dihydrogen monoxide inhalation is actually a leading cause of death for individuals under the age of 19, according to the CDC. Everyone should watch out about the stuff, and take proper precautions.
Me: I've been putting out a lot of long videos lately I'll just make a quick 3-4 minute video. Me 3 days later: well 17 minutes is shorter than the last couple...
This is what I watch this series for- colorful liquids, colorful liquids turning into other colorful liquids, Cody explaining enough to be interesting without explaining so much that it's not boring, and precious metals.
*Drinks cyanide* Delicius *Does math* I am using gloves for this you dont want to get any of this math on your hands its some prety nasty stuff. That's why we love Cody so much!
thanks you so so much cody, ever since you've made these I've started gold and silver refining of my own and it is an absolutely amazing set of chemistry. again thank you
I honestly just come here because I love Cody’s personality (And the chemistry). He’s really nice and smart. He’s a really interesting person to watch because he knows what he’s talking about. He’s a really cool guy. Keep up the great work.
The electrochemical series makes me wonder. If your electrolyte is good and the voltage drop is due only to the redox of the metals, could you carefully adjust the voltage to selectively remove each metal in series?
Tech Ingredients - I love your channel!! What you just proposed might be an interesting little video series idea of experimenting with variety of voltage and current strengths and with different alloys! You guys would do it sooo well too!! Your DIY working w/ epoxy video changed the way I work with adhesives btw!! Like many lightbulbs went off at the same time! Cheers
I don't know you, koosh, but maybe you could stand to be a little bit more of a "dork." At least, you should have been when you were in the second grade. That's when they taught the difference between "your" and "you're." :)
Thermophile freeloaders like you are the reason economies are as crappy as they're. You don't buy solder for it's silver content, just like you don't buy McDonald's for it's nutritious content.
Thermophile he didn't do the complete test he had some problems so therefore it wasn't a perfect test if he does it again with great variables perhaps he'll get a better percentage closer to there's. Can't complain when you don't do something 100% properly although I am with you. FREE solder!
I do admire your passion for what you do. You often use materials where the price far exceeds the sales value of the end product and in spite of that, you still do the experiments with enthusiasm for your viewers for the sake of education :)
Pro Tip: When pouring from a pan or something with funky corners(even a beaker) you can use a glass rod or something to direct the flow of fluids from the beaker(or pan) into your collection vessel, rather that trying to pour it and it dribble down and splash all over the counter.
I actually take notes on the "home-lab" chemistry tips provided in these videos, keep them coming. I don't think the videos even have to strictly be about precious metal refining.
that "tin" blob, could have a little silver in it. with that high of a potential in your cell, it could have complexed the Ag as AgCl2 and deposited it on the stainless cathode. stainless is a poor cathode candidate for HCl electrolytes as well, as you surely saw by its corrosion. i would try it again with lower voltage (MUCH lower voltage) and a graphite cathode. you dont want hydrogen bubbling off the cathode
John Possum No idea. Now I think about it, the soldering stuff could have come from Pateron supporters. Some of the higher tiers can sway the direction of the channel. I don't mind. Cody's Lab is the only channel I will watch religiously.
ha! I went back in after getting a 3 footer than was short and got a free footlong. Now it begs the question "How low of Ag content will still result in a low-melting-point Sn alloy?"
actually, a lot of people got their money from ads (im saying it in past tense because of the adpocolypse) and disabling ad block does give them more money through ads (although supposedly now you have to watch through the ad? im not too sure on that part) i got a lot of this information from two videos (and some claims by other youtubers) 1.) Hang on, how are you so sure that the leftover curly bits of solder don't contain a significant amount of silver? Also, if you want high silver recovery rates, get all the offcuts from commercial refrigeration guys that are too short for them to solder with. Some of them are up to 50% silver. Also contains phosphorus - thus the name "SilPhos".
You dont throw away stubs of silver solder, when you can just stick em together again. Also silfos (tm), doesnt actually contain silver for reasons i cant comprehend either.

Could you make a vid showing how to get a substantial amount of sodium metal from electrolysis? When I do it, it keeps on blowing up in my head.(Note: I have no magnesium available)
Cody, Repairing electrical dingles is my thing, only times i see wires burned off heating elements like that the elements have fried. Quick ohm test before reattach wire will tell the tale.
At that voltage ALL of the metals in the solder will readily electrolyze(is that a word?) and deposit on the electrode. The only effective difference will be the speed at which they do it. Much of the missing silver is either in the tin, or as is suspected the manufacturer skimped on it to begin with. I suspect it is in the tin.
Matthew Fennell he is ambidextrous, meaning he can write equally good (or bad) with both his hands, watch his video on em drives to see him writing with both hands simultaneously
Thomas Stewart distilled water could still have oxygen in it, gasses dissolve in water readily. But oxidation state actually means how many electrons the copper has lost, oxidation confusingly doesn't necessarily involve oxygen.

