Well darn spelling error, and the reason you don't own one is you don't like them. 😒😜 Would have gotten the carbon steel version but the Olive Wood is just Awsome. Thanks for the video.

my Opinel #8 stays in my pocket , i use it more than any other knife i have ever owned . i own 13 acres that i " farm " and i use this this knife for everything from sharpening pencils to trimming horses hooves . it takes literally seconds to go from dull to razor sharp on a ceramic rod . and if i loose it or break it i'm only out 13 bucks !

What got me started on knives (at least as far as my current obsession) was a Nutnfancy video about Opinel knives. Ordered a No. 9, and then a No. 6 (both Inox) before the first one had been delivered. I don't carry them very often, but I still have them, and I still keep them sharp.

I like to think one of the reasons why this company sticks around with little to no change is for the user who enjoys quick care on super affordable knives. That thin stock will lend itself to slicing capabilities that much higher priced steels will fall short of. Everything is a trade off and this company does have appeal.

Opinels have a couple of advantages--the first advantage is that if you lose one or break one, replacement is going to be less painful than with a $300 knife and one you learn to open an lock with one hand, it is less scary

Hi guys! some background info: these knives are absolutely the essential tool of french country life. Farmers ALL own these, when i was a kid and went on vacation to the alps with my parents we used to stay with farmers who cleaned their sheeps feet, cut their cheese, peeled their potatoes, and cut their food and bread with this knife. Yes, the same knife. with some cleaning in between of course. It's possibly one of the only actually good technological products out of france that doesnt break down after moderate use. Abolute workhorse of a knife and cheap as dirt. I still have mine from the 80's. It's an absolute charming no nonsense kind of tool, and it opens bottles of wine too!! A GA-RON-TEE! HON HON HON!

Opinel folders have a convex grind, not full flat. Maintaining it on strops or sandpaper backed by something soft will let you keep a zero convex grind, just like a Rockstead, but about $1500 cheaper.

Now that I look at it, I really like it. It's kinda tiring to watch those titanium diamond infused ceramic bearing hand engraved tactical spear point recurve flippers. It's just a sweet little knife, and all we really need. Not that I wouldn't carry a more "serious" knife, but the Opinel won't scare anyone, looks way better for cutting bread than doing it with your fancy knife, it's just perfect.

  • @brianmacdonald3292

I don't think these opinel knives are really intended to be anything but a picnic/food knife. Take one to your next steak dining experience and just enjoy how excellent they are at the table. They just got popular for all sorts of tasks because they are just the best when used at meal time. (Not prep) Try it against any other folding knife at the dinner table and then you can finally appreciate it's form and function. Thanks for reading my comment.

    • @jamesraykenney
      @jamesraykenney 6 ปีที่แล้ว

If it is like mine, it is NOT a flat grind at all... Watch the reflections on the blade as he moves it. It is a FULL convex grind from spine to edge. put a piece of 800 to 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper on a old style thick mouse pad and lay the entire blade flat on the paper and pull back AWAY from the edge with just a little downward pressure and you will have a nice strong very sharp edge. You can finish up by doing the same on a piece of leather with some green compound rubbed on it and raise the spine up about a blade thickness and do about three pulls on each side... Then you should be able to shave with it.

I just received my first olive wood knife. I smoothed and sharpened it. I told my wife it is ready for her to inspect. She looked up from her gardening, yah, but no long presentation. So I held it up and spun it around. Stop! Hold it still! Oh my that is the most beautiful wood I have ever seen! Boiled Linseed Oil brings out the grain without hiding any texture. Even has a bit of a three dimensional look to it! Trick to unboxing is to back stroke on folded over box flap after use to wipe off tape glue, and strop to the razor edge once again.

I bought an Opinel No 5 at a gun show years ago.
    Only $5 plus tax.
Have Never Used It for Anything.
    Yet.
A good knife for the cheap price!!
But the Opinels were conceived in the late 1800s, and knife technology has Moved On Immensely!!
    Pocket clips.
Liner locks and back pressure locking devices.
The Opinels Don't Lock until the Opinel NO 6.
    The unique French locking collar.
The Opinel is a Classic knife, to be sure!!
But it's Absolutely Not Good for Any Kind of Hard Use!!
Because the blade, though Very Sharp right out of the box...is Way Too Thin to handle Any kind of Rugged Field Use!!
    Absolutely NO Battoning!!
The too-thin blade would Surely Break!!
    SMH.
    A Good Knife.
But practical Only for slicing carrots or slicing tape off of boxes.
And for skinning both Large and Small game.
That is...in the experienced hands of an Expert.
My Opinel Number 5 is merely a Collector's Item.
But now that I think of it...perhaps it's time t' Use it...

You two are the only ones who can talk 11 min about an opinel. But you two probably spend a lot of time editing your videos!! And Frankie no disrespect but as most women do you can extend a video with your commentary. I know someone else that does the same I just don't tape her commentary for good reason. Gotta go someone's calling me!!!

I'm sorry , I never cared for those opinel knives. Rather have a falcon manual stiletto. You can still open those with one hand. And their just as old.
