- How to fix your remote control when your buttons are not working or you have to press hard to make them work.
This is a very easy fix and most of the time it's just because of dirt.
Thank you for the great tip. I used your guidelines to clean a non-responsive Verizon FIOS remote about 12 years old. Some of the buttons were very difficult to operate (I had to press very hard on them to make contact). I happened to have 70% IPA (rubbing alcohol), so I gave it a shot. Wow! The remote buttons now require feather-like pressure to operate. God bless!
So glad this helped you. They are sometimes like new from just a quick clean.
Thank you for this very clear video instruction! I've been struggling with a 'Power On/Off' Button for a couple of months. Was considering getting a new remote but didn't fancy paying out £15 for the privilege. Watched this, followed instructions and worked at first attempt. I've given you a Facebook mention as well!
Just can't imagine why some idiots would give this a 'thumbs down'.
Thank you so much. I'm glad this worked for you and thanks for the Facebook mention.
Unfortunately you always get people that will give you a thumbs down with no reason.
YEP!
I was about to go out and buy a replacement remote for my tv because of the problems listed in this post. I followed the directions to the degree and walla after following the instructions the remote is like new. Thank you well done.
Thank you so very much. I went further though. After cleaning the rubber contacts I rubbed the pencil on each one to ensure contact. Remote worked as soon as I reassembled it.
Thanks for the video, I found it incredibly useful while trying to open the remote to my Yamaha receiver. Great visual aid and narrative. Well done.
I cannot thank you enough. I was struggling with my remote buttons to turn on and off but now help of this video I manage to fixed it . God bless you 🙏
Great to hear!
Thank you. I followed the same cleaning steps and the idea worked. You are following from Dubai
Glad it helped, well done for fixing it.
Thank you so much, you've just saved me the price of a new TV ! Excellent video.
You are very welcome. I'm happy it worked for you. 👍
Works beautifully!! My remote was quite clean to begin with and I've already pulled it apart twice to clean but got no result. Didn't think of using achohol, now works like new!!
😀😀
Glad it helped 👍
Thank you! I bought a new one a few months ago and it already started going bad. This video helped me fix the original one and hopefully every other future remote.
Helpful tip with the camera bit at the end too!👍👍
I'm glad this video helped you out and you could fix both your remotes.
You inspired me to pull mine apart. Half my buttons didnt work so I'd lost lots of functions on a Panasonic HDD TV recorder /Tuner. I almost bought a new machine but.. watched this. Then I cleaned everything with WD40 Contact Cleaner. It wasn't really filthy or full of hair in there but now everything works. Cheers
Great, so glad this helped you.
Thanks. My tv remote on/off button was taking upto 10 minutes to operate. I followed your instrctions, then I remembered how someone had left it lying face down in a pool of spilt beer a couple o month ago. Works perfectly now, just needed the TLC.
I'm glad you got it working again. Well done 👍
Worked perfectly,thanks man👍
Informative, and I enjoyed watching it. Showed how it could go wrong too while reassembling.
Good video. You taught me somethign today regarding being able to see IR light through a phone camera, cheers
Great presentation. I appreciated seeing the whole thing so there is no guessing. Well done.
Thank you
This video is a great help. If you follow the instructions and do the work, you can avoid all the trouble of trying to buy a new remote control. Thank you Retro Electronic Repair!
To all of you who will buy a new TV, DVR, or whatever, because the remote doesn't work well anymore: YOU have more dollars than sense. In other words, you are stupid.
Thank you
Wish i learned this a decade ago. Thanks loads!
Thank u so much man . I did it myself with help of your video 🙏. Now my remote works perfectly fine ✔️ .
You're welcome!
Great tip. Worked a treat.
Thank you very much , my aircon remote was playing up , only the power button , i cleaned it up and gave it bit of graphite coating using the pencil method and it works like brand new
Thank you kind sir... worked perfectly 👌
I have spent two hours trying to get a Sony remote apart, there appears to be tiny screws five of them but no matter how hard I try to undo them I still can’t take it apart! I wonder whether it is worth it for so little reward!
Can you use ethanol instead of IPA? Thank you
You can just use some soapy water
Thanks for an excellent video. It addresses and offers solutions for a universal problem with older remotes that control expensive devices.
TRULY!
Ty for this video.almost bought a new one!
Thank you. I hoped it worked well for you.
