The Controversial Comeback of Israel Folau

  • New information about the Israel Folau 'situation' has been presented in a new two-hour documentary. This is a detailed summary of all the main points, and to be honest... it changed my perspective of him.
Israel Folau's decision to share his beliefs on social media sent the rugby world into absolute chaos! While many of us thought he would never step foot onto a rugby pitch again, he will be a key figure at this years Rugby World Cup.
A very messy ordeal, which saw pundits from around the world giving their opinion. To this day, bills in parliament are still pushing for changes to the 'Folau law' in legislation.
Hope you enjoy this video. All use of footage is completely transformed to suit alignment with the research essay / analysis and adheres to fair use. If any issues please make contact with me.
As always thanks for watching! & please share with your rugby mates!

Not Christian, believe in Civil Unions for anyone. But to punish a player that is religious for not agreeing with same sex marriage or "idolizers" or "alcoholics" or anything in that damn post is crazy. People seem to forget that he was the cover of a Gay magazine supporting the Convict Rugby team (known for being pro-LGBT) in Australia. He hasnt got a mean bone in his body, and he was treated like a criminal.
Let him play and have fun. As an aussie I'll be cheering for him when he puts on that Tongan jersey!

I’m not religious in any way and agree with the right of gay marriage. It’s a right everyone should have as is the right to free speech as is the right to practice religion. Anyone who argues that you have a right to free speech but not to have to face any consequences is an idiot or a tyrant! I could understand if his personal sponsor decided not to continue sponsoring him but that’s as far as it should have gone.

I’m a queer Australian, and while it may seem harsh and unfair that Folau was punished in that way, especially considering how undeniably exciting and important he was for the Wallabies, I believe it was the right decision, as religion should not be an excuse for hate-speech against other groups. I understand and respect his right to his beliefs, however, these are specific beliefs that he reiterated on multiple occasions on his social media page, in his own time. He is a professional athlete and prominent public figure, he should know better and be held accountable for what he puts out there for people of all ages, races, genders, orientations etc to see.
It pains me as he was such a great player to watch, and does seem like a kind person, but this thing really can’t go unexcused, especially from people in my shoes too.

Another great vid, uggy! Very informative. I'd really like to understand what is a corporations ability to enforce silence from their employees. Eg. In NZ, the bill of rights states all citizens have the right to their own opinion, and also the right to express them. No employer should ever be allowed to impinge on those rights. I personally liked what Benji Marshall said when nrl blocked Folau from returning. The guy hadn't broken any laws, meanwhile the nrl has multiple players with legal issues and convictions, so the standards don't make any sense

BUT that doesn't take away my respect for their talent and their ability to at times put up a display that is pure brilliance. Even though the Kiwi vs. Springbok games are a traditional rivalry, the games we play against Australia are the ones that make me the most nervous, especially when the likes of Israel Folau, Quade Cooper and Michael Hooper are playing. Its also tragic that he is still booed, lets be real the man made a couple of social media posts, people worldwide do far worse, are punished far less and are forgotten by the angry mob much quicker. QANTAS being a major sponsor at the time had a lot to do with how harshly he was punished by RA imo and while Izzys opinions on relationships aren't as socially acceptable as Alan Joyce its pretty obvious from the last couple years who the better bloke is. Saddest part of it all is this guy is one of the best to ever play the game and I'd argue is probably the greatest fullback of all time (will hear arguments for Christian Cullen) and many fans will completely ignore that and just remember him as 'a homophobe'.

Here is the truth, why should someone go against their moral compass to promote something they can't believe in because it goes against their beliefs, this goes for both sides.

I may not share if's position on damnation of those contrary to his families religion, but like many historic figures have stated/acted upon, i will defend his right to say it, to the death. Society, not just rugby, is in profound danger of using sensitive issues to control populations. I love rugby & he was truly a world great player. What a shame, but what a current tonga team? Poor decision by Rugby Australia, proven by settling. I wish they went to court to settle the wrong decision once and for all. He should still be playing for Australia.
On a side note he was a better centre than a FB. Look at his rugby season as a centre with the Waratah’s broke the try scoring record. In my opinion he was always a better runner on the off load, line breaker and fender when running. The FB position needs to know how to read the whole game, know where the gaps are forming and know when to support the running play and when to get back. Izzy didn’t have the rugby brain.

The interesting thing about the whole situation was it kinda exposed how we all viewed RA at time. An Unprofessional tail leading the dog type of organization.
Regardless of what you feel about the sentiments in Izzys post he actually had every right to post it he has protected religious rights in Australia and he didn't post some Westboro crap about the LGBT community. As was RA's right to not associate. However instead of working it out before hand and organizing a contract cancellation with payout, they listened to the real power in Rugby Australia at the time, Alan Joyce at QANTAS.
Raelene was such a disaster for RA and this was the icing on the cake, not understanding the cultural backgrounds of Polynesians peoples really did real damage to the fanbase, players and the organization. Theres a reason after Wallaby vs Bok games the Polynesian players and the bok players pray on the field, they're all Christians'.
My honest opinion, I don't really like my athletes preaching at me regardless of politics or religion. I certainly would have advised Izzy against making such a post but the entire fiasco was a disaster from start to finish. Also I like Squidge as a creator but I think its time to forgive and move on, there are other players for other national teams actually getting away with real crimes and punishment
