      An understandable confusion: ~50% of Russians have Greek names

      I was about to say. Cuz it's a Greek name. Greek or Latin names are common in Russia. I am Russian, by the way.

    They made this video with a $400 budget and filmed it in a closet in one of their apartments. They won their first grammy with this video! They currently have 3 grammies, and their original album Evergreen was also up for a nomination. It's amazing what they can do with their voices. Kevin, the beatboxer, also plays cello. He created cello boxing! It's how Pentatonix found Kevin. Kevin had released a video of cello boxing and it went viral the same week they were searching for a beat boxer. He initially said no, as he was graduating from Yale with a pre-med degree. He decided to give the show a chance, and the rest is history!! Avi Kaplin left the group in 2017 for personal reasons, and Matt took over as a new bass singer. I love Matt the most! He had huge shoes to fill, and he did so magnificently!!

    You’re an excellent beatboxer! This video and Hallelujah both featured their old member Avi (the one with long hair) who was their bass. Now they have Matt (white jacket in Sound of Silence) who joined late 2017. I recommend their 90s Dance Medley to be your next video!

  • @pattis2641
    @pattis2641 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    Since you love rap music, you may want to watch their cover of "Can't Hold Us". Scott, Mitch and Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) all rap in it. I also love their mashup of "La La Latch", with Avi as their bass singer. Sound of Silence is amazing too. Matt does an excellent job in that video.

    They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on
    America's Got Talent as non-competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass.
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
    Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhvmes with
    "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale);
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also. She just got engaged.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and
    Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range;
    Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese.
    Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on TH-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
    Scott & Kirstie (who were a class vear ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC.
    While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
    They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his TH-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing".
    Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale.
    They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours!
    They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on TH-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records.
    They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records.
    Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on TH-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them but when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label.
    They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best-selling genre), and have had multi-platinum album sales, sold-out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
    Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
    Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
    Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. He just got engaged to Kirstie.
    Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
    They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
    They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen.
    Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021.
    They just got their a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.

    Woo-hoo, way to go with the beatboxing! I’m so glad you’re continuing with Pentatonix. It makes me happy when people who know music appreciate their work. It reinforces my own untrained appreciation. There’s a mini-beatbox-battle in their cover of Last Christmas. Kevin seems to be the type of guy who welcome the challenge. Love watching you as you come to know PTX! Keep ‘em coming. Peace … Oh, and don’t worry about blurring or obscuring the videos. As long as you can see it clearly, we’re fine.

    Avi, the bass (beard). He was known for blowing stadium speakers. If you type in Pentatonix Singapore Aha! live. You will hear when Avi's base blew a speaker, yet they carried on. What also makes it extra special is when Mitch is on. The story goes that he was jetlagged and chugged two or three red bulls to give him energy. It makes for an amazing performance.

    I'm about 1/2 a year late, but I really loved this reaction (it might just be my fav)! 1, When you basically showed what and how Avi (insane bass, bassboxinging I think he calls it) and Kevins' beatboxing/percussion, which can prove naysayers wrong about the sounds not being possibly done with only voice, as you did it on the fly as you listened! 2, Your true appreciation of their abilities, always bringing attention to Avi n Kevins' parts that I feel many can inadvertently overlook, and by doing that get more folks not so familiar with PTX, like myself, a full understanding & appreciation for these incredibly talanted humans!

    PTX is a voice technical wonder...their arrangements are exquisite and all of them have their very personal sound which together melts into perfect harmony. Avi, now soloartist, is incredible! The sensational about him is the soothing tone in his voice, laidback but still very powerful when needed to be. I have read a lot of comments from his solo vids and a lot of people thanks him, telling him that he have help them through hard times because of his music and that special soothing voice he have and I agree, you become calm listening to him.

    They do this live as they don’t do something they can’t repeat live. There are some impromptu videos and they hit all the “techno” sounds and breaks as if you were listening to this.

    There was a TV show here in the states, I believe called "The Sing Off", I remember Sara Burrellus, Jewel and other famous artists were the judges. It was all tryouts by groups that only sang acapella. That is where I first saw Penatonix! Followed them ever since! Thanks for recognizing their sound and tight harmonies!❤

    • @janices5389
      @janices5389 ปีที่แล้ว

      And all of the Sing Off performances by both PTX and HF are available on You Tube. HF had already established their sound was touring in rural US when they decided to audition for the show, but PTX had only formed as a 5 member group a few weeks before their audition and actually got together for the first time the day before their audition! Their journey through the competition really shows their talent and growth. The You Tuber Mrduckbear11's clips of the whow include the intros and the judges commentary with an occassional short outro interview with PTX. It's interesting to see reactors views as compared to those of the judges. Whether it's something Anthony might not want to react to, he might enoy delving into those very early live performances just for himself. -- I recommend them for anyone discovering PTX who wants to know their story.

      PTX cover of 'Imagine' is the most creative thing I have seen in a while, making one hell of a social statement while they were at it. The song itself is iconic because it is timeless, it will always apply until Humanity dies out completely. It is timeless because John was a GENIUS.
      PTX did more than just an average job at covering it. They always have a spin on the things they do, besides the innovation that any A Capella group must have. PTX is the top of the Pop Music pile for many great reasons; their cover of Imagine is just one of them. :)

    Actually, at 6:36, that is actually Avi doing overtone singing - he is singing his low bass notes, and simultaneously doing that wind sound

    If you want to see the low notes Avi Kaplan can hit then you should check out their cover of AHA live in Singapore. It is a fan recorded video but so worth the watch.

    I don’t know if you are still reacting or not but I want to thank you for a couple of things. First, thanks for turning off your commenters on the screen, there was just too much negativity for my liking because I come to TH-cam and reactors to lift my spirits. Second, I appreciate your beatboxing skills and find it interesting exactly how some of those sounds are made. I’m 74 and in my era beatboxing didn’t even exist. Finally, I appreciate that YOU have such appreciation for Pentatonix’s skills and their production team, you have to have enough talent to begin with to make that final, professional product as the bright, shiny and near-perfect performance at all. The best sound engineer and videographer cannot turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse. As you know there are some excellent a cappella groups out there (Home Free and Voice Play come to mind) but I have found there is just something very different about Pentatonix’s delivery that sets them apart from other groups, just my opinion. Thanks for all your Pentatonix reactions, I’ll watch them all. You’ll need to be patient with their fans (Pentaholics), they have a tendency to be a little too sensitive sometimes because of their love for the group. You do a great job and I’ll definitely be back for more!

    I loved your reaction. It was really cool to hear you identifying the different beats and rhythms. Not many people can keep up with the maestro aka Kevin. Perhaps the biggest complement I can give you is that, if the unthinkable happens and Kevin leaves for some reason, I think PTX should let you audition for his spot. Laughing. You are obviously v talented. Do u work in this line professionally (I.e beatboxing)?

    After all these years, I still cannot get over that 3 of them went to the same high school together. So hard to imagine that such diverse talent ended up all in one place at the same time and they became besties.

    There are lots of versions of this live and they get all the sounds and skipping record effects in each one. That's always surprising to me that their live performances are equally good. (your beatboxing is amazing!!) - Avi really hits those low notes.....he trained as an operatic basso profundo! There's a video of him performing with Home Free and they have a bass trade-off that's pretty amazing.
