At 60 I bought myself a splitter. This old lady split and sold quite a few cords of wood. Now 74 I still split but have switched to using a chop saw for edger waste for my personal firewood. I have a small stove so don't need to cut/split 12" rounds...There is something about stacking wood. It's fun. I made a courtyard around my cannibal tub. All the odd waste is consumed heating it. I cut pallets in half for 2 rows wide. Cover with recycled banners, recycled portable carport tarp, even 6mil skin off a greenhouse. then a strip of used carpet for weight. A well placed rock or 2 and for an old lady it's a done deal. I'm 4 years ahead now but aiming at more before I quit. Somebody will have to take my place eventually...

Chris I've spent the last few days up at our cabin cutting old deadfall. Best job I ever had. Dog running around chasing off the cows and me dragging and cutting wood. Throw it in the back of the SXS and take it to another part of the property to dump. Even giving it most of it away because it needs to be off the ground for fire mitigation.I have several cords already for stove use. This is all aspen wood nothing else on our property.

    Pennies From Heaven Today
I scored a pick up truckload of black walnut I found on Craigslist Free. On the way home I drove down a street a block away from our place where I have heard a chain saw running for a week. My husband talked to the homeowner and I am the new owner of limb and trunk wood from a huuuuuge locust tree.. The tree service is coming back tomorrow to buck everything to 16 inches. Already starting on 2023.
Chris and the gang have fun at the show.

the other day you started to make bundles and you said you were going to give them away with full cords. great idea. I think you should attach a price to them and let less than cord purchasers buy them and that would give true value to the spiff.

1 Cord = 128 cu ft (4x4x8). Typically each cord of firewood is stacked in three rows of 16 inch logs. A face (of a) cord is one of those rows as you look at the stack from the cut side, or the "Face" of the cord. Hence, a face cord... or 1/3rd of a cord!

I live in Maine and for many seasons over the years I harvested a very large amount of standing dead wood - mostly oak - silver wood - nearly petrified on the stump - AMAZING firewood - and I sold it by the facecord
Most folks knew what that meant and were very happy someone would sell them a relatively small amount of wood
I made 50/75% more per cord by selling a smaller/drier/measured stack of wood than the going rate at a 2 cord minimum of unseasoned wood
    Small trucks and facecords 😂

    • @InTheWoodyard

Yes, but in the midwest it is standard that the pieces are 16" so then it is the same however, a face cord does not define the length so in some states you go to jail for using the 'term" face cord.

When we trained for road crash rescue, we were taught to do this with 4 x 4's underneath a vehicle to provide stability/no movement, in conjunction with a thick board on top and then an airbag on top of the pigsty to lift the vehicle.

7:37??? Really?? I feel almost violated 😎. If you stack much higher, you will have to notify the airport so the pilots can adjust their altitude accordingly.

Want to know what is a tough pill to swallow? Having to stay in a normal job when all you want to do is firewood. Or at least do firewood most of the time with going part-time on the day job to rest the body. I'll have to be creative on packaging and marketing, Ohio Wood Burner has some great ideas on that to maximize profits, to be able to quit working the day job full-time. Campfire sales are down but that gives me a chsnce to build inventory to really bust things loose when sales go up!
