Tiny House Boat Build: I HAVE A HULL (and emotional damage)

  • After three months of trying to build a tiny house boat from scratch, I'm finally on the edge of making some extremely satisfying progress: finishing the construction of the hull. I cannot wait to flip this thing over and start building a little house on top, but first, I have to finish putting the hull together (while trying to avoid emotional destruction, if possible).

About me: I decided to jump on an opportunity to buy a school bus for $1000. After 2.5 years of building and a couple summers doing bus life, I sold the bus and began building a tiny house boat from scratch. My hope is that with a couple years of practice building under my belt, I can do a bit better of a job this time and build something that actually floats 🤞

Boatbuilding is always challenging. The only unfixable mistake you could make is to quit. Things will work out if you persist. Don't put time stress on yourself. Us amateurs simply don't know. May You Stay Well and Happy

Emma, WHEN IT IS TIME TO FLIP THE HULL. I suggest you reach out to some local towing companies. Send them pictures and tell them what you want to do. They could easily and safely flip it using their boom truck. To them it would be just like flipping a very light car back on its wheels. I bet they would even put it in the trailer for you at the same time.

First off young lady you are doing a great job and I'm impressed how you stick to the task at hand. I have built several boats, some from plywood, cedar strip , skin boats and even old school jon boats. If you start to get overwhelmed stop, walk away and relax. Then think of remedies or solutions to your current problem. For example when hanging those side planks making a couple hooks from some scrap plywood would have come in handy. Screw the hooks to the inside of the transom and the bow boards. That puts your plank at the proper height with very slight adjustment. You set both ends up on each hook and bam its very close and hands free now. Every boat and most projects I have built I did by myself. I live in the country and dont have close neighbors and I hate asking for help. Dont get discouraged as long as you are accomplishing something daily you will finish. We are all looking forward to your completed little house boat.
I am not criticizing im just trying to save you alot of struggles. When building a boat think outside the box. Just remember there are no square corners on a boat. Again you little lady are doing fantastic work.

The thicker boards and notches were a happy accident that ultimately made your boat stronger. Nice job! You're doing great.

For the "out of square" issue, the big test is when you measure diagonally from front left to back right; that measurement must be equal to the measurement from front right to back left (basically draw an X across the bottom of your entire boat and the two lines of the X must have same length. If they're not, it's out of square.

Where is the neighbor when you need him? While you may not accomplish a great deal each and every day, I am amazed at your perseverance. I suspect, for no reason yet, that moving from a bus and house to small boat with a small deck may give you claustrophobia and you will be building a larger version... I built a 12' X 16' deck with a metal and clear plastic roof on it all alone after retirement. I used lawn furniture, saw horses, crates and concrete blocks, bricks, and various size clamps to hold pieces in place and level until I could drill a pilot hole and screw together.
Weather is a crap shoot in the short term, the weather scientists can tell you exactly what the weather will be in 50 years, and may get a bit close for tomorrow, but have no idea about two days from now.

Bravo to you and congratulations on what you have achieved so far. It is no surprise that you are becoming discouraged and it's because you are doing a two person job by yourself with not a whole lot of suitable boat building equipment to assist with the build. So give yourself a break from the pressure, and maybe plan ahead to get help from someone else like your wonderful neighbor, for the bigger tasks to make it easier on yourself. You should be proud of what you have achieved so far. Well done!!

Hey Emma, you're doing well! As other's in the comments, I have also built several wooden boats with various methods. Be sure you really take your time to complete the waterproofing, finish, and everything on the hull before you flip it. It is WAY harder to work on once it's the other side up! Once you are ready to flip it, I would really recommend building a solid wooden frame to set it on while you complete the top-side, instead of just putting it straight on the trailer. Trailers move and they're hard to keep steady and level/etc. Have fun!

Proper ambient air temperature is necessary for the endothermic reaction of the polyester resins and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (the catalyst) to occur, which is how the resin hardened up. Really at least want to be in the 60°+ temps for use of FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastics), the resins.

Great work Emma! At this stage, if you haven't already got one, get yourself a small block plane, a sharpening stone and sharpening jig. You won't have to worry about cutting any angles on the edges of sheets etc. just hang em over a little bit and plane them off flush. It will make the work soooo much easier, and more accurate.

Nice work! You see, it's coming together.. Accuracy and a little grinding can give you satisfaction guaranteed. It's a bit challenging because of the nature of construction and of the size.. When you build something, consider that it will grow heavier and heavier with every piece added. The whole thing is big and will require some lifting device to turn it around. Luckily you can build yourself a pair of small gantry lifts with chainhoists for this purpose. =) It's not difficult to make. The hull doesn't weight a ton, but probably too much for 2 persons. Since you tend to go "solo" most of the time, that would be your best bet. After use you can disassemble the gantrys and reuse parts for other projects. Cheers, Emma, keep on, never give up!

You should go a bit easier on yourself about the gaps and tolerances. That epoxy you're using is incredibly strong. It's like your secret cheat code. Still doing great. Again, perfection is the enemy of good. Boats dont need to be perfectly square to float. Gaps are going to happen, an you will just fill them with epoxy an hide them with paint. That board you cut wrong will just become a seat bottom or cabnet side. As long as you moved the project forward an ended the day with as many digest as you started the day with, its a day to be proud of.

Doing great! One thing about boats Help is a Godsend due to size Just to help hold the panels in place while you fasten them To measure distances like the length of a bend etc boatbuilders use adding machine tape You can get it at places like office depot Mark one end on the tape then mark the other end Then transfer that to the board you will use You are turning into a shipwright :) You can use a compass to scribe one piece next to another

I thought maybe it might be a better idea if you take up the router and take half of each one of the plywood, the 1 on the 1 side and 1 on the other side on the edge about a 1/2 inch in then slide the plywood in over the other piece of plywood and then that would be. A lip that will contact both of them. That will help you make the bend and it you could always seal it.

Incase you need to draw to objects together Boat builders use the technique quite often A Spanish windlass is a device for tightening a rope or cable by twisting it using a stick as a lever. The rope or cable is looped around two points so that it is fixed at either end. The stick is inserted into the loop and twisted, tightening the rope and pulling the two points of the transom toward each other Not sure if you will need it at some point But, posting it incase you do One way it is used is flat bottom skiff builders they shape the 2 side panels attach them to the bow stem then they bend the panels around a center mold with the windlass get the bottom the way they want it Then, attach the bottom Yours is different But, to give you and idea

I was doing some further thinking about your build and thought of some of the cuts you might have to make. A device you might want to consider is a contour gauge or duplicator. My first learning of them was in the copying and making moldings to match existing ones. I know there are a few types and sizes . Lowe's and Home Depot have them and I'm sure there are a number on the Net.
