  • It's opening day of duck hunting season and Matt is out with his 28 gauge for a solo hunt. Ducks are around but are interested in landing elsewhere early on. Nevertheless, Matt sticks it out and is able to get his duck limit in some of the most beautiful country around. While waiting on the ducks, the rest of the wildlife put on a show!

    I love your videos, your my favorite hunter on TH-cam by far. I see the most respect for the animal and love of the sport out of you. The only thing I would say is maybe mention to your inexperienced viewers that a 28 gauge would not be an ethical approach unless you are an experienced shot.

    What a beautiful day. Your video ability continues to be excellent. Matt, I did not hear any other shooting and it was the opener. You must have permission to hunt on private land which is a blessing. Those swans were majestic. We open on Saturday in Oregon!

    Matt, just want to thank you for all the instruction and excellent content you provide. Looking forward to seeing more of this season. I started seriously hunting ducks and geese solo this year on some of the walk/boat in land in MI (previously mostly field hunted or layouts for sea ducks on big water) based on what I've seen you do, and took my first duck, a drake mallard that decoyed beautifully this morning. Keep up the great work, and hope its a great season.

    • @HighPrairieSportsmen

      Avian X but it isn't loud. I had the Animator attached to it. The noise and ripples are supposed to draw birds in.

    Love your videos and hunts. One thing that always puzzles me is when a hunter says, "nice red legs on that mallard". I know this is a label from the old timers, but those legs couldn't be more orange, they are always orange. Why do you say red legs?

    • @HighPrairieSportsmen

      Thanks! They're not actually red like Nebraska's football team but they are red-orange. You can see a difference in leg color in mallards when held up side-by-side. Some will be more of an actual orange color and others will be red-orange. The latter are where the name "red legs" derives. "Red legs" are the result of hormone changes getting the bird ready for breeding.

  • @jimipei

    That red dot is used primarily to see on the recording of a shot .. or is there such a thing as a red dot u can see as you are aiming at a live bird shot, red dot instead of gun bead so to speak ?

    • @HighPrairieSportsmen

      The red dot is from the camera. It's only on the recording

    • @jimipei

      Thanks for the reply ..hunted waterfowl for 5 decades and did reasonably well but when I was younger I had to learn to lead and focus a lot on the bead. Today I often wonder why they don't have a red dot device that can be used as the bead much like you have camera on the smart phones. Throw the dot image right to the bird before pulling the trigger.@@HighPrairieSportsmen

    Your motorized decoy was making too much noise. I have experienced in the past the more noise it makes the more the ducks flare and are shy when decoying.
