@@Mathcartney That's not how Clapton played his guitars though. He almost never _slightly_ rolled off the tone knob - it was either on 10 or 0, the latter of which was used for his "woman tone". And he rarely if ever set the selector to the middle position. Live it was almost always on the treble pickup with everything on 10 (unless using the woman tone which was usually on the neck pickup with the volume on 10 and tone on 0), plugged into the Normal channel on a '67 Super Lead - also with every knob on the amp on 10.
Clapton's tone had 2 major components...the Amp! and the circuits in the guitar - tbx tone control and that mid-boost. The mid-boost is useless without the TBX tone control, that makes the whole sound big and very clear. He uses no pedals what so ever, except a Wah...he goes directly into the amp, turned to max...and that's where he gets his drive. Also...neck pickup for Clapton tone...huge part...and the neck and middle together...bridge not so much...only on some songs...by the way Layla live was played on the neck pickup..look it up on clapton and friend from the 90's at Royal Albert Hall i think it was...
Clapton didn't have a boost or tbx in original blackie.. those came in his signature Blackie model in 86, which came with LACE noiseless pickups. That switched to fender noiseless in late 2001 due to the licensing agreement running out with LACE. The first live show with his signature model, which was a concept proof, was live at Montreux in '86. The first studio album was August, released later in the year. The original blackie was last used regularly in '85, with the final ever stage performance being one song in '91 at the royal Albert hall
If done properly, this would easily become one of the most watched guitar videos on TH-cam. When it comes to tone chasing SRV is the end of the road, peak of the mountain for countless guitarists.
BlueStratDude ummm SRV is my all time favorite player but a couple things. Hendrix, EVH, and id say really nailing B.B.s tone. Srv is just a 50s pickup rosewood board strat with MASSIVE strings and ramming a fender tweed or even a twin reverb. In step Stevie is more difficult cause he used fenders, Marshall’s, dumbles, stuff like that. And a ts10. Many don’t know that he used the cheaper ts10 once it came out. He had used the 808 some and the 9 for a while but ts10 is closest. Old old crybaby, occasionally a Vox wah even. And a Univibe. He would stack 2 ts10s sometimes too. Stevie’s rig was the definition of straightforward and reliable
This was awesome, Slowhand is undoubtedly one of the greatest guitarists in music and his playing style is just so iconic. I'd love to see a Metallica - By Busting the Bank or a Megadeth - Without Busting at some point as well
Clapton was the man who inspired me the most to want to play.. but to doing a video like this is difficult because his sound and gear changed so much over the years... He needs his own series...60's era. 70's. 80's and so much. Such an influential musician. Living legend
Signature equipment will always be more expensive. But what is that signature equipment based off of? Think about how much his rig cost on VH1. Guitar thrown together with scraps, going into an extremely loud amp and a script phaser. EVH Striped Series or Charvel, Phase 90, and a Marshall/Blackstar and you have pretty much got it on a budget. But that only gets you 10%. The rest is all skill.
That's very true. Brian May's tech said during a rig rundown when Paul Crook (Anthrax, Meatloaf) played through Brian's rig with the Red Special he sounded nothing like him.
It relates to a Sounds Like from a couple of years ago where Matt kept getting it wrong, saying that the Strat they were using was Olympic White, prompting Bea to shout "Arctic White, man! It's Arctic fookin' White!" after Matt fluffed his lines for about the hundredth time.
Clapton is God. That sounded really good, and reminded me how so many of the Great Old Ones did not use all that much gear, but they were LOUD! So, when do we get a "The Captain meets God"?
matt & rabea, when you do these BY busting the bank vids, you could totally use two amps (like both a marshall and fender in this vid) since that's what a bunch of players of this league do & it would fit the theme of busting the bank. that way you wouldn't have to decide between which era of the player to stick to. win win !
Great video guys! I love Clapton and his music... I think that the DB boost is the last knob and the knob with the detent is for tone... The detent area is normal strat sound. Above that you have more treble and lower, bass. I have the Clapton model and i think that is how that works, but I could be wrong.
@@pablofichaje his studio rig was marshall but in a gibson guitar and guitar centre interview i heard him say that later in live performances with cream in their America tour he started using tweed twins because at that time every marshall was different and he was unable to get his lp tone so he tried a tweed twin it sounded similar to his bluesbreaker rig. So i thing is that a tweed twin will be more accurate even though it was not the amp used in the studio.
