  • Oh the joys of boating! But if you are living on a boat and on a budget, you are going to have to deal with pumping out the head and the black water holding tank. If the pump works at your nearest public dock and you have a hose, then it shouldn't be too hard. I am using my 30 foot Catalina sail boat do demonstrate this but it is exactly the same method for any boat with a holding tank.
    If you are lazy and have a couple extra bucks on you (or your boat is such a mess that it doesn't even run) you can call someone like Captain Pumpout to come pump out your tank on a regular basis and not have to worry about it. Highly recommend! Spend more time boating and less time pumping!

    This is my first visit with you. I've watched MANY other youtube sailers and you are the first one to show me this. Thank you!

    Nice, been to that pump out and truly is that easy as long as the police boats aren't hogging the dock.
    Minor point: I would highly recommend NOT leaving precious items like the waste fitting key and and the cap outside the gunwhale. It only takes a passing boats' wake or a slip to offer those items as sacrifices to Neptune. Many newer designs have a stainless beaded cord attached to the cap, but as a general rule i don't keep anything outside the cockpit unless its tied to the boat or me. Cheers!

      Yep! Definitely dropped the cap in the water before. I actually dove down and found it once, but second time not so lucky. Thanks for watching!

    Great video! Thank you! I'm planning on purchasing the same.boat. Catalina 30. Therefore all these tips will come in super handy. I'm debating between the 27 footer and 30. However I think I'm going with the latter.

    Most boat owners I know will not take a # 2 on the boat at dock. They either use the dockside restrooms or even a paint bucket with a garbage bag as a line and toss the "waste" bag into the trash dumpster. The smell from the odorous excrement will over time permeate (the word they use) through the hoses into the boat..

    How does the suction work? Does the holding tank have some hole to let air in to make the suction work??

    • @OnTheDocks
      @OnTheDocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes there should be a vent hose on the top of the tank that vents to the outside. That is what brings in air when you are sucking out the waste. Thanks for watching!

    Hi! Is your tank a diaphragm/ soft or is it solid as in hard walls? If it is solid, is there a vent that needs to be opened during vacuum?

    • @OnTheDocks
      @OnTheDocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it is a solid black plastic tank on the port side. Yes there is a vent, but it does not need to be “opened”. It is open all the time. Should be a tube that runs from the top of the tank to the exterior of the boat.

    I just bought a 1986 catalina 30. The holding tank is black....how do you know when to empty it?

    • @OnTheDocks
      @OnTheDocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a vent tube that runs up out of the counter top in the head and it acts as a little “sight” to tell you when the tank if completely full. Not sure if it is like that on all the boats though. Thanks!

  • @starwasfanflim6966

    How can you tell if the tank is full?

    • @OnTheDocks
      @OnTheDocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! So there is no real sensor on the tank so the only way to tell is by the clear vent tube for the holding tank that runs up out of the boat through the head. As you’re flushing the toilet you just have to watch that tube and if you see a little bubble or anything then stop immediately because you’re full. Thanks for watching!

    how do you pump out at sea? do all boats have setup to pump out at sea?

    • @OnTheDocks
      @OnTheDocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To pump out at sea you need a macerator pump. Most oceangoing boats will have that setup. It will pump everything out the bottom of the boat. Don’t do it in the bay though!
