+Jonas Hulse Those are metal squares that are designed to look like circles until pressure is released from a point. Basically, it is a prop doing what it was made to do.
It was to add an extra layer of confusion there was someone who added confusion by reciting a poem and it fooled penn and teller in the end with him also doing a couple other distractions as he went along
''Can someone in the audience trade a 1$ bill with me? Thank you. Now Penn & Teller can you please sign it? Thanks you. Ladies and gentlemen, in this trick I have performed, I have magically switched a counterfeit 1$ bill for 50$ from ebay.''
+evilkk3029 I see :P thx for the info. Although I don't understand what all the ''.......''s are for, it's not like if I was seriously debunking the trick or something, why are you being so awkward?
Look at 5:36-5:44 when Blake is trying to misdirect attention, Teller is staring straight at his hands the entire time, watching the trick happen. Then Teller turns and smiles at Penn, because he knows he wasn't fooled.
well im writing this as im watching, and at 1:50 when he "borrows" the $1 bill from the audience member he swaps the bills and he just hands the guy back his own dollar bill that he was originally trying to volunteer for the trick. So the magician pulled out his dollar and then pretended to get a totally random bill, but in the end he used his own bill and gave the audience member his own money right back to him. idk if that necessarily does much for the trick since i only just started watching, but im assuming thats an important part of the trick. You can see Teller leaning out of his chair trying to see the move, since the magician does a good job of blocking their view of his swap
+Bbfishman yeah i noticed that right away too. his bill looked brand new. the black dude bill had some wear & he did a poor job of false swapping them.
You do realize this man can do that with any bill. This is a competition all of the people on here use red herrings like that to try and trick Penn And Teller
My theory: He made a small tear in it at 4:17. I think you can actually hear the rip a bit at 4:18. Then at 4:23 when the camera zooms in, you can see he starts to hold the bill very carefully as if its torn, not to reveal the illusion. Then he slips the bill inside the other carefully at 4:24. And here's where the madness comes in. I think that he has some sort of really fast drying, really clear glue/or tape stuck on his fingers and he is pressing it on the bill to put it back together. But it's just a theory. A magic theory.
I think it's a prop that has two configurations; one as a circle, another as a square. Notice how the the flat of the band changes orientation from one configuration to another. By twisting the band, it switches into the square configuration, like when rolling a rubber band.
so basically, the only reason they didn't get fooled is because he showed them at other shows... this is why a magician never reveals his secrets. they basically said he did the trick very well, and the only reason they weren't fooled is because he already showed them the trick.
Yup, he showed the trick, but he didn't know that Penn and Teller was an audience before. He said at 7:25. If he would have known they saw it, he would approach the magic differently.
Yeah. He said he's held on to that trick in particular for himself, but sadly that wasn't enough when it uses a lot of the same moves as his others, and he's shared those with Penn & Teller, and others. I'm sure he's happy with the exposure the show gives him.
knpstrr nope. Like if you had a tear in your furniture, and you had a seamstress repair it. If they did a good job, you wouldn't be able to find where the tear was. Even though you know it was there and you know how they fixed it, you just can't find the seems.
+knpstrr The thing about the show is you have to fool Penn and Teller. If they know how he did it, he did not fool them. Now, they could say that for each person that goes up there "Ah yes we know how you did it" but the talk they have with the guests is for them to confirm they know how the trick was done.
SO awesome to see you on this show. We worked super briefly together at Ping Pong Productions in the edit bay for a day or two. Told my wife that I was working with this crazy magician kid who was the real talent behind the scenes...glad to get to show her who I was talking about!
+Jordan Copeland you can clearly see him doing it lol... check at 2:03 that he put the bill from the guy between his middle and ring finger (he started to spread the finger while going to get the bill). Then with the thumb of the left hand you can see him swiping the bill he always had to his left hand and pretend it's the guy's one.
its a smart misdirect. Making them think he is using a random persons bill so that it isnt a "prop bill" that way he is able to have the seam set up perfectly while making them think he had done it right in front of them.
