I didn't want to be click-baity... but it really did surprise me! Probably my own fault, since I only looked at the Amazon.com description when I placed the pre-order months ago, and it didn't mention the 7800 compatibility at all. I left the loading times in so everyone can see the time the SoC needs to load up the emulator. It's really not any worse than when I hook up my actual 2600 through the RetroTink 2x.
LOL. So.... I'm going to fall on my sword here. When I got the e-mail that I could pre-order it on Amazon, I read through just that one page, hit pre-order, then totally forgot about it until it shipped. At the time they didn't have the 7800 compatibility on the amazon listing. Had I taken 30 seconds to google it, I would have know that. 🤦♂️
So many reviews fail to mention that the 2600+ plays 7800 games. Apparently the box doesn't make that fact clear. I was glad that you were insightful enough to figure it out yourself in the teardown. In my opinion, the 2600+ wouldn't be worth the price without the fact it does emulate both consoles. One thing you need to try, which you didn't cover in the video, is that you're supposed to hot swap cartridges in the 2600+, something you were never supposed to do on the original hardware. This cuts down on the os and emulator reloading, saving a lot of time.
I found your video amusing. Your mannerisms are that of someone who's lived under a rock and are blind and deaf to the world buzz of this release. I also was slightly amused because you had zero clue of the need to dump the cartridges to play. For that reason it is slower loading. It is smaller for reasons of modern boards since 1970s. Technology warrants smaller console too, is smaller for modern gamers who generally have so much clutter around their multiple setup areas. Same with 4 switches. There is no need for 6 And by the time you opened it, you know that it uses dip switches because of emulation. The other things I have to say are useless after you grasped. But you, as smart as you are, should know about the release.
I appreciate that. I kind of did live under a rock about it, but that was because my life got hectic in the same period. I got married and bought a house and basically forgot about it. I knew from the launch that it would be an emulation box, but I guess I expected the 10-in-1 to be a flash cart of some type. It all makes sense now as I play with it. I really do love it though. And I'm excited to have it in my living room for when we have company, so we can play Combat on my big TV.
@realchef_tom that's what I hoped. That going into it, as you say, that your investigation would show it working favorable. I confess a secret. I've had mine for the time it got delivered. I moved a week later. And just now Xmas, I finally have it connected at my new place. And still, all I know about what it can do is by watching you, and others reviews. I have old 2600 games and 7800 games and bought some PAL 7800 titles to experiment. So I'm basically going in blindly. More importantly, I'm afraid of putting in some of my games and seeing the dreaded fail loading. Congrats on marriage, and house. May both last a lifetime ✨️

I connected my Atari to the USB port on my TV🕹️
FYI - You can hot swap your games on the 2600+.
Wait, WHAT?!?
Is that because it dumps it to the SoC, so it doesn't need the cart after startup?
The unit still needs the cart after startup. Hot swapping reduces the initial time of the Atari screen boot process.
You should've tried using a genesis controller on it.
Ooooo..... I might have to try that! 🤣
My 2600+ doesn't work with Genesis controllers
Glad to see you back. Congrats on the new place!
I want to see what modders can do with the firmware.
I just saw on Reddit that there is already a firmware update. I'll have to look into that tomorrow.
Rumours? it was advertised that it would LOL

Hey Tom what do you think about the Atari 2600 plus❤I love it looks so cool🕹️🕹️🕹️
I m quite thoroughly enjoying it!
Especially with the switch on the back to have it output in a 4:3 mode, which makes it look so much better (to me).
Are the emulations spot on?
As best as I can tell with the carts I have on hand!
The Lego 2600 set costs $191.99 on sale at Best Buy and is $239.99 regular and it's just a static display. Definitely a better value than that!
I've spent more on Lego kits that have brought me less joy. Now I think I may need to grab that too.
My wife would kill me, though.
That lego set is so cool, tho.

It's not mentioned on the box anywhere. I checked.
I keep thinkin either arcade 1 up or buy a big monitor game system and controllers build my arcade cab.
I've built a couple of emulation stations over the years. A cheap mini computer and the RetroPie software on Linux works really well.
Sure the Atari is great and all, but what I really want is some of those gummi bears.
They are pretty tasty. I hope Mark Fixes Stuff doesn't mind that I snack on his friends.
While it looks like an Atari 2600 it is more like an Atari 7800+
Seriously! You have no idea how excited I am to play more Pole Position ][
That has been known for several months. It looks like EVERYONE but you knew the 2600+ plays 7800 games LOL!
Basically, yeah. I had ordered it and then it totally fell off my radar until it showed up!

I've had Pole Position do that once but a little Deoxit and it booted up the second time.
