- Come along while we plow an old hay field with a vintage John Deere F145H semi-mount plow. It's a system that still works on our farm as we work to maintain our fields without chemicals or commercial fertilizer.
I had one but it was a 3/16, I got a 4020 John Deere and could pull a bigger plow, I had heavy soil so I went with a 3/18 IH plow wtih the auto re-sets. It had a lot more clearance as well and worked well in corn stalks that were in picked corn without chopping the stalks.
There's nothing wrong with a plow. I was in South Dakota years ago and the farmer where we hunted did a side by side comparison of moldboard plow and chisel plowing on a whole section. When he was done combining the soybeans the moldboard plowed section did 10 bushel more per acre.
We’ve always had good luck plowing sod. These fields get worked up every seven or eight years to control invasion of willow and alder.
We had a 5 bottom F145H behind our 4020 back when, but our ground was really fine black sand and was always pretty easy working
That would be nice. We’re clay and rock.
Nice to see that soil getting turned over. I love that smell of the fresh earth getting turned up. Thanks for sharing.
There’s something about an old 4 bottom that gives me great memories of my youth.
Me too. Found this one just down the road in great shape. Just needs new shares.
Just noticed we have the excact same amout of subscribers. Do you guys plow shallow due to rocks? Standard down here is 6 to 8 inches deep. More dirt you turn over the smoother it is. I typically plow 5 to 5.5 mph with an auto reset plow. Got much more tillage to go? Keep the videos coming.
Cool. I wanted shallow to keep all the manure we spread accessible but we ended up plowing six inches when we synced the two plows. You're right it makes a smoother bed to disk. We have eleven acres plowed and another ten or so to go.
Seems to be plowing easy.
Conditions were perfect.
5:02 time for some new points!
Yeah, we replaced them a month ago. I’m about to edit a follow-up video about setting up the plow. It’s working much better😊
The F-145 was a really good plow. Nice to see one still doing it's thing.
Thanks
