I was a small child shopping with my mum. This song came over the speaker in the mall and my mother said I started dancing. Fast forward to teenage years I ice skated to this song in a competition. I was insistent on this song. Now at 51, this song still stops me in my tracks!
The Moody Blues are my father's favorite band of all time. Back in the 70s (I think) he went to see them live but he was so far in the back he could not see the stage. So a number of years ago about '96 or '97, I saved up most of my money working part time at McDonald's and bought tickets for the Moodies when they came to town (without my dad knowing) for Fathers Day. We ended up being within spitting distance of the stage. In this concert they had the full orchestra. I think it was the best concert he had ever been to, he still has the souvenirs of that day. We may not see eye to eye on a lot of things, be we will always have that day

The part where the full London Symphony goes into the Kingdom, before Late Lament, always gives me chills. As some young 20 year old's said, who just heard this song for the first time, "I want this song played as I'm dying, and about to take the next step into the Kingdom."

And it has a lot of classical music influence in it cuz I think Justin Hayward said that he was influenced by Bach Mozart or Beethoven I can't remember

I saw the Moody Blues in Austin Texas. A dance student dance ballet to this and the crowd graciously gave her the space to do so during the concert. I am sure that is still a magical moment to her all these years later. It seems to be for me too, since I remember it still.

The drummer Graeme Edge reads his poem at the end. Mike Pinder used a Mellotron for the orchestral parts (piano with tape loops) but they also played with local US community orchestras. Sadly the Moodies stopped touring last year. Ray Thomas the flautist died 2 years ago and Graeme retired last year to FL. Justin the lead guitarist and John Lodge the bass guitarist both do solo tours now and music cruises with other famous bands. Mike left the band several years ago and lives in CA where he helps manage his sons’ musical careers. I collect all the music and memorabilia of the Moodies worldwide (working on a book) and have met them several times. They are the most gracious and giving musicians you’ll ever meet. I recommend listening to their core 7 albums. Other singles would be Tuesday Afternoon (check out the visa commercial on TH-cam), Question, Wildest Dreams, I’m Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band and I Know You’re Out There Somewhere. 🇬🇧🎶❤️

A wonderful song for a cool, cloudy afternoon of reflection. I had a muntz 4-track in my 65 GTO, and cruised around with this on when I was alone. I was 18 in 67. Then Zepllin came along, in 69 followed by Pink Floyd. Oh my! What an era for music!

Love that you did the whole song with the poem which was written by their talented drummer! The beginning of the album starts with a similar 'concept' with another poem. The whole album is a wonderful experience to listen to all the way through. And listening to the radio, similar to what your mom said I thought of knights with the visuals and music in the song. Because they are known for singing about fairy tale scapes and consciousness :) I think of Star Trek or the Twilight Zone with the sound of twinkling stars. It was all a dream

The album "Days of Furture Past" covers the days of a week, ending with this one, it could also be a metaphor for a life, from start to end. I agree with those that say listen to the whole album, in order, to get the best and a true perspective of the concept of the album, then make up your own mind what it's about. I was 14 when this came out and I haven't stopped listening and loving this album.
They way they pass the lead roles was fantastic, you just dont see it much in modern music. Between Ray, Justin, John, Mike, and Graham, it was basically a band of 5 front-men and the music showed. A true collaboration of great minds.

The MB have such an extensive catalog, and they were in a class all their own...Justin's voice, I always felt, was unbelievably under-rated; but, then again, so was his guitar playing..He was/is a phenomenal guitarist!..One of the most creative bands of it's time...Mom, have you ever heard the album Justin, and bassist John Lodge did w/o the band...It's simply, but aptly titled "Blue Jays" and was recorded in '75...It's as good as anything they did with the MB...It has all the same elements of a MB album, but there is something about it that I think is even better...For a long time that was sacrilege to say to the die-hard MB fan, but over the years has come to be as respected...If you like this you will LOVE that album...Guaranteed!...Thanks for the post!.....BTW, I love the long version of this song!...Way beyond what anyone else was doing, at the time.

All of the "synthesized" strings, horns, and other sounds were created using a mellotron. Like mom says, how they did things back then. Search videos of Mike Pinder, the keyboard player, for a first-hand explanation.

Robert Longwill Certainly Graeme Edge has done the honors of reciting it during live performances after Ray Thomas left; I think Edge did it after Pinder left (we should check out the concert videos, because Thomas could have done it, too.) Pinder's voice has more "bass" than Thomas' (Compare with Thomas' voice on at the start of "On the Threshold of a Dream" - it's "sharper" than Pinder's. Edge's voice is closer to Pinder's, but even his voice is not as resonant down low as Pinder's. Of course, does it matter in the end? I just pointed out that it wasn't Thomas, but it would have sounded good if any off then did it, it's the words that are important.

I got to see them almost thirty years ago with my dad, we had a great time!! Too bad that the Moody Blues has diminished to a mere trio.

@@RobertKekuna both of you I'm not sure if you're right or wrong on who narrates the poetry. It sounds like Graham Edge to me I've heard him speak and I've heard Mike Pinder speak this sounds more like Graham
Robert Longwill Certainly Graeme Edge has done the honors of reciting it during live performances after Ray Thomas left; I think Edge did it after Pinder left (we should check out the concert videos, because Thomas could have done it, too.) Pinder's voice has more "bass" than Thomas' (Compare with Thomas' voice on at the start of "On the Threshold of a Dream" - it's "sharper" than Pinder's. Edge's voice is closer to Pinder's, but even his voice is not as resonant down low as Pinder's. Of course, does it matter in the end? I just pointed out that it wasn't Thomas, but it would have sounded good if any off then did it, it's the words that are important.
@@RobertKekuna I tend to agree. I went online last night I think it was, and I think it actually was Mike Pinder who did the final narration. But it does sound a little like Graeme Edge regardless they're my favorite band and that is one hell of a song it will be listened to 100 years hence you. Cheers to you
