    Absolutely love these pens, the x450 and x750 are the perfect gateway drug into fountain pens. Suspiciously inexpensive for the quality of pen you get. Metal, durable, gorgeous, huge variety of colors, and writes incredibly well, again especially for what you pay for these. Plus you can swap out the nibs if you want to experiment. But beware, once you start with these, its easy to end up buying more.. a lot more...

    They are incredibly well made pens. Irrespective of the price they are lovely to write with. At a work event someone complimented me on my nice pen. I didnt tell them is cost £5.🎉

    I like my X450's. Caps could post a little bit tighter, but that's about it. They have class, aren't garish, and write quite well. What's not to like?
    I plan on swapping the standard M nibs for Flex and Fine or Extra Fine. Might even try the Zebra G Nib conversion.
    Even if I were 50 ~ 55 years younger, I don't see any reason they wouldn't last my lifetime, and at least that of my grand kids and great grandkids.
    Oh yeah ... I got four off Amazon for $19.99, plus free shipping. 😁
    EDIT:
    "It looks like an inexpensive pen ..."
    I must respectfully disagree. To my eyes, the black with gold trim X450 looks as good an a Mont Blanc or other "luxury" pen of the same style and color. The X450 would not look out of place in a boardroom.

    One significant detail that nobody seems to have spotted is the X450 writing grip housing has plastic threads, but the X750 and 159 have metal threading on the writing grip housing. Not sure if that would make it a deal-breaker, but I think metal threading would have been much better.
    Thanks for another great video Douglas.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Plastic threads can be a good thing or a bad thing. Because the 159 has metal threads on the barrel and plastic in the cap, when they cross thread, it makes the cap pretty much useless. I have two in that state. Where plastic on plastic threads or metal on metal are less susceptible to cross threading. Also, the x450's plastic section has that triangular shape that forces your fingers into a particular grip. All in all, the x450, x750 and 159 are incredible pens for the money.

    I have 2 I would never give up--they are just such smooth writers, you might have to do a small bit of surgery on the nib, which on one I did, it was stingy on the ink flow. The 450 & 92 and I just bought the 750 all in medium nibs.

  • @nickelazoyellow7360

    So I bought one of these in ivory about 6 months ago. Was so disgusted with the leaking I ripped out the nib and tossed the rest. I decided to try again recently and this one works beautifully. I use it in reverse to sketch out preliminary lines, then the regular nib side to make thicker lines and fill in areas. Have Noodler's Squeteague in it right now.

    I believe Jinhao being the first one before getting down the rabbit hole is a common theme. About four years ago I got back to using fountain pens after a few yeras of break. I bough a X450 on eBay for as little as 2-3 USD. It was first of many pens I bought since (not all, but still most of them Chinese ones). I haven't use X450 for a long time now (I prefer plastic/resin pens) but I remember back then it has a huge "wow" effect - that you can buy a perfectly well working and good looking fountain pen for as little as that.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are great give-away pens as well. I think I bought four. Now I have none. However, I have three 159s which will be my knock-around, experimental pens.

  • @edwardstaats4935
    @edwardstaats4935 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They are fine pens. I prefer X750 mainly because of the grip. I do like the 159 also. I get mine from AliExpress. My only issue is the barrel chips

      I have two M600s; the StarBlue and the Teal, and I have an M600 - the checkerboard. I fought with the checkerboard for a couple of months, swapping nibs in and out. That Schmidt that came with it just never did it for me. It has a Bobby Bent nib in it now and is fabulous. I'm working on "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out" right now. Some of the least expensive pens can be the ones you use the most. I love the X159. Cheap price but, wow, what a great pen to use. Aesthetically, it is not something I would wave Infront of people for glam (maybe some friends who are bargain hunters would appreciate it). But for utility it is hard to beat.

    I have yet to come across a Jinhao that I didn't like. At this rate, I may have one of each model Jinhao in production by the end of 2021. 😁
    The X450 was one of the first 3 modern fountain pens I bought, and it, like virtually all my Jinhaos, is in fairly constant use.
    Though I still love my vintage lever fill pens, I've been happy with a lot of the cheaper Chinese pens I've gotten (only time I struck out was with the Hero 616 basic model. Truly unpleasant pens, IMO. Add in the aerometric filling system, I only kept them to remind myself not to get another...)
    Might not always have one of my vintage pens inked up, but I always have a selection of Chinese pens inked, and always a Jinhao. Very nice workhorse pens.

I a little apprehensive about switching nibs as yet. I was confused about getting jinhao 450, 750 and x159. Which one would you recommend? Please consider that I generally use medium nibs. • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't believe you will get a lifetime warranty from a Jinhao fountain pen, but they are inexpensive so if you drop it or lose it, it doesn't cost much to replace. To clean it just remove the cartridge and run the grip section with the nib and feed attached under some running water our of your tap until the water runs clear. Then just leave it in a paper towel for a bit to dry out any excess water and attach a new cartridge (or converter).

      Bobby has stores on Esty "ChinesePen", eBay "office_supplies_pen" and AliExpress "St. Penbpps Pen Store". Here is the category just for nibs on his AliExpress store tinyurl.com/cdjepds He sells the small turned up nib called "bent" in #5, #6 and the hooded nib types. He also sells the more bent style "fude" nibs. It depends on what you are looking for.

    I own three of these, and I have two complaints with them. First, they are crazy heavy. And secondly, being paint over brass, they dent easily. If either the cap or pen itself rolls off your desk and hits a hard surface on the end, you'll wind up with a dimple on the pen. Unlike yours, at least one of mine has proven easy to scratch. I like my Jinhao Century pens, but don't care as much for the X450s I have.

    • @InkquiringMinds

      For $6US they aren't bad. They are heavy. And I hate the grip. I like the x750 better than the x450 but the Jinhao 100 Centennial is a winner all around.

      I like the 992 as a light EDC pen with the nib option it came with, the X750 for its look, the snap cap and the heft. Recently I bought my first Centennials. I have one in a pink cracked ice finish inked up with Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji. While it's a smooth writer (and I seem to be consistently lucky in not getting scratchy nibs or baby's bottom), It's a bit too wide for my needs. But since I can swap in #6 nibs, I'm looking forward to giving that a go. I find the Centennials a great ergonomic fit. There are still a few finishes that are beckoning.