I'm not a budding magician or anything but from what I have observed watching this video multiple times which can slightly explain how he might've done it is: 1. Blake never exchanges the bill with Del Marlow (Yeah that's his real name, cool right?) which is pretty easy to spot. 2. At 5:20 or so Blake starts his little misdirection talking about federal laws and shit, that's when you start observing his hands and Teller's eyes, at precisely 5:39, Blake manages to tear one ring, slide the other and glue it (or whatever). While Penn's busy speaking for Teller, Teller spots the trick ignoring the misdirection and tells Penn right away and that's when Blake knows he's busted but he still puts up a great show for the rest of us. Great Job Blake, you're truly inspiring.
It's my opinion that the best magic tricks are those that make people go "Woooah" in some form or other. He got that reaction. And I enjoyed the trick. Of course it's impossible to make "whole" paper pass through itself to form a perfect ring, but like P&T said: He did it so well, with so much skill, that you can *watch* him do it and still fail to see it. This is a win in my book.
He makes a tear in one of the squares and covers it up with his hand the first time, as you can see him holding it very carefully around 4:24. At 4:44, you can see that he is still covering up the same place the tear was made (bottom left of the top "square"). The second time he links them, he uses some kind of glue or sealant that takes a while to dry. This is why he holds on the bills very tightly while stalling for time by asking Teller to accept responsibility, which takes around 30 seconds. By the time he finally hands Teller the bill, it's already been glued/sealed back together, so the seam is invisible.
"Because when you need to do the dirty work, we're staring at your hands." -- 5:36 "He does it so well that we can't see the seems but we saw the seems being made." -- We can't see where you glued it, but we saw you when you glued it. Great trick ♥
This wasn't really fair! If you didn't show P&T your prior methods, they would have been fooled. I'm blown away, too, that it ends clean, with a signed bill that can be examined, after all is said and done.
misdirection he din't switch the bill from the guy in the audience he actually gave him back his bill... slight of hand watch closely... ooohh for the trick he used his own fake bill
is this actually what happened, it actually does look like the man just recieved his own crumpled bill back, I suppose the magician thought the crowd person would give them a clean crip bill out of courtesy but nope
No that's not how it works. You notice Penn says "We don't have the hands and we don't have the FINGERNAILS" to create a paper version of the linking rings. It's the same bill, he just took one of the and cut a special seam with his finger nail that overlays and locks itself into place. The type of paper dollar bills use is woven so when it is cut thinly and at a jagged angle it can be "relock" at a seam so that you can pull on it with minor to moderate force that if it were to come apart you would think you had torn it. Brilliant and original.
What happens... well putting it shortly, It's a rigged marker. The marker has a certain glue, the seam that was cut was in the middle of one of the signatures. He then spreads the thin layer of glue from the signature over the rest of the seam which takes place at 5:34 when Teller nods his head and then looks at Penn with that look. That look signals Penn and let's him know that Teller has figured it out.
Not really sure why so many people are fixated on him not swapping the bills. That's just one element of the trick. Even with his own note, he still has to do something with 'seams' as Penn and Teller point out, right in front of their eyes, where they are unable to see him do it or feel the seams on the note afterwards.
I went to school with Blake, he was always into magic and performing for others. Great job on the trick and keep up the great work. Glad to see you finally are able to take your love of magic to the next level. Congrats bud!
Chaotic Plays yeh I saw that it was obvious as his bill was straight and the mans bill was crumpled yeh he still had a straight one after the swap plus the guy took the bill from him and crumpled it in his hand so we couldn't we that it was the same one
The bill swap in the audience was switched in his hands and he gives the man back his same dollar. The bill that teller rips is a normal bill. The bill that the magician rips is a rigged bill. The bill has a precise cut in a spot that would end up being the corner of his final ripped bill, he hides that cut corner with his fingers the whole time. When he connects the 2 bills he simply slides the other bill through the cut in the corner. The "welding" of the rigged bill is done in his hands after the final interlocking. I'm not exactly sure how that was done but maybe some type of glue.
