    Fude nibs are great for people who ink their sketches. It takes time to master, especially the finer angles but it's like carrying three pens of varying nib sizes... Quite useful for line variations on a drawing, if you must pack light.

    I took my Ahab flex nib (which I was about to throw away), and put it on my X750 brushed stainless steel, and I am thoroughly enjoying using the pen the more. I set the feed back a bit to make it less wet. The x750 brushed stainless steel is a very attractive pen; nice weight (even for my smaller hands). I tend to write with it capped.

      In the grand scheme of things, I am still a relative newbie, although I have been using fountain pens for about two decades. I recently started to collect pens. The X450 was the first pen I bought after deciding to buy some more pens, and I knew nothing about them except the one old, no name pen I first owned and then a Waterman Phileas that I have had for 20+ years now. My 450 stopped working and while watching your video, I pulled it apart yet again. I had flushed it out well previously to no avail but while watching your video, I pulled out the nib and soaked the nib and feed in hot water for a while. One thing I realized is that the X450 ink hole is pretty far back on the feed section, so my little bottle of Diamine Strawberry ink in a tiny ink sample bottle wouldn't fill very well with a converter, so it drew very little ink. I wasted more than I got in the converter just playing with it and trying to get the nib to not feed so much at a time, which left my notepad a bloody looking mess, with red bleeding all over. So, I finally just thew in a standard international cartridge for now. At least I got it writing again. I had given up on it earlier and just ordered a new X450 that was only $2 or so in order to get a new nib/feed/converter out of the deal and will take a month to arrive. At least I will have a spare in a different color now or a pen to giveaway. Anyway, watching how easy you made it look, I figured that I had nothing to lose since I had a dead pen. One more plus is that I finally got my old generic branded cartridge pen writing again after over two decades of non-use or maintenance since I put its feed section into the same hot water bath in a large, old coffee mug. I tried international standard cartridges and converters in the pen to no avail. I finally found that an Aihao cartridge I had laying around from a $1 pen would fit and write in that old pen, so today I got two of them writing again. I don't mind inexpensive pens, since I learn from them. I have more expensive ones, too, and have drooled over some of the ones you have shown on your videos. One pen at a time, though...

    Man, I was listening to random pen videos on autoplay, and this came on. That shootout intro sound was so much louder than EVERYTHING else I've been watching, I threw my headset across the room. You should lower that a bit, hopefully you have already in the intervening years.

    Thank you for the review! Now I have 3 X750s!
    Would you make a shootout between X750 and Metropolitan?
    I have both of them, and it is difficult to decide which I should take today :P
    Also, all of my Chinese pens(Jinhao, Baoer, Kaigelu) have minor misalignment issue, though it's easy to fix with bare hands. Have you encounter the same problem?

  • @kh23797
    @kh23797 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks, Stephen, a thorough workout. Isn't the item at 4:23 a grommet? I see AliExpress have many lovely Jinhao (including Baoer) models at silly low prices for materials, durability and build that belie the tiny outlay. Free delivery is 30+ days to W. Europe, 5-8 if you pay a premium. When I started collecting in the 1960s, it was a much pricier affair- today, we can look to Asia to accrue a nice collection for (relatively) peanuts.

    that's a very very interesting shootout. i haven't gotten either one of them, because i'm "saving for more expensive pens", and even that's going not as planned. but those two, especially with the thousands of different finishes, are still very intriguing. but i like writing with slightly broader nibs, so i choose my pens more carefully now, since money is tight.
    very nice shootout. thanks!

    A lot of pens are too pointed at nib, like writing on a nail. They may even be wet, but are not good nibs because the point is too tiny or sharp, like a nail. Many hooded nibs are like this and regular fine nibs as well. Reviewers rarely consider this nib problem and recommend bad pens/nibs because they're not aware of the problem.

    I have got a Jinhao X450 which was really dry, I just flushed it out with water and dish-washing detergent so now the flow of the pen is great. I own some Chinese fountain pens, they were all dry when I used them right away, but after flushing them out they were fine. I believe it is a good idea to flush Chinese pens out with water and detergent before using them. The feeds look dirty and blocked by dust or other stuff. Great review, thanks

    I bought some X750s that are being shipped to me right now (6 for $34 incl. shipping). I wanted to buy several replacement nibs at Goulet Pen and try them out in these pens. But now you have me curious about the Fude nib. Since you have it in your X750 I assume that they could be bought as replacement nibs, but I've looked on line and can't find them. Do you know who might sell them?
    Thank you and thanks for a great review!

    I dislike the ribbed finger grips on sections of the X450's. I think they would be great pens without them. I received one with the section misaligned which places the finger grips in the wrong orientation to the nib and do not see that it can be fixed. That pen also has several paint problems. The seller was adamant that these issues were not "defects" but says he's sending a replacement. Nice try! The other X450 I have is perfect (different seller) other than the dreaded ribbed grip.
    I've got a couple of X750's on the way and can't wait to try them out. Thanks Stephen!

    • @GlennHigley
      @GlennHigley 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine have a flat surface on the inside of the section where a corresponding flat part of a ring on the feed fits. I'm afraid that if I try a different orientation that I'll break the ring and make them leak.

    These pens cost about £2.30 (including P&P). I was surprised how good they are for the price. My one was a bit too wet for my liking so I had to make it drier, but its a simple task. definitely going to buy a few of them just as 'throw around' pens.
    It makes you wonder how they can sell these at such a low price, being metal etc. Probably cheap labour or something.

      In China there is a bigger usage of pen than pencil. Schools in Asia and I think majority of Europe as well don't use pencil after certain grades and will do all their writing in pen therefore demand for pens is significantly higher. When i was in school in Vietnam, fountain pens were the work horses over ball point. Bottled ink is significantly lower overtime cost than ball point and culturally people preferred reusable products over disposable. They simply produce these pens in such large quantity that they lowered cost significantly. These pen costs is about 4-10 bucks for us that's is their 2-5 days wage in Asia. It's safe to say they charged us extra to for profit. It's not to say that these jinhao are cheap for them. It could be their higher end pens so the quality is so much higher.

    Stephen, many Jinhao reviews show or refer to dryness and/or skipping. How did you get your X450 that wet? I, too, prefer wetter pens, and I also have to stay in the inexpensive pen range, so the 450 (which to me looks awesome) has me interested.

    Why does everybody who makes these pen videos recommend silicone grease when everybody knows how good it is at causing everything from autoimmune illnesses to breast cancer? After more than 100 years in the writing instrument industry, and in spite of the fact that silicone was invented in Germany, Montblanc still uses lamb grease at their factory in Hamburg. That makes me very curious about something: Are they still using lamb grease strictly as a matter of tradition? Or are they sticking with natural grease because they don't want to expose their employees to toxic synthetic garbage?