The Safety Data Sheet from Oatey claims a range of 1-5% for Bismuth, Copper, and Silver. So you were correct, you recovered about 1% of what Oatey says is in their solder.
Would you be interested in refining silver from photography film fixer? it contains silver and I'm about to have a decent amount of it after I develop 3 years' worth of film. I can mail it to you.
AlexCoronaPhoto just Mail it to him, he said in an other post that his adress is on the about page of his channels. Just be sure to add a letter so he knows what he gets ;)
its actually a regional thing, most americans would say sodder, others would say solder, it just depends on where you live, and who pronounces it like that
because there isn't an e at the end of solder to make the o sound long. The position of the tongue when pronouncing "ld" means the ah of the o blends to make it sound like sod. Also, that's the correct pronounciation of solder.
So English gets it from French (soudur/soudure), and in French there is no "L." So originally in English, it was pronounced without the L. A couple hundred years ago, when spelling was getting formalized more and more, it was decided to add an L, to reflect how the original word was spelled in Latin (solidus/solidare). It was still pronounced "Saw - dur" for a long time, but eventually in England, people accidentally started pronouncing the word how it was spelled, rather than how it was supposed to be pronounced. This didn't happen in America for whatever reason.
I've been using silver bearing solder for most of fifty years, the typical solder is listed as 4% silver, it is sufficient to improve the wetting action, and bonding to metal, and strengthen the bond. I expect it's rather difficult to get that little bit, out of the enormous volume of other metals. Of course you've answered a question I've had for a decade, why doesn't silver bearing solder work like it should? Bastardized like everything else of course. Thanks for the fine chemistry experience!!
"Definitely wouldn't wanna get any of this _math_ on my hands." - This is one of many reason we love Cody
Another is that he goes on to show off his left handed writing without really showing off too much...
Crystal Maths is dangerous, kids!
I´d be more worried about getting math into my head. Hence the tinfoil hat.
I won a maths debate.
I'm trying very hard not to be a mathematical genious, takes a lot of time and dedication but its working.
You almost had me worried Cody, really glad you put on those gloves before handling all that dangerous math.
That DHMO stuff is scary. Did you know they use it for cooling nuclear reactors?!?! Crazy!
CAUTION: WATER CONTAINS HIGH LEVELS OF HYDROGEN! KEEP OUT!
dihydrogen monoxide inhalation is actually a leading cause of death for individuals under the age of 19, according to the CDC.
Everyone should watch out about the stuff, and take proper precautions.
Me: I've been putting out a lot of long videos lately I'll just make a quick 3-4 minute video.
Me 3 days later: well 17 minutes is shorter than the last couple...
Cody'sLab make bronze from cooper and tin
Cody'sLab how are you so f**king smart
like this? th-cam.com/video/XPnnTw4Iapo/w-d-xo.html
Cody, can you please do a video about a Newton's cradle in a vacuum chamber.
make a radiation meter
Anyone else think Cody would make like the best highschool chem teacher ever?
Nah, he probably wouldn't have the reactives or the permission to do all the stuff he does...
Micah Philson I WHISH
Tomac, that's true, but he could do the dangerous stuff at home and then show the students these videos.
Micah Philson Better than mine. Mine was of the mind set that the louder she yelled when teaching, the more the knowledge would stick.
Micah Philson hell yeah
Sees broken wire and thinks to himself "damn I wish I had some spare solder right now..."
Oh shit I should have said that! lol though this solder wouldn't work here due to the high temperatures involved.
Cody'sLab it's so weird to see you swear like that. Not saying that it's bad in any way, I'm just not used to you doing it.
Haha yeh if it can get melted by a handheld soldering iron I'm pretty sure it won't last long next to a 1000 degree plus furnace...
Well there was that one time, shooting a gun out of a gun, when he said "Holy shit!".
Dancing Rain there has to be some sort of story or video from whenever that happened? Surely?
Thank god you used gloves for the math.
Yeah, I am wondering if he was hiding an acid spill with that move.
Math. Not even once.
I wonder if OSHA watches these videos?
Doesn't matter if OSHA did.. He isn't at a workplace, he is in his home..
Masterpg2007 GUYS CALM DOWN HES WRITING WITH HIS LEFT HAND HE IS PRACTICING TO BE AMBIDEXTROUS
Cody you should try to crossbreed some plants in your gardening series, it would be really interesting to watch
George thats a greet iedeer
You can cross jalapenos and cayennes, but not cucumbers and tomatoes. Do researchy.
no hes not... he said that his family is mormon but he abandoned believe systems
True. Cody *is* a god.
Good luck with that. I'd rather suggest he tries occulating rather than genetic cross breeding.
This is what I watch this series for- colorful liquids, colorful liquids turning into other colorful liquids, Cody explaining enough to be interesting without explaining so much that it's not boring, and precious metals.
"Either I'm a horrible chemist-"
Or I'm performing somewhat advanced metallurgy in a soufle dish.
This by far has to be one of my favorite episodes. Your method for extracting the base metals was honestly one of the coolest things I've seen.
YES!!! Precious Metal Refining, loved this series. Thanks fro bringing it back, Cody!
I effen 💜 your show, friend. I was a plater for many decades and you know your work. Peace and be safe.
"I have a fan" - no Cody, you have over 1 million fans
*Drinks cyanide* Delicius
*Does math* I am using gloves for this you dont want to get any of this math on your hands its some prety nasty stuff.
That's why we love Cody so much!

