My dad bought me a new Remington 410 when I was 8 years old and cut the stock off so that it would fit me. I still have it and I'm 65.

You were raised a lot like me. I was the youngest of 3 girls, no boys, so I was daddy’s little buddy. He took me hunting and fishing and taught me all he knew about building and wood working. He passed away a few months ago at 89. I really enjoyed your story and seeing that old 410. ❤

Don’t you wish your dad could see this. I know he would be very pleased. Recent years, my husband gave the Grandsons the guns he wanted them to have. Last Christmas they all set down at the kitchen table and got the bag of knives that he had collected for them over the years. Many came from Smoky Mountain Knife Works. Good memories for them.

The craftsmanship is only second to the recollection of a young boy coming of age in the eyes of his father. Then finally the man honoring his father in such a beautiful way by preserving the memory and sharing the experience with others. Thank-you so much. By the way... I'm 64 and my first hunt was with my grandpa and I used a bolt action 410 of his, a gun I still have to this day, along with those memories. ❤

Oh my, this made me cry! I’m so glad you didn’t change out that other original piece-to be able to feel where your Daddy’s hand had been, holding down steady on the game…then you doing the same as a young boy, and a grown man…my my. That walnut stock you made is beautiful and your Daddy would be so proud of you for restoring and preserving that piece of your history.
My Dad and I went to a local store and bought 2 shotguns, the one he bought for me to use was also a 410 single shot. I loved that shotgun. My Dad passed away in 1995. He and I went hunting a couple of times, never forget those times. My Mother just passed away this past Aug. and I’ve looked and looked for the shotguns and rifles; but I can’t find them. Dad and I went deer hunting one time, but I don’t think he enjoyed it much and to tell the truth, he was getting older and I think it was too hard on him-I’m finding that out for myself as I’ll soon be 63.
I taught my children to shoot-mostly muzzleloaders because I could control the amount of black powder to put in. I always taught them to have great respect for a firearm; or any weapon. When I was in High School all the pickup trucks had gun racks with a rifle and shotgun, both loaded. Pickups were usually sitting unlocked with the keys in them! Nobody bothered nothin. We were taught respect for other peoples property; respect for our elders, and to leave things better than when we borrowed them, and to always shut back the gate if we opened it.
Respect and honor. We need to get back to this.
That shotgun is beautiful-I’m still in tears-thank you, thank you, for sharing these wonderful memories and your journey to restore this treasured firearm.
    God Bless.

I have wonderful memories of squirrel camp on the Apalachicola River. I was already a teenager the first time I went but I remember a 5 year old boy getting a 410 shotgun and learning to hunt and clean squirrels. I don’t know that anyone does that anymore but it was some great camaraderie for several families 😊

I'm 70. You made me think of all the frosty Thanksgiving mornings when dad and his friends from the 'Westinghouse factory' came to our farm to hunt.
    It started the early morning.
They came back with their hunting vest full.
I remember watching them skin and pluck the game then the wild game iron smell as they soaked in salt water. It's all over now. Those fields have been taken over by a solar company this year. 2,000 acres of solar panels are being put up as I type these words.
I'm the 5th generation here. My mother had sold all the land around her in order to survive and I have no control over it. It makes me sick to look out and see nothing but black solar panels. Thank God I have the wonderful memories of childhood here. Thanks for bringing the Memories Back Danny.

Your story brought back many memories. I spent many years hunting with my father. To have your fathers gun just as a keep sake is something special. I have several family keep sake guns and will never part with them. They all bring back special memories of their use over time.
The stock cant looks correct for a right handed shotgun. I thought due to your height, you would need a little more cone drop. You are right about drilling the stock screw hole, getting it to line up to the guns tang thread hole. I needed special "Turkey Loads" for my 410 and they were $ 45.00 for a box of of 5 shells. Normal 410 shells are very hard to find around here also. If you can find any they have very few boxes and are costly.

That is a beautiful story, Mr. Danny. I remember Nelly's cafe at 5:00 in the morning-my first cup of coffee. These times in our life are what makes a life worth living. I still remember how bitter that coffee was. That piece of walnut was RIFT SAWN for strength and straight grain on top and bottom, and I tried to capture the cathedral grain on each side, which you brought out splendidly. The 410, not only a piece of history for you, but an heirloom for future generations, like you, to tell their story.

Danny, I'm about 15 years your senior, but your story of your hunt with your dad could be a day out of my own life. I miss my dad even though he passed around 25 years ago. I would love to swap tails with you about hunting, and fishing with our dads. I belive you and I have much in common. Thanks for the memories.

We have the same tradition here Danny. My husband is gone since 2008 but he had several old guns that my sons shot. Those guns were passed to my sons. They are very proud to own them.

When I was a little girl I admired my Grandpa he was a hunter he had hounds and a camp in Gulf Hammock in Florida. I love the woods in the winter good memories at his camp. I remember him cooking swamp cabage and squirrel. He was an old timer.
