    This game was just utterly amazing. My god, never have I ever been so immersed and connected to characters in a video game before. And whenever this theme played in Dana's memories I couldn't help but shed a tear haha. 10/10 would wipe out my memories just to relive my experience playing this phenomenal game.

    This a rather unique twist of an opening theme compared to the previous titles (unless if you count The Oath in Felganha). But it really does a good job capturing that epic, adventurous feel in its own way.
    Anyways, this game has been one of the most replayable JRPGs to me alongside Xenoblade Chronicles, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound. Despite this being my first title of the series, Ys games are usually known for prioritizing gameplay over story, but somehow this game manages to excel in both.
    While some mileage may vary on the latter, I was always on the edge of my seat...wondering what mysteries await as the story unfolds as well as loving the lore that comes with it. It may not be a perfect plot, nor is it as detailed as some of the other JRPGs stories out there (especially the Trails games which were made by the same company)..but it's definitely one of, if not, the best written tales in the series in my opinion.
    The cast that accompanied Adol in his journey were incredibly charming and endearing. Yes, some start off as common anime character archtypes, but those slowly start to fade away the more you venture and know about them. They all come from different backgrounds, but the deserted island setting really helps deepens the bonds they develop. Heck, even the silent protagonist Adol shows quite a bit of personality in the game. The NPC of castaways are also charming and fun to interact with. I'd be bold to say this game has some of favorite main casts in any JRPG ever.
    The scale and design of Seiren was always a sight to behold, no matter where you were. It felt a lot like Xenoblade where you could almost go to any location you can see in the horizon. And the lush visuals compliments the areas as well...even if they were a bit low res. Heck, I always get a kick out of seeing the sunrise everytime you wake up from campsites.
    I usually enjoy action JRPGs, and this game is no different. It's simple, fun, fluid, and fast-paced gameplay really highlights what the series is usually known for without ever growing stale. While I mostly played as Adol, every other character was a blast to try out. There wasn't a single character I dislike playing as, which is a very rare thing in JRPGs.
    The soundtrack is among some of Falcom's best, even after playing some of their other entries...Ys VIII's is still one of my favorites. From the symohonic, waltz-like feeling Dana's theme...the upbeat, rocking adventurous start of Sunshine Coast Line...or the calm, yet mysterious Eroded Valley...just about every track in the game is well-varied, and fits the setting it's in to me. The voice acting is also surprisingly good, both in English and Japanese.
    Side quests are simple and easy to do thanks to the streamlined icons marking where you need to go...whereas in most games where you usual have a difficult time finding the specific thing you need to complete. The side quests in this game don't waste too much of the player's time, and you get some pretty good rewards and world-building out of doing them. Icons telling you where to find certain materials from landmarks and enemies makes it a lot easier and less tedious to farm for certain materials.
    All in all, Ys VIII is one of the greatest experiences I had with any video game ever since Xenoblade Chronicles (I can't help it if I'm bringing it up a lot, okay? I love the game that much). It was one of those games that always got a joy out of playing and could never stop putting my controller down. To me, it's a near flawless game that managed to wow me the more I played.
    Hopefully, Ys IX will give me the same feeling that VIII did. Because Trails of Cold Steel III certainly did that for me as well.

      Wow. You captured *exactly* my feelings. I did not play Earthbound, but I haven't felt so much fun and excitement since Xenoblade Chronicles, and I often kept thinking "this is just like in Chrono Trigger!!"
      I could go on but I would just repeat everything you said!

    • @AyoTech83
      @AyoTech83 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Repped for truth, especially the characters' part. I was kinda amazed to see the story slowly tearing away at what looked like anime cliches, and revealing their complexities and details that made them that way. Sahad and Laxia for example, the latter was kinda annoying with her tsundere persona, and then later you discover why she treats Adol that way, and you go "Ohh, I see...". Or the former, who was borderline insufferable at the beginning of the story for me, and when I was in the end, I couldn't avoid but look at him and think "Man, Sahad is such a homie!".
      The same applies to probably even the minor characters, to be honest. There was something kinda ingenious about being stuck with those same people in the island, so every time you're looking for something specific, you will always go to that guy, or that gal for it, and in a way, forces you to get acquainted and know them. At the last portion of the game, I'll be honest, it felt very comfy every time I had to go back to Castaway Village, be it to get some medicine, forge new weapons, or harvest some vegetables, and doing that with the same, familiar faces. Even in raids btw, it's nice to see the castaways you like more performing great once in a while.
      Idk, sounds silly but it is in the little details like these ones that we separate good games from truly great ones. I don't think I even need to say which side Ys VIII falls for me, of course.

