I probably won't even remember half of all the patterns and their names, but now I at least can get a grasp of the basics. About the variations I have to say though, if you are only listing the names and not what those mean, they are more confusing than helpful.
James Merryman I was told that koi fish started getting their humps after farms cross bred them with European carps, which are much bulkier. Funny thing is that outside of japan many koi fish have little to no humps.

So I changed my fish feed to a generic pellet feed from a random assortment of whatever my mum was feeding the fish so basically i standardised the feed for about 3 weeks now and certain koi in my pond started to get mettalic scales as opposed to the former slightly lacklustre matte scales.
I base my fish off personality not looks. Its better to have an ugly fish that loves you than a beautiful fish that you never see since it hides. If youre a collector i csn see why you do it off of looks but if you have fish just for the experience, go with the ones with best personality not looks. I hsve a 10 year old sanke koi that i treat like a dog. He'll come to the top of the water when hes hungry and i hand feed him and i'll pet him. Hes not a top quality in looks, but hes top quality in personality
I had the ugliest fish named Grommet. He was with me for 12 years. I never knew what he was. Just fed him..played..and loved him. I'm from Japan and understand the legend of Koi but I'll take my Grommet over these carp anyday!
Sanjay Kiran If you live in the uk, my all time favourite place is called maiden head aquatics... They often have cheaply priced large and miniature kois! 😁 Although if you are not somewhere in Britain they disagree with shipping live fish on planes...

Such pompous as**holes, they are fish that have been bred to look like what ever the person breeding wants them to look like. Not one of them is better than the other, they are all pretty and that is enough!!!
