Flight of the Balsa USA, "Smoothie"

Decided on going all electric and changed my mind, can't seem to shake the desire to have a nitro plane. If you don't want to hear me blather on, FF to 5:45 for the take off. To see me nearly crash into my face on landing, FF to 11:30.

John - I believe you have a Super Sportster, not a Smoothie. Three differences I see between them right off is the Smoothie has tapered ailerons, the Super Sportster has a stringer turtle deck while the Smoothie has solid wood, and the Smoothie uses a dural style landing gear mounted to the fuselage just ahead of the wing while the Super Sportster has wire gear mounted to the wing.

Fun video! Despite the trim issues you seem to have a pretty good flyer there. The biggest difference I can see between the Smoothie and Super Sportster 40 is the landing gear. They are both based on the RCM Sportster by Joe Bridi so they will fly excellent once sorted. The SS tends to spring those wire gear. Check your cg is over the spar and that you have weight on the left wing tip to compensate for the engine asymmetry. I'd also check the builder has the correct wing and stab incidence relative to the fuselage side. Bridi always has a datum down the side to make this easy! Gorgeous field btw!

Your plane flies well. On landing just give a slight touch of up and hold it till ready to land. I learned this from a friend and it works for me.

It's better to turn on the TX first, then the RX. Much less wear on the servos, and sometimes you can lose the bind when you turn on the RX first. Yes, definitely a sportster, not a Smoothie.