    • @The_Admiral_Angel
      @The_Admiral_Angel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@AyoTech83 Couldn't have said it better myself. What you said about Laxia and Sahad is also how I kinda felt about Hummel and Ricotta at first. I was concerned about how Hummel started out as this edgy, broody, lone wolf type of character, but actually has some endearing and quirky character traits that makes him really likable once he opens up. His tragic backstory also explains why he's the way he is, and why he honors his family's traditions so much.
      As for Ricotta, I was a bit worried that she'd be this overly hyperactive wild child that would get annoying real fast, but that definitely wasn't the case. She's surprisingly mature due to her experience in surviving in the wild, and being around Thanatos' made her more human as well. But I also found her curiosity about wanting to learn the world from beyond the island really relatable. Most kids in real life are curious about lots of things, and it's pretty endearing. And the way she sees the main casts as a family is super cute too. Especially with Sahad. You can really see how much of a dad he is when Ricotta's around him, and it's so wholesome.

      @@disgustedluigi I think it's open to disscussion, if the old world was a dream of Maia and the new one a creation she made from scratch, then isn't the new world more real than the last one? Especialy since it's now independant from Maia's sleep. Though I give you that: the new world didn't realy start from the "beggining" but from the point the goddess woke up and created it and technicaly speaking, all the events, memories, personalities are a bunch of "data" she shaped the world arround. But no one is aware of that and I think it's for the best. And yes I agree with you, it was a depressing ending regarding Dana's situation but a beautiful one nevertheless :)

      @@GiordanDiodato it has a bad ending, a normal ending, and a true ending, and the true ending is the canon one. But even the bad ending is a better ending than Lost, because 90% of the characters are still alive and the events of the dream still really happened. Of course, it's actually harder to get the bad ending than the normal ending, since you have to more or less handicap yourself by not doing as much of the optional content as possible, which makes the game way more challenging than either of the other endings.

    So early in my relationship I wanted to introduce my girlfriend to my passion of video games and I started her off with games she grew up with like Sonic the Hedgehog 2. As I introduced her to different genres she definitely favored the RPGs like Child of Light and Trials of Mana over the platformer and adventure games like American Magee's Alice and Aladdin for the Sega Genesis but she also enjoyed Zelda Link's Awakening which was more adventure than rpg.
    She took interest in this game when my cousin got it for me as a birthday gift two years ago. After watching me play it for two hours I let her create a file on her own Switch Profile and she just took off. I've refrained from continuing my file because I've just watched her fall in love with this game. The music. The characters. The bosses. The story. I've seen her cry over Dana, melt over Paro, laugh hysterically over Sahad, and get motivated against the intense raids thrown her way.
    Two years later she's now my fiancé and last night she just got the True Ending with 210 points and; after the credits, told me this was her favorite video game. This game reminded me of my first playthroughs of my all time favorites: Xenoblade Chronicles, Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Tales of Symphonia, FFIX, Twilight Princess, and Chrono Trigger.
    It brings me great joy to see a game have such a magical effect on her the way those other games did on me. A fantastic gem! Now to continue my file!

    Bought this game on the Switch roughly 6 months ago in April or May of 2020. Completed it once, including the super boss in Post Game. Haven't touched it since. However, this game hasn't left my mind at all... In fact, I find myself constantly wanting to replay it over and over again. What stops me is knowing what happens, that bittersweet dread. I love this game so much, but I can't. Not again. I'm not strong enough.

It made me very depressed. :( I miss this game and I wish I erase my memory of playing it and experience it again from scratch. This game had everything it needed, and the landmarks were the icing on the cake. It felt like a literal adventure and the characters were so interesting and unique that they felt like true friends you could trust. From sailing over-seas and getting attacked by a giant tentacle, to crossing the sandy beaches, through the forests, over the mountains, back in time, across the Primordial expanse, to find everyone and discover ship blueprints were with us all along, now to under the sea, fighting the giant monster that landed us on the island in the first place. What an adventure! Oh, don't forget the ghost ship!
