Gardelli was a conductor very underrated in Italy where he was often considered by music critics as a dull routinier lacking of inspiration. But his conducting of Verdi's Requiem is truly magnificent: deep, clear, organically flowing and marvellously controlled in sound.
He wouldn't have cared in the least. He was Swedish citizen since the late 50s, and he made important recordings of both known and less known operas for Decca, EMI, Philips and Hungaraton, while guest conducting all over the world, the Met, Vienna, Munich, Covent Garden, Glyndebourne etc. In Italy, the high profile of a Conductor is mostly political.

Les tempi sont justes, l'orchestre fait preuve de vigueur et de sensibilité, les 4 solistes sont épatants (je n'en connaissais aucun), il y a un parfait équilibre entre le choeur, les solistes et l'orchestre. Bref ce n'est que du bonheur. Lamberto gardelli s'est surpassé ! Merci d'avoir posté cette représentation.
I love this performance. I tuned in for Polgar, and he is fantastic. Julia Hamari is a revelation here...so much dynamic variety and shading of the words. Aside from the unfortunate B-flat, the soprano does some beautiful passages. And the tenor is good. Chorus, orchestra, and Maestro Gardelli all impressive.
Wonderful performance with the soloists all singing beautifully. Gardelli's conducting is interesting. At times he seems to be simply talking to the orchestra.

I really wonder why... Because everything I've heard of his seems to be generally very good and this Requiem performance I find exceptional.

Laszlo Polgar is outstanding, no strain at all. Probably the best in this role since Pinza in 1939
