Honda Monkey: Escaping to the wilderness on my tiny motorcycle

  • I bought a Honda Monkey 2 years ago and have been learning to ride ever since. This week I hauled the Monkey out of the garage and took it on a little ride into the wilderness for the first time this season.
    Watch next:
    • Honda Monkey Off Road:...
    • Truck camper makeover:...
Current Project: • House Boat Build Serie...
About me: I decided to jump on an opportunity to buy a school bus for $1000. After 2.5 years of building and a couple summers doing bus life, I sold the bus and began building a tiny house boat from scratch. My hope is that with a couple years of practice building under my belt, I can do a bit better of a job this time and build something that actually floats 🤞

When the road turns to dirt, that is when the fun starts. That little Honda Monkey is great for that type of riding.

When I was your age I had an open-faced helmet. The worst is when bees or bugs smack into your mouth or up your nose. I switched to a modular (hinged) full face helmet. No more bug problem. I later had a self inflicted accident where I wound up in the guardrail. The full-face helmet saved me from head and face injuries.

Owning a bike or car doesn't have to be a "need", and you don't have to work out where it fits in your life.
Bike and car enthusiasts ride/drive for the enjoyment of it and/or enjoying your surroundings.
They're definitely more than just a "tool" or "object" that we use to commute to work or go shopping.
Enjoy your bike and the freedom of simply going for random rides

There is nothing wrong with just keeping the monkey for quickly escaping the daily grind and heading to a quiet spot for a personal picnic and some time to just be alone for a couple of hours. Also, you can still use the monkey for quick trips to the store to pick up small items instead of having to use the car. It's YOUR LIFE, Emma. Live it the way that makes you happy. 🎉 Looking forward to seeing your future adventures. Many blessings to ya! ❤😊

I had a Honda CT90 that got me all the way through college while eliminating any parking problems or being late for class. I used to park right behind the building my first class was in. One summer I took a break and set a personal record playing golf every day for a month and hauled my golf clubs on that little motorcycle.
Today, fifty years later, I just got back from a joy ride on my Honda XR150L. That bike will do everything I need it to whenever I want while getting a cazillion miles to a gallon of gas.
I can relate to your pleasure with the Monkey.

I have an old xr250 and enjoy the heck out of it out here in the Arizona desert, strictly off-road, been riding dirt bikes since the seventies and never had any desire to ride on the road, just don't trust other drivers to see me and don't really wanna go that fast I was kinda thinking maybe this girl might consider that too, if she can, transport the little Monkey too the trails that way she doesn't have to deal with the traffic. On the trails you can go as slow or as fast as you want

You're an adventure motorcyclist now, that's when you spend your weekends cruising on anything from highways to dirt roads to trails. As somebody who also stores their motorcycle in a kind of hard to access sometimes place, I recommend learning how to do a kickstand pivot. With the monkey you could probably learn in 5 minutes. It's basically when you pull the motorcycle onto it's kickstand and then effectively balance it on there and spin it around. There's lots of youtube videos about it. It saves a lot of time and headaches.

I was riding to work one day when a nearby lawnmower through a rock at my face.😮 Thank goodness I was wearing my full face helmet that day. Scared the bejeezus out of me though. Have also had a bee inside my helmet. Was lucky it flew out without stinging when I opened the visor. Might want to invest in a motorcycle jacket Emma. They have snug cuffs to keep critters out and they breathe better than denim does, not to mention padding to protect you and keep you cool on hot days. Love seeing you enjoy riding the Monkey again. Such a sweet ride.

The monkey is a pretty good little bike, but they aren't very good offroad, which is why you struggle. For the kind of riding you're doing, I'd suggest a Yamaha XT225, XT250 or a TW200. All of them are small and easy to ride, but are good on and off road. My favourite is the 225, as its lighter than the 250 and has a 6 speed gearbox so is good for riding slowly in first.

Monkey time. A bit of brain clearing.
I've been riding motorcycles since 1962. It took me awhile to answer the question "Why do I like to ride motorcycles". Some ride for a speed thrill. Some ride for economy. Etc. I ride for the journey, not the destination. I've been all over the west, from Mexico to the Arctic Ocean. All journeys of exploration. I ride secondary roads, no interstate if possible. I'm old now. I wish I had a Monkey.
Emma!! Wear some gloves. In a fall the first thing that hits the ground is your hands. I have some fancy cycle gloves but my favorite is a simple buckskin work glove.
Second is your chin. Get a chin guard on your helmet. You can get football or ski guards that can be bolted onto your helmet.
And bees. You have to deal with them. Use eye protection. I once was riding along and this prehistoric monster crawled up my glasses. On the inside! Man did he look big. Please don't sting my eye. Funny now, but then...
Yes to motorcycle camping. A sleeping bag and tarp. Some beany weenies, a can opener and a spoon. Go exploring.

Hello! Fellow monkey owner here. The monkey stock isn’t a fantastic off-road bike. It’s not that you suck off road. Those tires aren’t helping though with the sand. I think you may need to look down the modification rabbit hole. Shinko mobber tires are a huge upgrade. Not the best on road performance but tons of off road performance! It is a compromise. If you spend most of your time off-road on that bike it’s worth the switch. Also look into T. rex racing. They have an excellent bark buster kit to protect your hands and the hand controls. Standing up while riding in the dirt helps as well, two brothers makes some fantastic foot pegs that are easier to stand on than the factory ones. Those tweaks should help a lot ! Have fun!

If you are interested in motocamping and traveling, there are trail routes all over the country. There is back country discovery routes, also known as bdrs. Also there is the tat trans America trail. Some guy rides on TH-cam did the tat on a Honda trail 125. Ed march of c90 adventures did it on a Honda c90. A guy by the name of helmet head is doing an adventure around the world on a Honda monkey. Some cool stuff to check out.

