Holy freakin' shit, IU is out with another cinematic masterpiece!
PS - I had to re-record some soundbites because of how I completely mispronounced Tang Wei's name. So there are a few moments where the audio sounds a bit different (cause I had to speak quielty since every one's asleep haha).

IU said “Shh.' contains the voices of female vocalists from each generation. The lyrics are about important women in our lives. I'm singing about my mum, HYEIN is singing about her first friend. WONSUN JOE sings about the complicated emotions towards one's role model. It's a song about women sharing their complicated emotions that can't be summarized simply as either love, friendship, obsession or something else.”
Plus, the participating singers, directors, actors, and narrators are all women. Although (maybe) the main story is about a mother and daughter, because that’s the first and the most important relationship between women and it seems like IU was first inspired by mother-daughter relationship, It’s not only about that, It’s about the diverse and complex relationships between different women and the respect we have for them. This is a story of female solidarity through generations that all women can relate to!!!

The mobius trip can also mean the fact that a mother (the end) was once a daughter (the beginning) and the daughter will become a mother (the end) and the daughter (will be the beginning). It's always a loop.
And just like you said at the beginning, when we are children, most of the time we don't value the mother's relationship. And it turns out to be a repetitive cycle. Because when a daughter grows up not valuing it, she ends up growing up and not valuing the daughter and we go back to a repetitive cycle. We're back in an eternal loop.
At least that was one of the sensations that MV gave me.

I Love how in the Context with the Video HYEIN basically is taking the Role of Tang Wei as the Daughter vocally and IU herself and on top of that WONSUN JOE who came in vocally towards the End as the Mother of IU (Maybe) 👀👍🏻

@@hannahren102Although I'm partial towards Hyein, it's very difficult for me to choose between the four singers, I love that their ages are practically from different generations. But Patty Kim's voice has a lot of character and emotion, her years of experience are noticeable. I'm glad IU convinced her to come out of retirement for this collaboration.

IU dropping MVs every week like its nothing 😅 Such a Legend.❤
This song is so damn good, gives me Portishead vibes to the extend i think there is actually a sample from a Portishead song in it in the beginning ( right after the guitar )

The song/MV is so haunting and continues to give me chills non-stop. The loop of mother/daughter is clearly the main construct in the MV. How often do we hear stories where the daughter's love for her mother as a child fades into distant memory as she grows older, only to be rediscovered, remembered, and finally understood when the daughter becomes a mother with her own daughter.
With all the diverse showing of brilliance in IU's other tracks, this is without a doubt my favorite to savor over and over again. (I didn't think it was possible!)

In Tang Wei's letter to IU, it was said that through the making of this music video and the line from the song, she wondered if her eyes were really like her mother's and she really wanted to check it out. She also said that she thought about how she imagined her mom in her younger years. And she realized that this image is not clear, because she was not part of her life then and she only knows it from her father's words and photos. On the set she imagined that she met her in her younger years and suddenly realized that her mother was just like her - young, beautiful and shining on stage. I think both the song and the video express that the relationship between mom and daughter is a special bond. Something beyond friendship and beyond love. Something special. One thing continues the other. When you're a kid you're sometimes unable to understand why mom acts a certain way. You know and see mom from one side. But when you grow up, you understand her better. Because you start to see the world from her perspective. And this story repeats itself again only with another child and another mom. A amazing song and music film on the theme of the connection of women in the family and their sometimes difficult relationships on the way to understanding each other.

    I really appreciate this analysis.
I have a little different interpretation of the "hidden bodies": I think they become distant (emotionally speaking) and they want to hide even their good memory about each other. But when they see each other as "equal" women (same age), they can understand each other and embrace their true self...
I don't know if this makes sense in English 😬😅

True. Last month I asked my mom, why did it look so easy for my mom and dad raising their 4 kids, while me struggling rn...she laughed and answered "who said it was easy?" 😂

A abstract of thought without any form . IU is transitioning it into a visual and audio image and presented to a musical form without losing the entertainment side of music and philosophical side of art. She moved a big step and gave K-pop a solid support . She is a true artist. I am not surprised more performing art form from IU’s thirties era. Proud to be an Ueana.

