equate the work effort close to a regular FTE, without the extra admin work of attending certain meetings or involvement in the review process.

Thank you for bringing this up, Linda. I want to say, ageism is not only for the people over 40s or 50s, I experienced ageism when I found my second job in Japan. I have 6 years' working experience back then, but I changed my career to a totally new field after I got my master's degree. The question I encountered the most in the interviews is "Do you mind working with the people younger than you?" I almost needed to comfort every company about their concerns of my age(especially for a single woman). And of coz, I was rejected by the companies that I could not figure out the reasons why coz the interviews went pretty well. But I think what you said in your video is right, I did not consider age is my only reason for the rejections and then I continue to improve my interview skills that I finally landed my job. I wish I could discovered your channel earlier that maybe I could have shorten the period of time for my job hutting!!

When they see you are 40+, they trip you up. Interviewer wanted to know what I kind of work I had before the current position since I had mentioned only one employer in my resume (I am not writing the former employers in my resume because they have nothing to do with accounting). After I got a rejection letter, I contacted one of the interviewers and asked for the feedback - how should I prepare/improve myself for the interview. Her answer is: Always write previous employers, you spoke about so much about them 😊 I think before the interview they thought I was young enough.

The correct term is called age bios at 40 or 50 its much easier to start a consultancy in a field that the person comes from or pivot into a business that they have the skills in this is why the skills audit is important. I myself am 55 this year and I am a modular worker that's self-employed. I do 3 different businesses in a week Electrical Engineer, Business Advisor, and lastly, finance broker.

I I have coached hundreds of people over 40 and 50. It actually exists, not only mindset. No way their resume will EVER get through any filters. Forget it! Two solutions: NETWORK with the right people who will look at YOU and your ability to help them accomplish what they want. Second: You’ve got to get more techy and more relevant and llet that show. The truth is hiring managers mistrust older people, they are uncomfortable with older people. That’s why you have to get around hiring managers and get to higher level decision makers. If not, then starting a biz is the other path but it takes a certain kind of person to do this.

Hi Linda. I am an older worker and wish to relocate back to West Virginia from Michigan. I have run into many obstacles in trying to get a job. I had my own business for 25 years in graphic art, website design, and Search Engine Marketing but also spent some time as a journalist. I got a master's degree in journalism from Marshall University. My school's career services recently came out and said that I may be discriminated against by age, and the relocation issue is being used to get around the age problem. I need to figure out what to do.

There is age appropriate jobs for example you don't see a 40 year old working at Mcdonald unless is a manager, just like you don't see a 21 year old college professor, it is your skills and resume that is important and valuable your age doesn't matter at all, however if it a professional job than yes it is required to have a degree, skills, resume, and experience.

How about a video if you are 50+ and want to re-locate to another state to obtain a job? If managers see your resume' you have too much job experience they are already getting an opinion on your age. If you tell them you want to move closer to family, they are assuming you are trying to get your expenses paid to move there. I just want a chance to just to let them know in an interview, try me, you might like me better than your local choices and are worth the risk to take hiring out of state.

Lala, I was finally able to un-typecast myself out of a field that was no longer good for me. It took YEARS! It also meant accepting offers that were lower than I expected, and with organizations I'd have preferred not to, but this is all part of a slow, laborious small-steps project.
I recently interviewed with a company I'd LOVE working in, and although I didn't get the job this time, the folks I interviewed with gave me enough feedback to point me to where I need to improve to get to such a place.
Take small steps, but take them ferociously.

Nearly 1 in 4 workers age 45 and older have been subjected to negative comments about their age from supervisors or coworkers.
About 3 in 5 older workers have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace.
76 percent of these older workers see age discrimination as a hurdle to finding a new job; another report found that more than half of these older workers are prematurely pushed out of longtime jobs and 90 percent of them never earn as much again. Also 99% of co-workers liked me,Im above average in looks, personality, but its all about getting the old high paid workers out.

I don't want to take the name of the company that has almost hired me. It was a telephonic interview. All my details were given by sending the text messages. The company HR finally called me with the documents. I was traveling with the documents and in a way, I received a call from the same HR. The simple question asked me " What is your date of birth? I answered him that I have given you my date of birth by sending you the text message long back. Please help me with your date of birth again. I gave him my date of birth. His immediate answer, Mohan, you are not qualified. I am sorry. I live in Mumbai, India. The country does not have "Age discrimination employment act" I am jobless for more than 3 years. I do get job calls now and then but they are not in the line of my work experience. It is easy to make video and that you have good communication skill. The truth remains Truth. Age discrimination is worldwide I believe.

Welcome back Linda. Hope you enjoyed your TH-cam sabbatical :0). I couldn't agree more with your assessment. This is largely a common mindset issue. Many times adjusting the mindset can be difficult. Us "old" folks are sometimes slow to change. My personal experience: all the best jobs were ones that I was referred to or known to the hiring manager --my reputation was validated prior to the hiring process being initiated. Resume becomes less critical to a hiring process with an active network.

I'm sorry but this is a great example of the attitude and how ageism looks in a hiring setting. I appreciate the honesty but you lose focus on the topic and lecture the old folks about them needing to lower their expectations after gaining 20+ years of experience. Basically, just create your own business at this point. Which is actually very good advice. But there are plenty of job seekers out there that are being excluded from the workforce intentionally. The attitude generally is, "Who do you think you are?" One thing not really mentioned in detail is to brush up on your skills. This can benefit everyone really. I am going to school for a certification. Learning all of the new technology and ideas. And guess what? I am still not getting any calls despite having an amazing resume. I am wondering how the future will look for all of these companies who only care about hiring young, cheap labor. Ignoring experience and wisdom. 🤔

It is clear that we live in a very unfair world. If you`re a man you cannot get a job because more women are being employed, but at a lower wage than men. If you are a women, you might even be harrassed in the workplace. It is the businesses and governments that are to blame. Everyone should be given Basic Income and a job. Until countries do this there will be no progress in order to create a fair and open society. Then people will be more creative in their field and/or be also able to start a business which creates more wealth. The solution is staring us in the face as the world becomes hotter and hotter and nameless countries stopping a better world because of their poisonous greed.