1st things 1st, buy a battery tender. 2nd, country roads are the most dangerous as you expect them to be unused. Will definitely recommend a full face helmet, shield is your choice. by the way, cagers don't play chess and think 5 moves ahead. Motorcycle camping is akin to backpacking, how you pack is very important.

There's a commonly held rule among many groups. When you're going out for a short trip: pack way more food than you think you'll need in case the end of the world starts before you get home. It's also useful in case you have a flat or decide to stop somewhere overnight on a whim. I have to mention Clean socks and Underwear because my Mom is reminding me of THAT one right now! And it's very disturbing since she's been dead for quite a while now...

I own 2 Dual Sport/Adventure bikes. Personally the only reason I have for owning a motorcycle in everyday life, is for the small amount of time that I get to spend AWAY from that scenario. There's nothing better than loading the camping gear on the bike and spending a few days exploring dirt roads/trails and sleeping under the stars. If you invest in some decent offroad tires and push your skills a little, you'll find some amazing places.

Bee in Jacket! I was doing a lot of riding last year, and really enjoyed having my jacket opened for fresh air in the summer... I looked like a big balloon man on the motorcycle - windbreaker filled with fresh air, until: Oops! bzzzzzzzz... It didn't sting me, but it sure did creep me out. Same deal, in the sleeve, buzzing around at the cuff when I pulled the jacket off. So now I only drop my zipper 1 or 2 inches max. It's great that you're out enjoying the weather!

Emma, dont stop being you please its awesome tho a few pointers, first i want you to keep making videos in good health so put some armor on while riding, ive came off on a motorcycle (hit Ice) and my armour saved my hands and arse from being eaten Alive, the best armour is using your head and avoiding an accident but thats not Always possible to, so armour up gal please.
Second just keep practising, you'll build confidence are you struggling in the turns? I havent seen your previous riding videos but I get the feeling you havent got a natural counter steer yet. Dont be afriad to look up videos on advice. Always be learning, learning is growing and if you stop learning thats when youve grown old!
Keep up the good work and as a fellow multiproject monster there is a success story, your writing it right now, the key is keep going.
I believe it was will smith once said something along the lines, dont look at it as ive got to build this whole wall its too overwhelming, say im going to lay this brick as best as i possibly can and just keep going one brick at a time and before you know ot youve build the wall.
Get yourself a project buddy, help them and have them help you it will also help with motivation

I am pretty impressed. You took the battery out. I leave mine in everything an just try to remember to start it once a month. The key word is try. Thats why my tractor currently has a dead battery an will not start. Same with my truck. I dont blame ya for not wanting to be around traffic. I usually get my bike out on Sundays when everyone is either at church or still in bed. Did my first ride of the year last week. If I had those dirt roads to hit, I would be on a trail bike hitting those too. I would find some local friends to ride with though. Trail riding is always better with backup. Having a second person to help you pick your bike up, pull it out of the mud, encourage you, an to go get help when crap happens. Not just a bike thing either. If I hit the trails in my truck, I am finding another truck to go with me. Even with my built truck an a nice winch, alone I have to worry about getting stuck so I turn around before I want to, or skip roads I want to go down. With another truck, I can send it an see what happens. Way more fun.

Ahhhh. Watching Emma struggle to roll her motorcycle out of its corner makes me feel better about my own, um, "organizational" skills. Mine aren't any better than Emma's. But at least I know I'm not the only one! The struggle is real!
Getting hit in the face by a giant bug, or even a hummingbird, isn't so bad. My buddy, a Wyoming Highway Patrolman, once answered a call to help load a motorcyclist into an ambulance, after a vulture flew up and hit him straight in the face, helmetless, at interstate highway speed. Stories like that convince me to wear a full-face helmet, on the highway, at least. Little bits of gravel will convince you to do it on dirt roads too! 🤕

Picked up my Monkey 1 year ago today with 4 miles on the clock!, racked up 3500miles almost 😱, and yes I'm a sucker for dirt roads too, I have been very lucky to save laying it down a few times when wheels get stuck in ruts and to steer by accident means the bike just leans over to fall, slow riding is not only more fun, but also harder to control, so by going slow I think you will become a more competent rider with better balance than someone who learns through hooning it around! After time riding on sand it will just click into place with muscle memory and you will be quicker at saving a fall as second nature, my bike sounded really rough and dangerous the other day because I'd let the chain get soo slack...again! do not neglect your chain as you'll regret it when it fails!, you should buy a spare, I need to aswell, monkey chains are bicycle thin, you can grt beefy one's but I need to see if the cogs need to be replaced as well with upgrade, it is always best as one can shorten the life of the other.. always entertaining the monkey vids, thanks 👍

I live in the city and I absolutely don’t need a motorcycle to commute but I have two. One of them Yellow monkey and we go to the trails and camping that’s what we like the most

Proper riding gear could have prevented the stings. Gloves that cover the cuffs. No bee entry point. No stings. Simple.

I have a monkey too and it’s a lot of fun finding and exploring the side roads. Definitely try to take care of the chain. It’s not the best quality and it does get loose over time.

That monkey looks like so much fun. I'm too big for it but I still want one.

If you attach a ponton to both sides you get a water motorcycle, perfect for the floating tiny home😇

I feel for ya on the bee situation Emma. I was driving home late one night from work and all of the sudden I was getting stung like crazy and I was weaving all over the road and fortunately it was really late at night and no traffic but I was more worried about getting pulled over for a dui since I was weaving all over the place trying to kill the stupid bee or bees lol. this was back in 1998 a year I will never forget. I had a honda xr200r back in the early 2000's and I loved it and I had a blast riding it when I was able to on trails and I really miss riding it to this day.
