Another mower saved from scrap! Good job! I was wondering, at first, if the previous owner had ordered the correct wheels, but they seem to work OK with the new gears. Thanks for the video!

This was definitely a bit of a head scratcher, and I really wish I had the old wheels to look at. But we fixed the only smoking gun we could find so now I just have to mow with it and see how it does.

I'm having the exact problem with my 8y old Toro. Took wheels off few weeks ago and saw similar wear with the gears but just didn't think that could be the problem. Looks like I'll be ordering a couple of new gears. Thank you for the video.

No problem! Hope it works out for you 👍🏻

Good job, JD! Seems to be a very subtle difference between functional and non-functional with those gears!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about small engine work, it’s to look really closely at things because tiny details can make huge differences.
I was using two magnifying glasses, spaced a distance apart, to really see some things until recently. Then I learned about how to use my iPhone - zooming in as much as possible to take a photo, then blowing up the photo to the maximum. Turns out that combination results in 14X power (something I calculated myself). No I don’t have to buy a good quality jeweler’s loupe!

Agreed! After many years of abuse the old eye-crometers are getting a little tired 😂

I was a diesel mechanic for 60 years and my back hurts all the time also so in my small engine shop I have every thing to keep from lifting also 😊

My back is garbage! Work smarter not harder 👍🏻

I'm wondering if the wear on the axle gears might have been caused by worn axle bushings, if they exist. If there are axle bushings, and they are wallowed out even a tiny bit, the slop could be enough to cause the metal gear on the original wheels to misalign with the axle gears and produce the wear you showed. This may be why the new wheels have plastic gears, to reduce that wear.Just throwing out a guess, I guess. Love your videos!

I agree with you, I couldn’t find any bushings in the parts break downs but that’s not to say they don’t exist. I’m not completely satisfied with this particular repair but we found a smoking gun and now all we can do is see how it performs 👍🏻

Did you determine if those gears are brass or bronze and whether the original wheel ring gears were plastic or steel? It’s failure analysis I’m after at this point. I want to know how and why this occurred for future reference. 👍

I’m 90% sure they are a sintered bronze material, only because they don’t seem to rust. Agreed I’m not completely satisfied with the outcome but it’s much better than it was and seems to be improving with use