@@tendulkarification Clapton never used a Tweed Twin during Cream. Throughout his touring in both America and the UK at that time the band was using strictly Marshall 100 watt heads and dual stacks. Tweed Twins would not have given anywhere near enough volume for what Cream was doing. Besides that, I happen to know that Clapton never played anything but Marshalls throughout the entirety of Cream. I'm familiar with the interview you're referring to, but he does not mention that he began using Tweed Fender amps specifically in Cream - he did not. He used them off and on throughout live performances with the Bluesbreakers _before_ Cream formed due to them being more consistent to the "Bluesbreaker" Marshall combo he had used on the Beano record, and he continued using Twins more regularly sometime after Blind Faith. There are photographs however from nearly every live performance that Cream played across their American tours and every single one of them features Clapton and Bruce with at least one if not two full stack Marshalls each. A Tweed Twin will not give you the same sound that Clapton was getting live in Cream.
Clapton has had so many different phases of the sound through the decades. Guitars. Amps. Effects. Bluesbreakers/Cream. Derek and the domianoes. 80's pop. 90's return to the blues. I'd love to see more inept to these different tones off this legendary player
You did a great job guys as usual. The difficulty is early Clapton such as sunshine of your love and crossroads were done on a Gibson. He used a les paul, SG and 335. Also at that time he was using Marshall amps. But given that restriction you did great.
Also, the way the boost circuit works is as follows. The volume is normal, the first tone knob is a Tbx pot. This means from 0-5 it is a regular tone, then after the detent, it adds treble. The second tone knob is the boost circuit. It seems rabea figured that out, but Clapton tends to stay on the neck and in betweens while using the boost.
It's amazing how much better really good gear sounds, even over the internet. Those strat tones are absolutely killer, through a great amp. Well done and really cool comparison to the by not busting the bank video.
there was also a "sound like eric clapton for under £1000" back in the old days of Rob's channel that sounded awesome. Worth a listen if you haven't already seen it.

The middle tone with the notch at 5 is the TBX master tone control. It's not a boost. It is has 2 stacked audio taper pots, the bottom pot is a normal strat tone 250K pot only full travel is 0 to 5 then from 5 to 10 the signal goes to the top 1meg pot which lets way more high frequencies through, which is should help balance the boosted signals. Bottom Tone switch is 0 to 25dB mid boost from 0 to 10. It helps to know how the electronics really work. That must be why you didn't quite sound like Clapton!
I love Anderton's, this video, the whole Anderton's gang etc. Listening to Lee Dickson, Eric's "Tech" for 30 years had some amazing stories, info and insight. What Lee D said, who works for Fender now, plus MojoTone and Bourn (hopefully spelled correctly). Lee D would just bring what he thought Eric would want/need and being great friends, jokingly said he did not listen to Eric, but just brought what he thought and Eric ended up needing it and it was available. Acoustic was an L5 and that a given, to Lee D and I was happy/surprised that Lee D would bring just enough guitars to a show, a different one for every song, but could be colour, with a common theme. Eric did not like wireless anything, hated effects, sometimes would be willing to just use a wireless, but a fun war with effects. I would have assumed Custom Shop Signature Guitar and Eric would play them, but thankfully for me, Lee D noted that Eric like the Artist Series Strats, with TBX, Boost and Noiseless pickups, straight into a Fender Twin, even though many, mostly Fender Amps were used. Lee D noted that Eric played a gig/song, whatever, with Kravitz, "All Along the Watchtower" and Lee D said that Eric had the best tone he had ever heard, in 30 years, with an Artist Strat (non-Custom Shop), with TBX, up to 25DB Boost, Vintage Noiseless Pickups (Standard Artist) straight into a Fender Twin, with a cord, no wireless (Eric apparently hates wireless and effects), Lee D made certain to say and if needed, only a Cry Baby Wah, but all the effects people thought, were in Eric's Fingers and with the boost/TBX, that was it. ** This is the common go to Eric Rig, according to Lee D, Tech for 30 years and Eric could easily do a whole set/often does, with just his hands, regular Artist Strat, Fender Twin, MIDDLE PICKUP and a Cry Baby Wah, if he chooses. He can play everything from Cream too modern, with just this and he wanted the TBX and 25DB Boost in this Artist Series, with Vintage Noiseless to do this. Lee D noted that many persons have asked him, so many times, what all the pedals are, especially for all those tones and the Hendrix tone, but there is none, but the boost, driving just the Twin, with no mods to anything. Why not love the Custom Shops More and use them? He does, loves them, they are stunning, BUT, once played, if a charity wants one to auction, a Clapton Artist Custom Shop Played, obviously brings far more cash for charities and Fender is good with it, because it is good for all, but, Eric is good with the more affordable Artist, with same features. *** I have a regular Eric Clapton Artist, as I can't afford Custom Shop, a very talented gigging friend plugged it into his twin, Cry Baby an option, he played, because I suck and that 25DB boost, will drive a Twin hard enough to get all tones needed, but yes, Eric's hands obviously do most of it. THIS VIDEO ROCKS, ANDERTON'S ROCKS AND THIS IS A COMPLIMENT TO A KILLER VIDEO, not trolling, or anything stupid, but a ton of great info like this, I found on Eric's Gig Rundown Videos, which really just are: Lee D, saying use a less expensive, modern Artist, middle pickup, Fender Twin, Crybaby, end of story. Everyone, including me, thinks there must be more to the sound, but apparently no, but this is the sound now, that can get close to the rest, with Eric's touch. Awesome video! Anderton's Rocks! Videos Rock! You all rock! All the best and be safe! Love these videos and the Anderton's "Gang"....awesome!
