I get what you mean, but I fundamentally disagree. You take away from the journey of a charactor by resurrecting them. Even in Star Trek 3 when they resurrected Spock they realised that, that's why they destroyed the Enterprise and Killed David, to give a comparable emotional impact. The "Kirk" in this short film isn't acting anything like the real Kirk. Nothing makes sense. It's a piece of art, perhaps a beautiful one, but it's NOT Star Trek.
Kirk died in Generations. I dont think the OTOY film lessens Kirk's death OR life, for that matter. He isn't resurrected except for on film, but that's it. If anything, I think this was more personal for both Shatner and Nimoy (at least the latter's estate), as Shat had prior commitments at the time of Nimoy's death and couldnt be there fir him. The OTOY film was just the right outlet for that kind of closure, not just for the actors on a personal level, but for the characters' story archs as well. As an 80s kid, I wouldve never expected the OTOY film, but I'm so, SO glad it happened. I feel it is a final testament to the love these men (both actors and characters) shared for one another.

He has godlike power, but is not to be confused with God. They don't really address God on Star Trek. (even Q is a child of God, if there is one.) The only time I can remember them addressing it, Picard basically explained that he's a Deist. In the scene where a godlike alien wants to observe all the different ways the die, so Picard is going to scuttle the ship, and Data (it turns out not to be Data) asks him what death is. His answer is the answer of a Deist. 🙂 I dunno, like I said in my other post, its an interesting idea but it's just not what I got out of that video. Sorry. Garry Mitchell is a God in Star Trek Cannon. He dictated the events around the return of Kirk. And Mitchell sees Time as Fire, “the Fire in which we burn.”
Just to start this off on the right foot, Kirk is not dead. I say that, because as you mentioned, Spock died, Picard died, Data died, and they were brought back to life. It didn’t change their life goals, all it did was bring back a character that was beloved, and quite frankly was a ploy to keep fans coming back. So why not with Kirk? He was/is the captain that started it all. (Yes there were others before him, but I’m talking about the series, as TOS came before all the rest, and Kirk was the defining character of the Star Trek world) What we may take away from Unification is that Kirk could have been in the afterlife, experiencing the death of Spock, or he could have been revived as may have happened in one of the novels. But mainly I think Unification was just a tribute to Kirk and Spock, nothing more. To be quite frank, this should have been about the gathering of TOS crew, and we should have seen all of those original cast paying tribute. As for Kirk dying in Generations, it was the worst thing Paramount could have done. Well ok, so his apparent first death at the beginning of the movie made sense, as he was doing what Kirk always does. Had they left it at that, it would have been a fitting ending to Kirk, as he was doing his duty. But when they brought him back, they should have left him alive, to do more in the universe. (And the franchise) His death scene was lame. I think even William Shatner was not very happy with it. Sometimes we don’t get to analyze our lives to the point that we know to make the best of it. And sometimes dying and coming back from death is the only way to KNOW that you need to do things different with your life. I know this to be true, as I have personally died, and come back. My life now is more meaningful. So dying is not the end all to anyone. There is the paint where you can be revived, but if not, then you will go to a place that is different from this plane of existence, and you will have fulfilled your destiny as it was intended. So in conclusion, Kirk can come back, it is possible in the Star Trek universe, and I found that seeing Kirk one more time, just made his place in the universe more poignant than if he died that second death. Maybe he will die again, and it may be quietly in his bed. It would not take away from the legacy he has become. Kirk is alive, and still has a place in the universe. Live long and prosper.

I don't think it means anything for the character. OTOY paid some homage to these legacy characters that the vast majority of fans loved. They did it to showcase their technology of what they can do now. But that is why they put elements of TOS, STD, STP, and the Kelvin Trek in the video. I personally don't know what the people who made this short think of STD and Kelvin Trek, but they put it in for a nod to all the fans of these Treks. I think it was simply to give them a send off that was heartfelt. Rather than old Spock dying off screen and the way they ended Kirk. I mean it makes sense that Starfleet would get Kirk's body off of that planet for the same reason they got the Enterprise off. And no doubt anyone from the Enterprise that died when it crashed. So I took it as Spock and Kirk are just going into whatever comes after this life together.
James T. Kirk, Captain Starfleet, died helping another Captain save MILLIONS of people AND an entire planet! His choice! Of course, our beloved Trek can go back in time and present us with new adventures! I didn't see where thr Borg resurrected Captain Kirk so if someone knows the episode, please advise. Ok, I can and will search TH-cam, but I love the camaraderie of us fans...blessings to ALL...
I didn't like "Unification" one bit. It makes no sense to me. At first I thought it was something in the Nexus, or he was on a holodeck. If it's after Kirk died (and this is the first time I've heard that suggested) then how did he come back to life? Where is he supposed to be, and why are all those people gathered there? Above all, "Unification" just isn't in line with Kirk's character. Kirk wouldn't be wandering around silently like some kind of placid videogame zombie, he'd be TALKING and taking action - grabbing those people and asking "Where am I!? YOU-ANSWER me, where am I?" I am yet to see anything made in this century that I consider legitimate Trek. For the record, I like Generations. Yes, it could have been way better, but I'm really glad we not only got to see Kirk and Picard meet, but they made a whole movie around it. It's satisfying. Kirk's death may not have been ideal, but at least we got to SEE his death, at least Shatner FILMED a death scene, bringing a sense of closure to Kirk's story, which is sadly more than can be said for all the other TOS characters who drifted off into obscurity never to be seen again. I have no problem at all with Kirk being buried beneath the stars on an uninhabited planet. It's the ultimate serenity and kind of makes the entire planet his graveyard. And maybe the rocky grave WAS only temporary. If Starfleet didn't relocate the body, I'm sure they would have come back and given him a proper burial and tombstone. Actually, the thing I hated most about Generations was destroying the Enterprise D! That ship was made for the big screen and yet as soon as they get into the movies they retire it!