The refining series is so PRECIOUS for us!
Now I'm serious, I really love the refining series
Sans The skeleton lmao idk you but your a dork
koosh nah, don't be like that, I'm more like a bonehead ;)
I don't know you, koosh, but maybe you could stand to be a little bit more of a "dork." At least, you should have been when you were in the second grade. That's when they taught the difference between "your" and "you're." :)
was that suppose to be a pun? I'm asking for a friend
Call the company, and complain about the silver content. If you play it right, you could get 20 lbs of solder for free. 😀
But it's lead free, and very mushy... (leaded solder is not dangerous unless it is in plumbing and flows better)
Thermophile 20 lbs of lead free solder? Ewww
Thermophile freeloaders like you are the reason economies are as crappy as they're. You don't buy solder for it's silver content, just like you don't buy McDonald's for it's nutritious content.

AlexCoronaPhoto I can't tell if this is a joke...
So happy this series is back :) This is what I first started watching when I found your channel :)
jesus christ cody why did you open up the solder conspiracy theyre going to make you disappear

This guy deserves the successes he’s found in life
3 people send Cody Soldering stuff
Cody: You guys want to see me extract the silver.
Has over a million subscribers. :)
But he has only a fan
Quantum Shooter Just "A" fan?
yeah, I laughed at that, too. BTW where is this address to send him something?
John Possum No idea. Now I think about it, the soldering stuff could have come from Pateron supporters. Some of the higher tiers can sway the direction of the channel. I don't mind. Cody's Lab is the only channel I will watch religiously.
about section on my channel
Woohoo!!!! This series is what brought me to Cody over a year ago!! Thanks Cody!
This is how lawsuits are born. Remember the guy who posted a pic of subways, "footlong," and it was only 11 inches?
ha! I went back in after getting a 3 footer than was short and got a free footlong. Now it begs the question "How low of Ag content will still result in a low-melting-point Sn alloy?"
I also have something that is 11 inches.
SQASH Can I sue if you don't make tape
SQASH they only make 12 inch rulers
my friend does the same thing with every fish he catches
Seriously love when cody drops a new video. No matter what it is. I watch. Thanks Cody!
had to go back and disable ad-block before watching
Why? It worked for me. And no, it does not change how much any YT channel makes. At least that's what Ave says.
actually, a lot of people got their money from ads (im saying it in past tense because of the adpocolypse) and disabling ad block does give them more money through ads (although supposedly now you have to watch through the ad? im not too sure on that part) i got a lot of this information from two videos (and some claims by other youtubers)

The truth is they make about $2 per 1000 views of their vids. But they generally make much more on their patreon accounts.
If I were Cody I would set up affiliate accounts with places like Amazon and any other I could. This way it doesn't cost any one anything more but it supports them if you chose to. I've supported a few YTers this way... like buying wire strippers from their store. I like this option because every one wins.
Plus most of us make purchases nearly every day if not weekly. (Amazon's stock just hit its 52 week high not long ago meanwhile Walmart's just dropped. )
I just realized Cody should get a sponsor. Maybe a chemical company or a geology company or something. Apparently that is where the real money is but it is easy to sell out, too. He should have a list of his own rules before approaching them.
but $2 per 1000 views is still a lot (and a bit too much really, i think you might not be taking into consideration how yt splits the revenue with its creators) 1000000 is $2000. and i know a minority of channels get 1000000 views per video, but for the channels that are big enough, its a well paying job

