I remember doing Tekki under Bridal Veil Falls in Yosemite. So cool with the mist around me.

Another training I do. Is to do Tekki standing on a 10 foot 2x4. You really have to keep YOYR balance as you go through the Katas.

Excellent demonstration of tekki kata 1,2 and 3. But I am not that convinced on the bunkai or oyo. The analysis is to imaginative for my understanding. 🥋🙌👏✌️Oss!

I have a question. In the cross over lifting the knee up in Tekki Kata’s. Is it just lifting the knee. Or is it a front kick to the attacker attacking from the front. Kanazawa really lifts that leg high. I do front kicks while in Kibadach, while either blocking or striking with any hand technique. Was a excersize my Sensei would have us do, 3 punch’s 1 Jodan and two Chadian with a front snap kick in Kibadach. Any thought?

There is no mae geri in any of the tekki versions. Depending on the lineage the kicks that are taught are stomping outward, stomping inward, thrust side kick, snap side kick, knee strike, and sweep (wave returning kick). The wave returning can also be used defensively to take your leg out of the way of low kick, and the knee lift can be used to block strikes to your belly and pelvis or check kicks.

that's a good question, the answer could be whatever your instructor wants it to be. In Funakoshi's 'Karate Do Kyohan' book, which is the one he presented to the Japanese Emperor in 1935 he says it is simply a knee rise. In Nakayama's Best Karate vol 5 it doesn't actually specify, but the photos show either a very clear knee strike with the heel tucked back, as well as some images showing a high knee but with foot extended slightly - like you see in Kanazawa's videos. I think it should be knee strike but really I guess it doesn't matter. Gichen was all for adapting kata - he did it and expected it to be further adapted in the future as he writes in his books.

We practice a lot doing front snap kick in Kibadach. As for bunkai any kick will work if needed. Rather a side snap, thrust,. I train individual stance training with all the kicks. But thanks for the info. Love Shotokan.

Back to that question. I do practice front kick in HorseStance with 3 reverse punch. 1 Jodan and two Chudan. But then again Kata is basically a guide to Bunkai. And Bunkai. Any technique can be used. I break down Kata to see other defensive and offensive techniques.
