I've only been into collecting house plants for a few months. But I've watched hundreds of plant related videos and have created a list of plants that I'd like to get. This video has the best practical advice that I've come across. I'll be scratching off some things from my list now. Thanks for the helpful video!
Thanks so much!! Plant collecting is a constant learning experience so just do what you can because you’ll always be doing stuff that’s right and wrong lol!
My Verru’s internodal spacing decreased significantly when I put her on a pole. Also, I am enjoying my Paraiso much more since I put her on a heat mat.
I love my paraiso verde and here is why: I got it on clearance fo $7. It did nothing for a few months so it was very satisfying when I anchored it to a bamboo stake and started growing really well. It was small when I got and its be fun watching the leaves size up. I dont care that it has low/no variegation, I just like that the leaves and groth pattern are different to other plants I have.
New subscriber! I see you're in Georgia, so am I. I've bought some begonias from the lady cove, they're based in Florida and do Instagram live sales. I love the way they pack and since they're not too far away they usually get to me really quick. They typically have rex and some angel wing begonias. I've bought probably 10 or so begonias from them and all but 1 are still alive, the 1 outlier was definitely my fault though lol. But I love the lady cove, they take such good care of everything. Probably half my collection is from them
Whenever I loose interest in a genus of plants, I usually try to sell, give away, or rearrange them into a single large pot. Makes taking care of them easier and gives more space for the class I’m currently interested in haha. So right now I have a bushy alocasia collection in one pot, and pothos in another while keeping the ones I still like in their own pots (cuprea, hytereophylla, manjula etc)
Yes! I LOVE mixed planters of trailing plants- conserves so much space and looks SO GOOD! I was considering potting some Alocasia together as well because I have so many babies right now but the jury’s still out on that one 😄
Hello fellow Planty friend! Super glad YT recommended you to me. I’ve subscribed and I really enjoyed the video. I started my channel back in January and so far I’ve really enjoyed the community over here! I also am over a Pothos lol. Turns out I’m not great at growing the very plant every says is the easiest to grow!! 😂 give me an anthurium however and I will make that baby thrive!! Idk. Funny. Anyways, I wish you an amazing week and I look forward to more of your content 😊
One of my first plants was a pothos and a succulent and I killed both within a month 😂 I was like man I really am not cut out for this and now I’m practically a hoarder! Thanks so much for the sweet comment!!! I’ll be looking up your channel!! 😊
Hey! If you really love the ivy look and growth pattern but they aren’t clicking, maybe look into ficus pumila quercifolia. They are very small but have a similar leaf shape and are quite hardy/ fast growing if they have decent humidity.
This is such a great video, especially for beginners! I feel like so many of us are in this same position. Like seriously, we do not need every version of every plant 🤣 It's hard because we get plants and then a new version comes out or one we couldn't afford is finally more accessible and we sometimes want that version more.
Absolutely!! Plant prices fluctuate SO much with these new variants- then the ‘old’ version isn’t as expensive. They know how to keep us spending that’s for sure! Nowadays it definitely takes more to get me to purchase something. You have to be thoughtful because it’s incredibly addictive and before long you’ll have 30 versions of the same plant (me @ me)😅😅
@leaveswithles they really do! Now before I buy a plant I do as much research as I can to see how many different versions there are and if the one I want isn't accessible at the moment, I just wait it out instead of buying the cheaper one that I can actually afford at the moment. The whole "well I'll just get this one because I can't afford the other one" days are over haha
I have come to the same conclusion about pothos! It is crazy how many of them there are and they are so similar. Someone in my local plant group was wanting $$$ for cuttings of a Japanese global that looked to me very similar to other varieties. My Paraiso Verde was a disappointment, too. It’s got heat and bright light, but never has returned to the level of variegation it had when I bought it. It was an impulse buy so I’m more careful now about spending a lot on a plant!
@@leaveswithles There was also alcohol involved (the plant sale is held at a brewery) and pressure from my husband to lighten up and spend a little! 😝 I’ve been more careful since then!
I wonder if some of the stragglyness of some of the plants is lack of bright light? My Florida green has 1 inch internodal spacing at most (a half inch in some places), and my Prince of Orage is literally 0. There is no space between one leaf and the next. They are both under decent light (grow light) and the leaf size is about the same as yours. The amount of leaves is also about the same. Mine are just not stretched out like that. That's all I can think of. Have you tried colocasia in pon? I have never owned one. Just wondered if it would like the moisture better. Yes on the Ivy though. I cannot figure out how to keep them alive inside lol. They thrive on abuse outside, but can't handle safety inside lmao. If you ever figure out how to get them to thrive I would love a vid on it. Your bagonia is fantasic btw. Goals. I only have one and I am just now figuring out exactly what it wants from me.
Thank you! Begonia are fickle sometimes so it takes a bit to figure them out! I’m not a pon person currently- just haven’t invested any effort in learning about it but I’m sure I’ll experiment eventually 😅 I was so confused by the ivy! I’m like you’re literally growing out of concrete outdoors and my indoor environment that I have SPECIFICALLY tailored to you isn’t good enough?!?!?? Get over yourself 😆🤣
For me it's every single type of Alocasia and also Pink princess, always dying or in the verge of dying that I throw it away. It was too much stress and no joy.
Absolutely there with you for the pink princess. I’ve had like 6 and they were all wonky and malformed. I’m working with one now that’s okay but I’m constantly like 👀👀
I do not love my philos.😂 They all look the same when they’re immature. They all take up so much space when they get big. I take that back-I like my trailing ones. But I’ll never buy another philo.😅 My hoyas are everything and I don’t need more of any other genus.😂
I think I’ll always have love for philos because they’re what took me from “I’ll just get a few plants so my house looks nice” to “I need to buy more shelves and humidifiers to make my house better for the plants” 😆 Nowadays they definitely don’t do it for me like Hoya and anthurium do just because they aren’t as interesting to me but there will always be a few in there 😁
She abt pothos, philodendrons, ivy and colocasias 😂. Caladiums are nice medium and work inside half the time. And finally had some luck with non-common ivy varieties and treat them like my false aralias. But the rest, not buying any more of those kinds for my
Do the Caladium keep their leaves in winter? I've heard they drop them all even if they are under grow lights inside. (Specifically in places with cold winters)

