I agree, there’s a lot of videos that focus on ‘restoring’ an old tool back to show room quality finishes. There’s something to be said for just maintaining and prolonging the life of a tool, letting a workhorse do what it does best, work.

It must be nice to have all the tools
When we had broken handles, we just threw the head in a fire to burn out the broken piece. It was a lot easier than trying to dig it out.
Still a nice video though.
You ruin the heat treatment
V Tramell that's what I did several times and it works great especially on wood that was outs for years
drill works good after digging out the steel.
Nice video, I put the head into a bucket of water for a couple of days to expand the wood a bit, I use 21lb and 10lb short shafted hammers in fabrication, they get a lot of stick
What's the oily stuff he puts on at the end? Wood glue?

Just replaced my wheelbarrow tire this Spring with a new solid tire. No more annoying flats for me. Next up, a new handle for the splitting maul that I soak in a bucket of water because it’s loose...

Interesting Video, I got a 20 Pound Sledge Hammer with a busted handle & a Steel Ring in the center of the top of the handle for the hammer head, I was wondering how to remove the old handle, with that Steel ring in it & without damaging anything, gonna need that ring also.
What is the grinding disk specification ?

You can get a lot of replacement handle at hardware store but the quality can be hit or miss. Online theirs a site called house handles

I’ve found that varnish on wooden handles will eat your hands up. I always remove the varnish and apply boiled linseed oil

I was told by an old timer at the hardware store I used to work at that the easiest way to get the wood out of the old sledgehammer head is to drop the whole thing into a campfire and then pick it out the following day.
You have to build a fire for that.
Really enjoyed the video, and yes it is oddly satisfying making simple repairs around the house that take little effort.
I can't believe I'm discussing wheelbarrows Jon lol. Is that a foam tyre? I replaced mine with a solid foam one, no more punctures!

When I was young I was taught to put on the head and his lying it straight bang the base of the handle up and down. Gravity and its own weight will force the head on. Do the opposite with the tapered head of a pink-axe.
You mean you can repair those lol. Like you Ive been doing that every spring for many years. Start off the season with good working tools and the work seems easier. Can’t tell you how many tools Ive seen at the dump that could have and should have been repaired. Thanks for another great video.

I replaced my broken wheelbarrow handle with a 2x4. It looks so funny, but it works pretty good.
Clamp the hammer head in a vice or clamp it down well. A drill bit through your fingers really REALLY HURTS. Shop safety first.

Hi Jon, I have a slow leak in my wheelbarrow tire and I have had it in the water blow several times now but I cannot find where it is leaking from, I have changed the valve but still it goes down. I think I am going to have to bit the bullet and get a new inner tube.
This time I’m using a flat less tire

True, but those of us who do get hammer and axe heads dirt cheap now.
I have those exact two repairs on my list. Seems like I just replaced the wheelbarrow wheel last year. That Chinese rubber is something to be desired.

I used to have a mom and pop hardware store and would put on the new handle for customers. I didn't taper the handle to fit. I would uniformly shave (on a bench grinder) to fit so that the thickness would be maximized.

I was so glad to see you open the socket box and see what I saw
My only concern is the thickness of the wood between the head and handle from my experience that is the failure point on properly seated heads but yours is especially thin in that area
I still don't trust wooden handles. I know they give you heads up, but,..😢 I am a complete, no good for nothing, no one loves me, a fool. 😫 I love harborfreights mommy.

No wonder people are out of shape, if they use an electric tool for any little task that could be easily done with a manual one, file, hacksaw etc etc...

I noticed that when you’re hammering the new handle, you do it while holding the head off the ground. Why do that rather than resting the head on the wood and pounding the handle into it? Thanks!
adamkrezz I don't know the science behind it. It's weird how it works, but this way makes a tighter fit for some reason. Doing it the other way doesn't necessarily get a tight fit and could fly off as you are using it.
I would scrape or sand off the lacquer on the sledge handle and put some boiled linseed oil on it. Lacquer doesn't protect the wood and will rub blisters onto your hand

I mean what you did 'worked'....but it was a seriously terrible hafting. Not something you would do more than once every few years. Don't cut the excess before putting in wedge 🤦♂️. Drawknife....not flap disc. Seat heavy hammer right down on shoulder, thats what its for. Don't split all the wood within the eye with extra metal wedge. I mean, you got it done but that's kinda like me making hairdressing video. Ill cut off the hair bit it aint pretty.