14:40 They say that highly intelligent people have terribly legible writing. You back up that theory my friend. Love all your videos and love you man, you're an inspiration! Thank you :)
On the topic of recovering metals, you could grow some copper crystals.
There are very few sources on youtube for growing copper but it appears the lower your curent the more crystal-like the crystal will be.
(if you grow it really slowly you get pure copper in a real crystal structure)
I would do it myself but I haven't got any rooms in which I could keep a jar of acid for the required time :/
The metal refining and recovery is what got me hooked originally. Glad to hear they're coming back!
Let me refine a sliver of solder silver so I sell the silver sliver
Ok internet, say it ten times fast😆
You'd spend more on shipping than its even worth. ;-P
John Possum I know but I thought it would be funny.
Console peasant I like your profile pic
Quality Luxury your profile pic is amazing dude👊
I stumbled upon your "Precious Metal Refining" series on accident about a year ago, and I've been really enjoying all your content since. Really happy to see this series back again.
Wears gloves when doing math. Doesn't wear gloves when touching mercury. Ok Cody!
Also, are you right handed?
I suspect he is trying to improve his handwriting with his left hand.
I came down here looking for this comment, surprised its not top.
Same here. Definitely something fishy about the penmanship
I suspect he was holding the camera with his right hand.
This series and th mining series are how I got into your channel. Glad its back.
I saw you casting bullets on a previus video. If you want to make your bullets harder use a little of Sn in there to make tge lead harder. And if ypu make mossy you can react it quite easily with acid. Plus you can use the stannus chloride made as a biproduct for gold detection in solution.
I am really glad you brought this series back! It was one of my favorites
Very nice. Always wondered how much silver you could actually get out of that. The tin looks much more fun to play with though....
I didn't know, I haven't been wearing proper PPE in Math class... Thanks for the great videos as always. :) I know this is an older one, and you'll never see this, but it's been a heck of a week and I'm binge watching your videos to relax.
YAY REFINING!!
as cody was saying he dosent do this for profit he just likes showing us the interesting science behind what hes doing in each video
Yayyy I love this series!
Lord of Stars lol u are watching Cody too ?
ChestField ye I've found him when he had something like 100k subs xd
Cody dude. You dont need to explain yourself but I think its super sweet when you do
"While I'm at it I may as well melt down my ball of tin here"
*1 second later*
"Looks like it broke my dish"
OMG Cody thank you for bring this back this was the real reason I started watching your channel
Can you grow a precious metal plant in your hydroponic garden :)
Asking the real question
Thank god you answer my prayers Cody's making more precious refining video again
You should also turn your fan up while using maths; vapors are bad...
Maths is not a word idiot
the metal refining and recovery videos are my favourite I'm glad they're back.
Hang on, how are you so sure that the leftover curly bits of solder don't contain a significant amount of silver?
Also, if you want high silver recovery rates, get all the offcuts from commercial refrigeration guys that are too short for them to solder with. Some of them are up to 50% silver. Also contains phosphorus - thus the name "SilPhos".
an alloy is a homogenous mixture meaning the curls would have the same 1-5% silver the rest of the SS had.
You dont throw away stubs of silver solder, when you can just stick em together again. Also silfos (tm), doesnt actually contain silver for reasons i cant comprehend either.
this series has always been my favorite to watch from you, Cody! Thank you for the hours of entertainment
Cody might as well just unintentionally exposed the soldering companies
This is why your channel is my favorite channel on YT
I feel bad for using TH-cam red when watching channels like Cody, it pays TH-camrs by their view time a month
$15 (cost of red)
TH-cam takes $8
70% goes to hi podcast because how much hours podcasts take up
20% other podcasts
5% nerdcubed news
1% jacks films
4% other crap
0.001% Codys lab
Cody only uploads 1 25m video a month, I listen to more than 100 hours of podcasts a month, barely anything goes to Cody
I like your long videos, most people are boring when doing long videos, but you keep it interesting.
2:27 we get it cody, you vape bro
How?
I loved this series please keep it going ! I dont care if you make money or not i love whats the whole process from start to finish, keep up the great videos man they are very entertaining and ive learned alot too and im not even refining any metal but if i ever had to these are pretty good things to know
Cody, please show us how to smith woodcutting axes out of smelted and refined runite ore
So glad you decided to bring back this series!! One of my favourites!!
Yay finally more Precious Metal Refining vids 😃😃😃
wonderful video Cody! your videos are so awesome to see how these techniques can translate over to real applications! you a do a great duty to science!