Since the late 90’s when he gave up the soldanos, Clapton has been using low powered tweed twins, or the 5e8-a. He actually has a signature amp which is based off of that circuit called the Clapton twinolux. He also has a few smaller signature amps but the twinolux would have probably been the best bet for you guys. Nonetheless, great job!
Yup, Twinolux live. He used a Tremolux paired with his Vibrochamp on the last album. You can check out the setup on his interview/documentary thing I Still Do.
Logan Klein I've commented a couple of times before asking for a sounds like on Nuno, I know Rabea and Rob are big fans and supported Extreme at the end of last year. I think it's the the lack of Washburn in the shop that's stopping it from happening... but any super Strat would do the job.
I can definitely hear that the tone is much more defined than with the without busting rig but without a direct AB comparison of the same riffs being played it's hard to get the full appreciation. I saw someone mention that maybe Matt should use the Without Busting rig opposite Rabea using the By Busting rig so that you can directly compare and contrast the tones live in the same video and I think that's a great idea. As a bonus, you'd also get to see how well the two rigs mesh together.
Make a my bloody valentine sounds like, I think it might be hard but would be really cool. definitely more pedal and gear oriented so its perfect for this show
I agree, but I'll admit it has gotten a bit better later on, when he did the Cream reunion in '05? It got a bit fuzzier and smoother. Also when he went on tour with Steve Winwood it sounded pretty good, there for a while early on it was very thin and brittle sounding!
Do sound like the Catherine Wheel! Probably on your own time as I'm sure about 4 other people would like to see it, but just an amazing hard rock tone with depth to stand up to the grunge scene that was happening in America. Plus Rob Dickenson is Bruce Dickenson's cousin! The first three albums are stellar, mostly Chrome, but amazing guitar tones are everywhere!
AHH that Tweed combo was just epic!!! And holy crap the rhythm was just a Bassbreaker? Listen to that thing punching above its weight and being pretty good next to the best Strat sound I've ever heard on Andertons!
What you guys could’ve done/do later down the line when an artist has changed up there rig like Clapton has, you two should do two separate rigs so you can do both sounds
I think Cream era Clapton needs another Sound Like episode on its own
Agreed
Turgut Kartal I think you’re right haha
There should really be one for yardbirds bluesbreakers cream pre 376 ocean boulevard and after that album
Exactly, i love his Cream time sound
I've always preferred Clapton's 60s to early 70s stuff. Especially his Gibson years in Cream and Bluesbreakers
I feel like Matt should use the without busting version so we can get more or a direct comparison for the money

Sound like Judas Priest and RAMMSTEIN!
I've got the "Crossroads" pedal and a wah and that's pretty much all you need on a small budget. Some talent too of course ;)
Would love to see Sounds like the Beatles
The black strat has a mighty fine sound🤘🏾
No metal zone?
Since the late 90’s when he gave up the soldanos, Clapton has been using low powered tweed twins, or the 5e8-a. He actually has a signature amp which is based off of that circuit called the Clapton twinolux. He also has a few smaller signature amps but the twinolux would have probably been the best bet for you guys. Nonetheless, great job!
Yup, Twinolux live. He used a Tremolux paired with his Vibrochamp on the last album. You can check out the setup on his interview/documentary thing I Still Do.
Sound Like Extreme?
Logan Klein I've commented a couple of times before asking for a sounds like on Nuno, I know Rabea and Rob are big fans and supported Extreme at the end of last year.
I think it's the the lack of Washburn in the shop that's stopping it from happening... but any super Strat would do the job.
That Strat and Amp combo sounds killer!