Picard could not shine Kirks boots! OTOY and The Roddenberry Archive allowed Kirk and Spock to ride off into the sunset together.
This is a lovely, thought out reply Thank you
@ it was my pleasure, and was something that I feel deeply about. I’m glad I could have contributed something. 🙂
I designed Mars rovers, sent drawings to Roddenberry April 1987 with ghostwriting for him to relay to JPL.I found Mars people 2004,serch pics Jerry Lehane Mars, and review previous interviews mass media.
I was 29 in my prime 1987.
Yea, I mostly agree.
It was in a set of books written by William Shatner, starting with The Return.
@@TrekTrav I will read asap!!!!
I agree wholeheartedly
@@TrekTrav 🙂 Thanks buddy! Nice to actually find someone else who isn't orgasming over Unification! :D
Considering James T Kirk isn't born til 2233, I don't know how anyone can pronounce him dead
Awha now?
Saying "Generations" is not a perfect movie is like saying Idi Amin was a bit naughty.
Gotdamn we old as fuck to know who Idi Amin is. 😹💀😭
@@slyguythreeonetwonine3172 Busted!
Riker is correct!
I'm the Ghostwriter/artist for Star Trek 1987 including Generations killing Kirk. I stopped the vid 2 mis in to address some of your points.
Ha?
This makes no sense.
What are going to say , when William Shatner does pass ?
He is 90 + years old you know .
The character of Kirk , yes , it’s time . Heroes and icons have to move on , as god calls them home for supper .
Im an atheist. When Shatner himself does Ill be genuinely sad. He is an Icon.
@@TrekTrav you’re a shatner fan but you do not believe in god . How’s that make sense ? In tos , there was an episode of Star Trek where while on a landing party mission , looking for John gill , uhora was monitoring the planet’s communications . There was always the reference to the SUN . IN THE END OF THE EPISODE OF STAR TREK UHORA EXPLAINED WHAT THAT REFRENCE TO THE SUN WAS . It wasn’t SUN , but SON . Kirk was the atheist . Like you . And more recently shatner paid for a ride to space . He came back crying ( by the news reports I heard ) we are destroying gods creation ! He shouted !
Narrator, I read some of the books, you missed out. They're great.
Are they? I was a kid so I instantly went...nah
What is Star Trek OTOY?
It's the TH-cam channel that made the video about Kirk. OTOY Unification in search should get it.
How can I take your opinion seriously when you say you haven't watched much of the Original Series?
When Generations came out I hadn't. I have since watched all star trek countless times.
❤❤❤
He's dead, Jim
Dude, u clearly didn't watch or remember all the movies. Spock never visited Kirk on Veridian 3!
Lol, OTOY the company who did the video of Kirk visiting Spock has an older video where Spock visits Kirk's grave.
Go on a ten mile walk..see how good you actually are.
I'd go on a ten km walk, because I'm Australian.
Picard could not shine Kirks boots! OTOY and The Roddenberry Archive allowed Kirk and Spock to ride off into the sunset together. Paramount wasted millions on Discovery and Lower Decks when they could of had Star Trek Excalibur with Capt. Mackenzie Calhoun and Cmdr Elizabeth Shelby. Star Trek Strange New Worlds is a good effort but some episodes are filled with stupid and idiotic themes and story lines. There is such a rich amount of Star Trek inspired material that has been written over the five plus decades that could be translated into wonderful shows or movies. The People at Paramount would rather pay their friends who hate Star Trek to write garbage shows and expects long time fans to eat it up! Thank You OTOY and The Roddenberry Archive for a small glimpse into what can be done with your technology! True ST Believes would love to see more of what can be done.
If you say so
Kirk is well alive (mostly) on Daystrom station! Duh!
Argh...I hate that.
That was Gary Mitchell not Gary Seven. You really shouldn’t bother to make such a video if you’re not exactly aware of the specific characters within it. Do your homework. Otherwise, it tarnishes your opinions since it makes people question whether you really know what you’re talking about.
Dude, people knew what I was talking about. That's why the nitpickers needed to point it out.
You have never watched the original?!? There is no hope for you.
Ffs, When Generations came out I hadn't. I have since watched it back and forward many times.
@@TrekTrav Well the for F's sake you should have said so. Hope you learned what REAL Star Trek is.
@brianofphobos8862 lol, I often think about making a video on TOS, but after my Disco video I have to let people cool down.
@@TrekTrav Wise.
Watch the TOS
I hadn't watched it when Generations came out. I am now 40 and have watched it back and forward.
The word "the" is redundant! You mean "Watch TOS"
Newsflash: Star Trek is dead.
Newsflash....you aged out.
Hi
Howdy!
The good thing is, this is not canonical so inside of canonical Star Trek he is still dead.
I'm okay with that.
Oh shut up!