Could you make a vid showing how to get a substantial amount of sodium metal from electrolysis? When I do it, it keeps on blowing up in my head.(Note: I have no magnesium available)
havent watched all of your videos but this is indeed the first one where i've noticed you're left handed. glad to see a fellow sinistral :]
Could you make Uranium metal from your ore?
diy nuke
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz of course😂😂
Didn't he say he was going to do that eventually?
I doubt he would be able to concentrate the 235U in it, but knowing him I actually don't doubt it
I'm 13 and doesn't
Cole Hickey nice
Cody, Repairing electrical dingles is my thing, only times i see wires burned off heating elements like that the elements have fried. Quick ohm test before reattach wire will tell the tale.
What materials do you require for your videos? I will attempt to buy some for you
I guess you can always support him through patreon :)
Shadi Nachat if you want to support him, he has a patreon :)
I love this series! Seeing lots of real chemistry at work is awesome
16 volts? Seriously? Gee I wonder where the silver could be...
you might be right.
Cody'sLab I'm lost, is that low or high?
Elaborate please
At that voltage ALL of the metals in the solder will readily electrolyze(is that a word?) and deposit on the electrode. The only effective difference will be the speed at which they do it. Much of the missing silver is either in the tin, or as is suspected the manufacturer skimped on it to begin with. I suspect it is in the tin.
these types of videos are the reason i subscribed.... so chuffed science is back on the agenda!
Are you right handed, but using your left? Did you dye your hands?
Dan iel Yeah either he was using his wrong hand or has terrible handwriting 😂
Matthew Fennell he is ambidextrous, meaning he can write equally good (or bad) with both his hands, watch his video on em drives to see him writing with both hands simultaneously
I love the metal refining and recovery series. Please keep making them.
"Diluting the acid should turn from green to blue." Please explain this. It blows my mind that diluting something should change its colour.
Changes the ph and thereby the oxidation state of the copper.
Thanks Cody. So I guess it wouldn't work with distilled water because the oxygen is absent, correct?
Thomas Stewart distilled water could still have oxygen in it, gasses dissolve in water readily. But oxidation state actually means how many electrons the copper has lost, oxidation confusingly doesn't necessarily involve oxygen.
Everytime Cody lets out a half-mouthed "yes" I imagine a mad scientist, and this being their video logs.
No!!! Lead-free solder is the most evil thing ever done to electronics!
MZ flighter lead solder is the worst thing to happen to lungs though
danny
Not true, the harmful gasses released by solder is from the flux not the lead, and lead free solder actually needs more flux to properly wet the metal, therefore the leaded solder is better for the lungs. The reason for the push away from leaded solder was electronics going into landfills polluting the environment with excess lead in the soil
Pick a side, do you care about organic life, or inorganic life
You don't breathe in the lead, that's the flux burning off. Lead solder is fine just don't eat it, that's how you get poisoned
This is plumbing solder. Lead free electronics solder (at least that I've seen) is 100% tin, it doesn't contain silver.
The Safety Data Sheet from Oatey claims a range of 1-5% for Bismuth, Copper, and Silver. So you were correct, you recovered about 1% of what Oatey says is in their solder.
Drinking Game: Everytime he says tin, take a shot
I am so excited for this series. What made me subscribe, even tho I have now watched all your videos. Thanks Cody.
I love copper because of the brilliant colors it can make. I love elements that can produce many different colors.
I cant be the only one who thought that the blue liquid looked taste (I know you can't drink it)
YES, best series you do by far. love your videos, DO MORE METAL STUFF.

Why do Americans pronounce solder as sodder?
Because the l is silent
Andrew F I'm not even American and I pronounce it like that. (Although I might have been influenced by Americans.)
its actually a regional thing, most americans would say sodder, others would say solder, it just depends on where you live, and who pronounces it like that
because there isn't an e at the end of solder to make the o sound long.
I have the same furnace and the aluminum contact blocks they use melt when you use them. I replaced them with steel bolts and its working fine so far.
Cody is a prime example of how bomb cults are made, good thing he's got a girlfriend to prevent that.
ALL JOKES PLEASE DONT TAKE OFFENCE!!
Thank you so much for bringing this series back it's my favorite
Definitely wouldn't want to get any of this Math on my hands...It's some nasty stuff isn't it.

Vul Skelion Uhm????
Sooo glad to see this series again! Hope there will be ALOT more!
I have the same type of foundry as you do and it commonly breaks. You are not alone
I've loved this series since episode one, glad to see it's back!
Big fan of the precious metal refining series.
So happy this series is back!!!
Idc if it's for money or just to mess around I just like watching you're videos bc they are fun and cool and I get to learn new thing