Sound like paul gilbert
I can definitely hear that the tone is much more defined than with the without busting rig but without a direct AB comparison of the same riffs being played it's hard to get the full appreciation. I saw someone mention that maybe Matt should use the Without Busting rig opposite Rabea using the By Busting rig so that you can directly compare and contrast the tones live in the same video and I think that's a great idea. As a bonus, you'd also get to see how well the two rigs mesh together.
Sound Like Zappa
Do a Prince one - with or without busting the bank, don't really mind. That would be great!
Do a sounds like on Nuno Bettencourt?
Make it happen Rabea!
Magic word? :-)
Andertons Music Co pretty pretty please? With a massive cherry on top!
The knob with the notch at five is a tbx tone control not the boost. The bottom tone knob is the boost
Son House!!! Complete opposite end of spectrum but cool!
And make Matt play the harmonica
Nailed that Crossroads riff. Sounded creamy and dreamy
We need tame impala without busting the bank!!!
Fabien Dolan Those guys use Rickenbackers, right?
Andrew Pappas 2nd album onwards Kevin Parker uses Rickenbackers. However he did use a Strat for the first one
Fabien Dolan squier j mascis would do the job i guess
Well its one guy that records all the music so you just have to emulate him. Ashraf, no using others sigs.
jazzmaster, boss blues driver and a phaser
Great Video Guys. I'd love to see Clapton Cream Era by Busting The Bank, or Keith.
Sounds like ghost
Sounds like avenged sevenfold
Please
I hope you guys do this again, focusing on his pre fender tone, blues breakers, and cream
How about a sounds like Brian Setzer
very simple rig
Gretsch Hollowbody
Fender Amp
Delay pedal
sorted
Good effort lads.
Few possible suggestions for future eps...
Joey Santiago - Pixies
John Squire - Stone Roses
Serge Pizzorno - Kasabian :)
Or John Lee Hooker totally in y’alls wheelhouse!
with Bea playing that rig, Matt should have used an SG and Bluesbreaker Marshall. His two famous rigs at the same time.
can we get a sounds like eric johnson without busting the bank
When you push the 57 deluxe it gets into Neil Young territory. You should do a sounds like Neil Young!
Make a my bloody valentine sounds like, I think it might be hard but would be really cool.
definitely more pedal and gear oriented so its perfect for this show
i thought that said Bullet For My Valentine for a second
now i am upset :(
This is the BEST tone you done so far!
I don't know but I'd like to see ZZ top by busting the bank
Waited for this and was not dissapointed. Great work.
Do sound like Stevie Ray Vaughn by busting the bank
Billy Duffy is my two pence! Excellent as always!
Clapton always sounded best to me when he played Gibsons through Marshall amps. I feel like his Fender on Fender tone sounds neutered by comparison.
I agree, but I'll admit it has gotten a bit better later on, when he did the Cream reunion in '05? It got a bit fuzzier and smoother. Also when he went on tour with Steve Winwood it sounded pretty good, there for a while early on it was very thin and brittle sounding!
Seamus McFlanery. Exactly. 60s Claptob feel !
Being a local Guildfordian, is there a possibility that gear he uses on recordings are from Andertons?
BOB ROSS !!!
Sounds like disturbed next please :)
Clapton is now using a 57 Fender Bandmaster…. Completely customized by Alexander Dumble. Priceless
Sound like Marc Bolan? (T. Rex)
DefinAndStuff I wish
Kirbysanch
Hey man, you never know. Might happen.
AHH that Tweed combo was just epic!!! And holy crap the rhythm was just a Bassbreaker? Listen to that thing punching above its weight and being pretty good next to the best Strat sound I've ever heard on Andertons!
Sound like Van Halen!
Awesome as always. Have you ever done Brad Paisley?
not yet
Metallica by bustin the bank....... pleeeeeease!
Guido Cavalli
They did it already...
SEARCH!!!!
Sorry, they didn' t do a metallica BY bustin the bank
Wak Job wrong
Lot better than the previous attempt. Damn Rabea ,you can play the hell out of that Strat!
Sound like Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes
By or by not busting idm xD
kociogvint yeaaaa
If you wanted a spot on amp.. Should of been 57 twin. But the deluxe sounds great. 57 champ also was the layla amp
SG Clapton > Strat Clapton
Or a Tele Clapton, early days
What you guys could’ve done/do later down the line when an artist has changed up there rig like Clapton has, you two should do two separate rigs so you can do both sounds
Sound like the shaggs or Lil Wayne by bustling the bank thank you very much
What pickups are in Matt's strat? His tone is fantastic in both of these Clapton videos.
