Thanks for this - excellent as always. I've watched all your earlier videos about welding fly lines, but for some strange reason, this video motivated me to have a go at welding again (I had some modest success in the past welding loops in t-tips). I had an intermediate 44ft shooting head with a sinking running line, but it was too light for my spey rod. I cut the head at 33 ft, welded loops in the front and back and resurrected an old floating running line by welding a loop. The welding worked really well and the new shooting head and running line are reeled up. Hopefully, the reduced weight and head length will make the line useable with a 6#/7# trout switch rod :)
Do you think a "RIO Products Outbound Short Shooting Head" can be welded to a "Maxcatch Fly Line Floating Shooting Line/Running Line" with good results? I know the Maxcatch is pvc, and I'm waiting on Rio to reply as to what theirs is made out of, though it's subtleness is suggesting polyurethane. I welded a very nice loop in the Maxcatch and fished that way for a while. The loop connection is grabbing my guides more than I'd like, and I'm considering trying to weld the two together, eliminating the loops. I'm afraid to cut the factory loop of the Rio without knowing for sure if it'll melt right. I'm in Florida wading the flats so having a shooting head down here isn't exactly essential for now. Thanks much!
Seriously recommending a cutting mat,and a steel ruler. When the heating ends, put the welded part on the cutting mat inmediately , use a steel ruler rub it repeatedly, you will get a beautiful round and straight welded line.
I did not know why I was able to weld Airflo lines but not others. Thanks for the insights into PVC & PUC.

Yes, they're both PVC. Only Airflo uses PUR. They should weld with no problem.

The thing to worry about - separating the coating from the core. It'll lose a lot of strength in that case.
Hey, great video. How much heat do you need to melt the line?
About 200C
@@hooked4lifecawhat is that in American Fahrenheit degrees?
Peter. Do have videos from the Cape? Or will you?
I have a few old ones, but with COVID I haven't been there in two years and not sure when I'll be back, so nothing recent.
I live in the wilderness without easy access to an electronics store. It is sold on Amazon in 6" chunks.
So, could I take a double taper line, cut it in half and use a running line from an old weight forward line?
Yup!
@@hooked4lifeca I look forward to the video if it is still coming.
Already have an older video that shows how to connect a head section to running line: th-cam.com/video/cV-TzT7YpAs/w-d-xo.html
@@hooked4lifeca where do you purchase your inexpensive heat shrink tubing from? Link please.
