  • The Daily Vinyl video #36: Phil Collins' Drawing Board Rare Home Demos for "I Missed Again" and "If Leaving Me Is Easy"
Happy New Year! Did you enjoy the January snow storm of 2010???
This is the first time I produced a special request by a loyal viewer. The Daily Vinyl video #4 featured the home demo version of "In The Air Tonight" from a Phil Collins Maxi-Single released in conjunction with his debut album "Face Value" in 1981. And someone asked to hear the other demos on this record. (6 months later, here they are!)
It's amazing to me that these demos (recorded in 1980 while Phil was going thru a very rough divorce) were ever released. It's fun to find the the improvised phrases that eventually made it to the final versions. To my knowledge, these versions, entitled "Drawing Board" are not available for purchase anywhere. So please... ENJOY.
(I can't believe Nashville schools were closed for two days for THAT snow!) BTW, the turntable is placed in the exact same spot as the vinyl music video for "In The Air Tonight"

There's literally reverb on the reverb. I love it!
"Hey Phil, how much reverb do you want?"
    _Yes_

No offense taken. I like a little bit of danger. At least I'm filming it for posterity. If anything happens to the vinyl or the player, there's always a video to preserve its memory. Thanks for watching.

I think he should have released this "...Leaving Me..." as the final version, lyrics and all. 7:40 is the best part.

Thanks so much!!! I saw your icon is the YES logo. I've been trying to figure out what YES thing I'm going to do. Of course, most things on Atlantic is not allowed on TH-cam.

What if the studio recording sounded just like the demo version? I love it! :)

I call it EXTREME VINYLING! (And, this specific artistic endeavor was done 4.5 years ago. Admittedly, since then I have become more protective of my records as their value has doubled or tripled since then. You may notice, I haven't made nearly as many death-defying videos in the last few years.)

the record being used is even more rare because of it being a first rough cut demoand electronics and cold do not mix nor does it makes with rare albums

LOL ... I can't believe you played this record outside while it was snowing! Thankfully, the snow was light enough not to have damaged the record! You are correct of course: The 3 tracks that make up "The Drawing Board" were never released elsewhere ... no CD release (I burned them to CD-R for my own collection). An interesting fact about these tracks: The 1st pressing of the British 7" single has longer versions of all 3 tracks!

@ollierulez Glad to do it. If you haven't given it a rating, I sure would like a 5-star to balance-out some jerks 3-star. It's like... c'mon when have you ever seen a turntable... in the snow!!!!

@JeffN727 I have a small cooler that I use for times like these. You can kinda see that I'm squatting at its level and not leaning over something on the ground. BTW, if you haven't already rated, I'd love to get some 5-stars to balance the 3-star rating someone gave it. Thanks!

Good news! you don't have to. I already did it.

Interesting.. "Leaving Me" is a lot more developed lyrically than "Missed Again" at this point, even in Phil's improvisational style.

I certainly wouldn't take my vinyl or turntable outside, any weather.

Now, would't it have been wise to have broken out the dust cover for this one, rather than let the snow destroy this obviously rare gem? It's bad enough that you placed the table out in cold weather. Just saying....Otherwise, keep up the awesome work on your vids.