Yes it was sticky and dirty but works great now after doing what u said..many thanks
Great video. Thanks.
Thank yoy very much! The only thing I would say to make it even easier: all the plastic and rubber are simpler to clean just putting them in a bit of handwarm water with some washingup liquid, and than take the toothbrush. Saves alot of the rubbing.
Yes I would usually do that but easier to just show how to clean it where I was rather than moving the camera equipment.
Good information
Thank you so much!!! Awesome video!
You are welcome.
What type tube lotion /cream and liquid lotion used ?
Please reply immediately, I Have 3 TV remotes which are damaged.
I use IPA 99.9% alcohol. Use could also just use a damp cloth, just make sure it's completely dry after.
Thank you so much it worked!
I'm glad it helped you.
Cheers, from Toronto.
Thanks for watching!
I can 100% confirm that this method works immediately but to be sure, you'll need to see your remote performance a few hours after cleaning. If it doesn't work for you then it means you may have circuitry damage.
NOTE - you can use 76.9-81% alcohol rub (the same one you may have purchased during this time of pandemic) BUT make sure you, 1) Use a cue tip for the rubbing on the circuit board. 2) Get a tissue and slightly squeeze the tip to reduce the amount of alcohol that you may have sprayed on or dipped into. 3) GENTLY rub over all the circuitry EXCLUDING the microchips. For additional safety, avoid rubbing over any holes on the board. When you have done that and you think it's dry, grab an ERASER, make sure the heads of it is clean and then GENTLY rub over all the connecting bridges to make sure it's clean. All other parts that need to be clean, just are sure to follow this video. Ensure everything is bone dry before putting the remote back together.
Thank you,, Fixit for Reselling.
I've tried doing most of this on a Humax RM 10331. When I put it back together, the light next to the power button just flashes on and off. I could get a new remote, but it is just more landfill. I think it is still producing the signal. I wonder about using too much force on the circuit board as it could mean something is not connected afterwards.
Anyway, nice video.

Disassemble
Clean everything with alcohol
Assemble
20 minutes saved. You’re welcome
You'll be surprised at how many people don't know that. Read through the comments and see how many people have thanked me for saving their remotes.
20 minutes well worth it. You're welcome.
@@RetroElectronicRepair cool. The rest will save 20 minutes.
I took the remote apart and cleaned it with alcohol dried it off reassembled it after discovering something that must have been a spill and it works perfectly.

I'm glad it worked for you.
Was that normal alcohol like brandy.🐱🐹
Worked on mine, i nad grease on The most used buttons. Thx for help❤
That's great, I'm happy it was easy for you and you got it working again. Thank you for watching a commenting.
what about the contracts on the tv, could it be the problem if remote is new
thanks brother
Thanks
You are welcome, I'm glad it help you.
Where did you buy your IPA from please?
From Amazon. Just search for Hexeal IPA
4:20 you cleaned one part then brushed off dirt (hair) from other one on top of them!! (at least all of them cleaned, thats more important)
What’s a smudger?
It's called a spudger. It's just a name for a prying tool.
Had to drop a like. It worked.
Thank you. Glad this worked for you. 👍
Best way to split the case open is to use a butter knife. Believe me, I've tried other ways.
Thank you for this. I was about ready to break mine...not like it was working any way.
I have a 13 inch old tv that I bought from ebay for retro games. In order to go to av I need to press the game button on the remote. Yesterday I pressed it on the remote and it didn't work. I think the actual connecter part is broken and help
It could be the carbon has worn off the button. You could try sticking a tiny bit of tin foil on the button to see if that works. If it's the contact or traces on the board that will be a bit harder to fix but not impossible.
@@RetroElectronicRepair thanks for your advice, but I found a universal remote and I got to the game input
It Worked! Thanks.
Glad it helped you. 👍
What if the infrared signal is responsive (blinking) when i point it to my phones camera, but when i point to the amp its not working..what could be the issue?
Btw its my integrated amplifier remote. The volume down button not working
I have no idea why that wouldn't be working if you can see the infrared flashing, as that is sending the signal. Sorry I can't help you with that one.
I got a 20.1 ir remote that several buttons don't work. I opened up twice ,cleaned thoroughly, new batteries. Same problem, a few buttons not working, is it time to replace that remote ?