I really enjoy your reactions and insights. I also love the song (and all things IU) and fell into that rabbit hole long ago. You mentioned watching Hotel del Luna - which is great. Please give yourself the greatest gift and watch IU in My Mister...considered by most everyone as a true masterpiece (greatest K-drama of all time). It will stick with you - in a very good way. Her film Broker was also pretty amazing.
In terms of this MV - I am also still piecing things together, but a few thoughts to build in your observations.
Song is "S H H" - which suggests one "S" and two "H" characters...and I'm kind of thinking it may be the same S character as both the daughter and the mom (just a guess) - where the S character is born in 1938 (license plate)...and we initially see the story through the eyes of her and her daughter (first H).
It's an older vehicle they are in (late 70s I think), and the apartment is also older (notice the old style phone hanging on the wall). The daughter seems to be going back to see her mom at a different time - and sitting in her mom's car, maybe going back to their older apartment. When IU looks into that door on the floor, I kind of think what she sees is that memory of her lying with her daughter...and then the daughter no longer there. Suggests something happened with the two of them.
Finally - in the scene on the street at the end...the older character and younger character appear to be the same person, separated only by time (they seem to have the same outfit and recognize one another). The outfit is also from another time (hat and gloves). It is a different vehicle - convertible, and I think an older vehicle (guess). I'm thinking perhaps this is showing IU's character as a young person - who then becomes the IU character (mom)...and also also IU's character going back in time to see herself just as her daughter seems to have gone back in time to see IU. This scene takes place after IU and her daughter embrace...and it just feels like this is IU reflecting on herself at that point as she gets even a bit older. Just a guess.

L is without question Love. IU has stated that the album has 2 Love songs and Love Wins All she dedicated to her fans. This is the other love song. Also Love is mentioned on one of the story boards just prior to the L and F chorus, as is the word Friend.
The lighting effects are significant in understanding the song, as the color effect is used to distinguish between hopes, wishes, fantasy and/or nightmare. The only time these 2 actually touch is when there is the red effect from slight when IU touched her hair to a dominate red when Tang reaches out for her mother and they she hugs her.
I agree 100% that the trap door and trunk are metaphors for the items of her mother's she hid away. First in the house a long time ago. And now being older and likely a mother herself she has a different prespective of her mother. And she has placed all those memories, keepsakes etc in the trunk of the car.
It is interesting to note that the daughter apparently did keep a few it's as we are shown 2 things hanging from the rear view mirror at the very start.

I think IU is celebrating women through history, it is a testament to her depth and vision on the world. Growing up in poverty and having to live w her grandmother and the burden of paying off her parents debt, in Korea the children become victims of having to pay off their family debt. She also suffered a lot from losing some of her closest friends to suicide i,e Jonghyun, Sulli, etc

4:56-5:49 I just want to take a moment to just completely praise hyein’s vocals for this. Her first ever collab, youngest artist to ever collab with iu, and she killed it. Hyein’s vocals are just so amazing, and her being 15 and singing like this is crazy.

    love this interpretation by poster:
    @XuST-mp1uv
In the PAST, She placed those she loved in there (so they can be with her forever) - her mother and her friend.
In the PRESENT, she spots IU, who looks very much like her mother, when she was younger. Before seeing IU, she had early spotted someone who looked like her friend, whom she (assumed that she knocked out) placed in the boot.
She would have place IU in the boot too except IU boldly approached her first.
It can be assumed the woman in the boot will be placed down there too. But IU will be her mother figure in the present and most probably live together, with IU keeping her secret...Shh
A dark theme indeed. Love the story line.
Want a darker theme: Consider she has been driving around looking out for people that resembles her mother and her friend. If this isn't her first drive, then how many people has she "collected" in there?
    IU delivers another MV movie!❤
IU has really gone all out for her fans: 4 MVs from 5 songs - 1 Fantasy, 1 Fun, 1 Dark and 1 Apocalyptic.
    Uniquely IU indeed. Respect much!