I was wondering why I was having a hard time growing my ivy! Everyone else is always like ivy is so easy to grow… umm not mine. 😂
Heck no it’s literally been the hardest plant to grow and the whole time I was like ??????? 😆
My Verru’s internodal spacing decreased significantly when I put her on a pole. Also, I am enjoying my Paraiso much more since I put her on a heat mat.
Using a heat mat is a great idea, I didn’t even think of it!

Hey $7 is a fantastic deal regardless of how you feel about it! Me & Mr.Paraiso didn’t get along but I’m happy yours is bringing you so much joy! 😊

Fantastic!! Thank you so much for the recommendation!!

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for sharing!! They are absolutely adorable, definitely going on the wish list!!
Thank you for sharing the video. I have a tiny flat and resonate with everything you said 🙂

new subbie here🥰🥰🥰🥰 love about plantssss🥰🥰🥰

Hey we all impulse buy 😆 The Pothos varieties are so out of control- beautiful but crazy expensive sometimes for what it is.
@@leaveswithles There was also alcohol involved (the plant sale is held at a brewery) and pressure from my husband to lighten up and spend a little! 😝 I’ve been more careful since then!
Well you certainly aren’t to blame then, what else could you do?!😆

This is the absolute truth and I wish I had known this a lot sooner! Lol, Hoya Curtisii is my arch enemy!
Hey we’re always learning right?! And we all have a few that are our arch nemesis, what can ya do 💁🏼♀️
For me it's every single type of Alocasia and also Pink princess, always dying or in the verge of dying that I throw it away. It was too much stress and no joy.

I felt the same about philos...that's probably why I only got a Ring of Fire...thought it to will get big one day lol
😂😂 She is telling the truth! Why buy this if you already have that?
Ur not giving ur Florida enough light, the inter nodal space is too big. Mine has 10 leaves and only 1 feet tall