The carbon on the buttons could of worn out. Try gluing a tiny bit of tin foil on those buttons and see if that works.
@@RetroElectronicRepair thanks my man , i will give it a shot, ill try it, ain't got nothing to lose
Cheers!
You're welcome.
Yaaaaaaay🎉❤ It Verks!!!!!!
Nice one 👍
where did you get the "smudger"?
It came with a mobile phone screen that I bought to replace an old one. Think you can just buy some cheap ones on Amazon. Try searching mobile screen replacement tools.
@@RetroElectronicRepair Thanks

Good video .. you need to clean your keyboard next. :)
Serious question, can I use vodka if that is the only alcohol I have?
Simple answer, No.
@@RetroElectronicRepair I cleaned mine using rubbing alcohol and now it works again. Mine was dirtier than yours and had a lot of dog hair under the cover. Thanks
Yes rubbing alcohol is perfectly fine to use too. It's amazing what you can find inside remotes 😂
Wanted to play Zelda on my 10+ yo tv, being at least a couple years since the remote stopped working
Only thing that would work was my ex's Wii u game pad (universal remote don't work)
Took me 5 minutes to do with some random alcohol i have in the bathroom
Nice vidéo !
Thank you, I'm glad it helped. 👍
my IR just stays on. Any clue for me ? thanks.
There must be something shorting on the board. Make sure no buttons are stuck down and the board is clean. Not much else I can suggest without seeing it myself. Hope this helps.
U r unable to open rote how can I repair it
If you can't open it you can't repair it. Some companies glue things close so its destructive to take them apart. But most remotes are just clipped together but can be a pain to get apart.
Hey guys I cleaned it without the alcohol with immediate results. The only button that doesn’t work is the volume up button ?
It could be that the carbon has worn off the back of the rubber button. Try sticking a tiny piece of tinfoil to the back of that button and see if it works again.
.....No luck.. didn't use it for 10 years...Panasonic Remote N2QAGB000002, I just sprayed some Rubbing Alcohol and later sprayed and washed the Circuit board with Rubbing alcohol and Contact Cleaner. ONLY the Power button on the Remote is working. What could be wrong?
It could be the carbon on the back of the buttons have worn out, which you could try sicking a tiny bit of tin foil to the back of the buttons to see if that works. Or it could be that there is some corrosion on the board if it has got damp at all. Maybe there are some rusted or broken traces on the board. Without seeing it it's hard to say what is wrong.
No luck.. didn't use it for 10 years...Panasonic Remote N2QAGB000002, as difficult to open can I just spray some Rubbing Alcohol and later spray Contact Cleaner on the Top?
End of video: Damn, I threw this tv out three years ago!
My remote had a few buttons that didn’t work so I cleaned it using alcohol and they worked but just for one day.
It could be the carbon on the bottom of the button that's worn out. Trying sticking a tiny piece of tinfoil to the bottom of the button.
What else can you clean it with. I don't want to pay seven pound when I am only using it once.🐱🐹
You can mix it with water and a drop of vegetable oil and use it as a hand sanitizer. You can get smaller bottles or use rubbing alcohol. You could also use WD-40 on a cotton bud but wipe it off with a dry cloth after as it leaves a residue.
@@RetroElectronicRepair Thanks so much for your time. 🐱 🐹
You are welcome.
@@RetroElectronicRepair I have WD 40 I have a go . THANKS AGAIN.🐱🐹
Soapy water. IPA can remove the carbon tracing. Any buttons that still dont work can use aluminum foil or wire stuck the the rubber pads to make them conductive.
Could u use vodka.
No, IPA is 99.9% alcohol, it doesn't conduct electricity and will evaporate to nothing.
@@RetroElectronicRepair thanx for replying 👍
You just cleaned it! Not repair at all!!!
It wasn't working properly and now it is. So it has been repaired!
@@RetroElectronicRepair exactly, unfortunately society has become so technically "advanced" that they forget that repair means re-pair re-connect re-ling etc by whatever means
Of course he 'fixed it'. Worked for mine too and saved me about £15-£18 for a new one.
Not much going on in your life is there?
@@arfurfoxhaike - not much in yours either! For somebody with a 'Dove of Peace' symbol for an avatar, that's not a very pleasant reply.
Come on, slide a tapered tool/ screwdriver along the side.........bingo, you're in. Much better than the mess you made