Yea i was thinking something like that. I was actually thinking maybe glue stick glue, i think i remember it made pretty seamless edges with paper. I almost think he deserved to win because they couldn't find the seam. It's kinda like they said "we don't know how you did it but we know its a trick because you're on this show so you're busted". BTW thanks lol
His special paper money that seals edges is used. He didn't really use the bill from the audience man; to use his own special paper money he switched the bill on min 2:03
He should've gotten that trophy! Not seeing the seam bc of his skill is the same as not seeing the sleight of hand they know is occurring in other tricks, and they've given trophies for that! Also, this guy is SUPER cute lol
Yes! Watching at least a hundred of foolers in past few days (rabbit hole, don't ask), and seeing a handful of cheap tricks that accidentally fooled them, this young man deserves the trophy more.
Greg Francuz teller saw him put them together at 5:23. They were not fooled, like his act, the sleight of hand has already happened, he just talks for a bit to create the skit. They were impressed with how smooth he was
I think you have to have a certain amount of charisma to gain the audiences respect as a magician and you did. And as for the trick, fantastic Blake. You deserved to go to Vegas...sorry you didn't fool them man.
When the 2 halves were originally made, he ripped a slit in his half, and beautifully keeps it hidden at all times. At 5:35, he puts some adhesive on the bill to close the slit. The bill is likely fake and made out of some special material that can reattach seamlessly when combined with a special adhesive
This guy is by far a better magician than most foolers on this show and come on you didn't know how he did it so good just how he did it is like saying I don't know how a professional futbol player is so good but I know he play with his feet! Or that's what I got from their little conversation....
I genuinely thought Steve-O was on fool us due to the voice. It's crazy how similar they sound. The trick was well worth the watch too, I loved his spin on classics.
his right hand is covering up a tear through the ring, at 5:03 he slides the bill back through the tear, you can see it is then just resting inside the ring before he puts it on tellers finger.
Awesome piece of magic Blake. You Fooled me for sure! If you haven't already done so, I hope you release this to the magic community. Thumbs UP for sure!
Vogt pulls out a perfectly smooth bill, the audience guy pulls out a folded, crinkled one. Vogt then goes back to the stage with a perfectly smooth one again. Yeah.
+Keenan Sears I just went back and watched, and I noticed that Blake gives the guy the same dollar bill back to him. Blake puts the smooth bill on top of the wrinkled one then pulls the smooth one away in his left hand, folds the wrinkled up and hands it back to the dude.
FYI, it is not illegal to destroy money. It IS illegal to alter money with the intention of passing it off t a different value, like trying to alter a $5 bill to pass as a $50. If destroying money were illegal, how would they have those penny press machines practically everywhere?
the trick is in the bill. custom bill where there's a slit/cut not perpendicular like you would ripping or using scissors. but parallel to the bill, basically splitting the sheet in half. his hand maneuvers join the halves together into a solid sheet thickness and thus Penn and teller can't even scratch out the split in the bill
same bill. while he was talking, why did he put both bills in the same hand (at 2:03 in) then give the audience member back a bill. so...trick bill. if he showed the serial number, or another aspect of the bill, that he took out of his wallet, then when he got back on stage, showed that not only the one he had in his hand had a different serial number or what ever, but also had camera zoom in on the one the audience members had, showing that the one the audience member had was the one he was originally holding on stage from his wallet, then maybe you got a convincing trick.
+MattMexor Penn implies and it could be done that he is simply a small seem in the bill he is holding during the trick. Some sort of adhesive is then used to mend that 'seam' and make it appear whole. The wizardry is in how effectively the guy does it. What makes the bill special is simply the way he manipulates it.
