BRILLIANT use of the unique acoustics in St Paul's Cathedral! The Chorus and Orchestra are outstanding, and Bernstein allows his superb soloists to shine.

Every time I listen to Liber Scriptus, it reminds me that that was my most important solo as a lyrical singer, being a mezzo-soprano boy, and my teacher, she was the soprano, we were sitting together and everything was very beautiful, Verdi's requiem will always have a place in my heart.

The thing about the tempi (more elastic than others) is that I think LB was taking into account the very particular echo at St Pauls - so you can't just plough ahead - you have to let the sound ring, and then die before moving to the next phrase - take for instance "et preces hymnus". how he takes it slower - and allows each phrase to ring and end before moving on - for clarity, taste, musicianship and sheer brilliance.

    • @kable321

The original telecast began with spoken remarks by Bernstein. His first performance of the Requiem had been on March 25, 1967, in honor of Toscanini's centenary, with a quartet of G. Vishnevskaya, M. Horne, R. Tucker and J. Diaz. He returned to it in April 1969 with a quartet of M. Arroyo, M. Horne, G. Shirley and C. Siepi. Unfortunately no one recorded any of these. The London performances were followed a few days later with the Columbia LP, LB's final work with this piece. His score is at the NY Philharmonic Online Archives.

This entire performance is a masterpiece itself, but that Dies Irae in particular is unlike any other I've heard in my opinion. The trumpets are extremely clear and the percussion is extremely powerful. Altogether mixed with this tempo really emphasizes the anger of the Dies Irae without it feeling too rushed. Bravo.

...The terror of the days of wrath, the terrible wrath of God...The entire piece presents the pleas of the supplicant, the frightened, the guilt-ridden supplicant to be spared the Dies Ira, It represents the pleas of the self-confessed but deeply penitent sinner that God's mercy be bestowed on him and his.

Ikr I was stunned by the beauty in the young Domingo’s voice .
His legato is excellent and those high notes are very emotional. Plus Bernstein’s expressive conducting

@@Sacha_Kudli I was at New York City Opera when the young Domingo was singing there. What a glorious voice it was then. He was quite active with the fairer sex then as well!

What resonance from the Mezzo soprano! Magnificent voice. Unfortunately the cameras were not always able to keep up with where the action is. Sound quality for this day and age was not refined and defined sufficiently.

This was the second performance of the Requiem, which had lost Franco Corelli; the replacement tenor for the first performance was Robert Tear. Of course, PD was very prominent by February of 1970, but not yet a star name. Bernstein did not revisit the work after making the audio recording for Columbia, after which Bernstein did not conduct Verdi again. This was the first in the series of videos he made for his Amberson Company over the next twenty years.

I like how the sheer power of the sound seems to interfere with the video equipment at 11:17 and 14:25, sending rolling bars of interference down the screen.
