@Ecoonme there is no fixed syllabus for PhD . So it totally depends on your research topic whether you do it from IIM or IIT. If your nature of research does not require mathematics no one will force you to do it. So if you want to avoid mathematics choose your topic accordingly

What about social work, as the subject itself is interdisciplinary?
Then find a subject which relates to it or your research idea closely and apply in it

Check the guidelines of the University that you want to apply it . Really varies from university to university