My only issue with that claim is objectively: we have no reason to necessarily assume the bill was special. P&T more than likely would be able to tell and would have called that out. All of this is basically going on the premise of: I presume he used a modified bill, therefore I will contort the evidence to fit my predetermined hypothesis. No big deal, it's just really we can't say. It's an assumption that it is.
A little late, but; you still kept up with it by letting them keep the trick! Good stuff, hope to see you on there again (if you haven't already). Respect goes a long way here, it seems.
he fooled me when he made the circles into squares

Aaaaaaaaaaaand cut!
this is why Penn said something about fingernails...because he used his fingernail to cut the bill
But if you can examine it after, it'd be pretty obvious if there was tape on it
Its not tape for sure. It must be some kind of glue.
This has become my favorite version of this classic piece of magic. So organic and clean. Good job Blake, hope to jam with you on some ideas soon!
You're all discussing the dollar bill trick and I'm here still trying to know how the rings became squares!

its a smart misdirect. Making them think he is using a random persons bill so that it isnt a "prop bill" that way he is able to have the seam set up perfectly while making them think he had done it right in front of them.
I'm not a budding magician or anything but from what I have observed watching this video multiple times which can slightly explain how he might've done it is:

This is a win in my book.
Yup. Just pure raw talent. Talent taken so far, you can't distinguish it from magic. That's extremely impressive and entertaining.
"Because when you need to do the dirty work, we're staring at your hands." -- 5:36
"He does it so well that we can't see the seems but we saw the seems being made." -- We can't see where you glued it, but we saw you when you glued it.

Seems like in later seasons this would have earned a trophy, maybe I'm wrong. Great skill, great act.
2:51 "More unique" that's magic right there.
"You guys don't seem into it" funniest thing a magicians ever said
Didn't know Stev-o has a twin... guess his whole family is bizarre.
Just wow!
Good looking dude, sharply dressed and great confidence! That is a winner, fantastic!
Loveee this guy!!!! :))) ....0he has such a good soul!....mBlessings all the way from Monterrey, Mx!
Fun fact Blake. Your dad Charles and I met in Indiana and he told me to check you out. Glad I did.
Wait, so Penn saw how he did it but can’t figure out how to undo it? Sounds like Blake fooled them to me.
I've bought a few of Blakes tricks and have yet to be disappointed. this one looks amazing
That guy is always there.
2:20 "he accepts responsibility" I don't think he got what the magician was asking him to day LOL
LOL and then he answered: "Thank you so much sir i appreciate it" so Blake Vogt accepts his responsibility hahaha
You fooled them. P&T are inconsistent with the award. You should have received the trophy.
Greg Francuz teller saw him put them together at 5:23. They were not fooled, like his act, the sleight of hand has already happened, he just talks for a bit to create the skit. They were impressed with how smooth he was
JESUS christ the audio in this video!
You kinda sound like Steve-O! Awesome trick :)
Literally went to the comments just to see if anyone else noticed that hahaha
It's slowed down quite a bit, which helps as well. :P
Chevy Yeah Dude!!!
This guy is by far a better magician than most foolers on this show and come on you didn't know how he did it so good just how he did it is like saying I don't know how a professional futbol player is so good but I know he play with his feet! Or that's what I got from their little conversation....
Blake, you deserved to have fooled them.
Amazing hands.
Excellent job Blake. As a fellow magician a loved watching your creative version of a classic. Very entertaining.
Thank you first minute of the video.... i now no when the flash is back on :D
I now know. Not I now no.
+Peter Blackham HAHHAHAAHHAH!!!!! comedy gold
Wonderful trick and great presentation. I just want to keep watching it I couldn't care less about how he does it.
Didn't actually switch the bills at the start
even magicians bow down to you, the inventor of tricks for magicians.
It's great to see an original trick !
been following you since Regeneration, still do support you !!!
When did Steve-O start doing magic?
Duuuudeeee.... righhhhtttt...
This is probably one of the best Didn't Fool Us
What in the hell is going on with the audio video? That fooled me
+Insomniac it's 2016 just change the speed to 1.5.
At first he's talking in my right ear, then my left, vise versa, it fooled me too
Awesome piece of magic Blake.
Yeah.
+Keenan Sears Yup, saw the same xD Its quit clear he swapped them
+Keenan Sears I just went back and watched, and I noticed that Blake gives the guy the same dollar bill back to him. Blake puts the smooth bill on top of the wrinkled one then pulls the smooth one away in his left hand, folds the wrinkled up and hands it back to the dude.
+smooze419 Yes I noticed that right away. It was his only chance to do "the dirty work" Penn was talking about.
Over 1 million views! Congrats!
amazing
That was a brilliant piece of work.
FYI, it is not illegal to destroy money. It IS illegal to alter money with the intention of passing it off t a different value, like trying to alter a $5 bill to pass as a $50. If destroying money were illegal, how would they have those penny press machines practically everywhere?
penny's don't fall under that law
+Marcos Valencia pennys
+Marcos Valencia pennies
Emers Lochingvyrr wow I'm dumb lol
+Marcos Valencia Then why are there also quarter press machines?
Simply amazing! Love the style!
Guys remember The Flash is on Tuesday October 6
That was really excellent magic and wonderful showmanship.
This guy sounds like Steve-O if he had a Orchiectomy
Comes out with rings in hands.
"I see none of you are into this"
Does exact same trick with dollar bills instead and blows minds.
don't worry you already fool them on wizard wars ;)
the trick is in the bill. custom bill where there's a slit/cut not perpendicular like you would ripping or using scissors. but parallel to the bill, basically splitting the sheet in half. his hand maneuvers join the halves together into a solid sheet thickness and thus Penn and teller can't even scratch out the split in the bill
Boi isn't he on AGT right now?
yup
same bill. while he was talking, why did he put both bills in the same hand (at 2:03 in) then give the audience member back a bill. so...trick bill. if he showed the serial number, or another aspect of the bill, that he took out of his wallet, then when he got back on stage, showed that not only the one he had in his hand had a different serial number or what ever, but also had camera zoom in on the one the audience members had, showing that the one the audience member had was the one he was originally holding on stage from his wallet, then maybe you got a convincing trick.
He never switches the bill
"HE WOULD FOOL ANYONE IN THE WORLD!!" I love how defensive he got for the kid, haha!
Milo Oblong all grown up.
A little late, but; you still kept up with it by letting them keep the trick! Good stuff, hope to see you on there again (if you haven't already). Respect goes a long way here, it seems.
Not to trying to be mean but his voice is very unpleasant to listen to.
I think its just the quality of the video. johanthans voice is messed up too.
It's both. His voice is a little annoying and so is the audio
+Hunter Jensen it reminds me of Steve-O
+Anonymous Fapper true bro. It's fucking magic that Steve-O is still alive tbh
Really? I actually like his voice. He comes across as really genuine and it's easy to maintain interest
Amazing work, Blake!!!
He swapped the bills
The guy had a crumpled bill and the magic guy had a non folded one
he had a non folded one when he got back on stage
it literally has no effect on the trick
still a great act that pays homage to the classic linking rings trick
Did anyone actually watch the flash?
Every week when it's on
WhatAreYouBuyen yeah lmao
I did, all 4 seasons and waiting for the 5th season around the corner (50days from now)
Great job man I enjoyed ur performance and most magicians don't have the nerve to let someone watch them that closely
nooo srsly What is this shit at 05:05 --' too easy
Wow, great explanation.
Beautiful trick, nice performance - well done!!
+blake vogt
Listen to me
Do this performance on the AGT finals
I guarantee that you will win the show
Hmm
Totally awesome. Much respect for this young man. I think his picture is in the dictionary under "hardworking".
