I bought the medium size Vermont Castings Consolidated Dutch West stove back in 1983. They offered a small, medium and large stove at that time. Still use it today. The round catalytic converter is located under a thick steel cooking plate in the top of the stove. Front or side loading doors and slide out ash bin. 2 years ago I noticed the smaller stove chained to a pole out in front of a swap shop near me. I bought it for $100. It had a light film of rust, but I was able to clean it back to new condition very easily. The Brass handles, gaskets, glass, catalytic converter and ash ben were like new. Maybe 2 or 3 fires were made in this stove. Will be installing the stove in my workshop. Too bad that they don't make this design any longer, but oh well, I have 2 and they will Definitely outlast me! IMO they are the best stoves that Vermont has made! God Bless!🙋♂️
What's wrong with the name Dauntless? Fearlessness and determination. Awesome! Makes me think that it will work tirelessly to heat and packs a punch. 👍
@@embersliving The Dauntless was the dive bomber that defeated the Japanese Navy in World War II. It is a distinguished name. This stove should be proud to carry it!
I have owned Vermont stones for 30 years. Great stoves. Unfortunately the newest models are natural gas due to health issues. The old wood version was sold to a happy person.
We've had the Resolute Acclaim since 1991 and will be replacing it when we renovate. It still works, but weather, vog (volcanic emissions) and salt air here in Hawaii have taken its toll, and we did not light up the stove monthly as we were advised to do. It still works, but the finish is chipping and rusting and the inside is heaving. This looks like a good option less the cat converter. Sure like the Resolute Acclaim...Thanks for the video. Hope you don't have a hernia after moving the Intrepid!
I want this size stove but with the nice webbed doors and the side warmers. Is this their only stove that has different doors with no option for side warmers? If so, why?
A little history. The Dauntless was a British Ship built in the 1800s, HMS Dauntless. The Resolute was a British ship that got stuck up in Antarctica. It was rescued by an American whaling ship in 1850 and repaired and returned to the English Crown. Years later when the Resolute was dismantled. England built and beautiful desk out of the main beam. That desk now resides in the U.S. White House. It is known as the Resolute Desk that most Presidents set behind. So the names they were using for the stoves were famous British war ships. So that is where Old Vermont got some of the stove names.
There was also a USS Dauntless and a USS Intrepid , the HMS Defiant was a reproduction of that era used as the basis for a movie in the 60's , The resolute was indeed a british warship outfitted for arctic exploration . In fact all the stoves were named after historic ships and if you google them you will find the names were also used for vessels in Star Trek . You would think a guy selling the stoves and making videos about them would take maybe 30 seconds to learn about his product eh !
My oldest son is a History professor and I must share this story with him. How interesting the details of our shared history are when you find out more than names and dates Thanks for bringing history to life!
I finally bought and had installed my dauntless! It’s an amazing stove for sure! One question, when you to temperature to operate the catalyst and put the temp control at 50-65% why does the glass blackout and the smoke back up inside the stove? Is the catalytic stone installed improperly?
@@embersliving thank you for the quick response. The gauge showing operate catalyst. I’ll let it cool down and check install tonight. You’d hope the crew new what they were doing. We didn’t get it installed from your company.! Thank you for the help.
Did you get this figured out? I have done 2 burns to get rid of processing oils and cure paint - smelled like oil every time the temp got high. I know this will stop when those oils are totally burned off, but I also found lowering the temp control produced lots of smoke inside, blackened the glass and the back of the box - which according to the directions should stay white with proper burn temp. I am hoping this was just the oils burning off. Since I did these initial burns on chilly but not really cold days, I did keep the temp control reduced so it would not get too hot in the house - and maybe I ran it at too low a temp. I don't have a stove thermometer but plan to get one. I love the stove - just want to run it right:)
I grew up with a harman top load wood stove and the cooking grate was awsome you could have bbq in the middle of winter to bad they only make Pellet stoves now
Seriously thinking abo8ut this stove for my house. Natural gas is getting too expensive and winters get bellow 0 routinely. Especially with my wife being as cold as she is all the time.
Vermont casting is really good. also Hearthstone has been one of our best sellers these last few years with really good feed back. We have some new stove videos out, how to install, specs, and top 5 stoves!
As previously mentioned, the old Dauntless was discontinued around 1987. It was one of the most beautiful designs, but was not a serious heater. It was a modern interpretation of a Ben Franklin stove with over-sized ash lip, and frameless glass unsealed doors. The doors could be slid back into the stove and a screen installed, further reducing the efficiency. Obviously it was not EPA approved, nor meant to compete with airtights.... but man was it beautiful. I would like one just for decoration... in brown enamel!!!
This video is awesome and super helpful to shoppers like me! Thanks so much! How do you switch the FlexBurn between using/not-using the catalyst? (Do you just like physically remove the catalyst if you don’t want to use it?) Also, does the Dauntless come with a catalyst or do you need to buy the “performance pack” if you want the catalyst?
If you don’t have the performance pack, is there any reason/value in adjusting the reburn lever on the left side? Does it work like a solo stove where, even without the catalyst, it can reburn to improve efficiency?
Dauntless is the opposite of daunting. So it might mean if you are facing a particular task that might seem beyond what you can do you can look at it is very daunting. In this case the stove is dauntless meaning easy task to deal with. At least that’s what I’m thinking this name pertains to. I’m a little nervous about the Ash pan being so small. You didn’t really explain how often that Ash pan needs to be changed and how would you know except for opening it up every day and wants to keep embers from falling out the bottom while you’re cleaning out the ashes that part makes me a little nervous. How many square feet of a home does this heat.
It only gains 1% efficiency. So no. It's not worth it. Do the math in dollars. Its a consumable that needs to be replaced every so often. The dealers have a financial incentive to sell it.
~~ yes, Dauntless is kind of a dumb name for a wood stove - the US Navy has had various ships by that name - and the Star Trek universe has also used it for ships - but pretty sure this stove does not offer torpedo, depth charge or phaser packages as add-ons ..
Hello, I got this stove about one month ago. It was doing really well, it is very efficient. Unfortunately it started puffing smoke. At one point the puffing was so strong that it opened the top door and ashes flew all over. This is very scary and very concerning to me. Do you have any experience with this issue, any suggestions? Vermont Castings has no costumer service, whatsoever! The store, where I bought it, is just dismissing my concerns.
@@embersliving Thank you so much for the suggestion! I think I will try that. At the moment it is difficult to use the stove because with the damper open it gets too hot and I am not able to control the temperature. Apparently the damper has to be closed in order for the temperature control to work. But as soon as I close the damper it starts to puff.
@@embersliving Thank you very much for your recommendations. I had the draft evaluated and it is good. The problem with my stove was that the ash tray was a little loose so the fire chamber was constantly getting air from the ash tray. Apparently that was causing the puffing in the stove. Since that was adjusted the stove is working very well. The front doors also needed to be aligned. I would recommend that people having issues of puffing make sure that the doors are properly aligned and the ash tray is closing tightly.

The dauntless name was used on a previous vermont castings fireplace, more of a Franklin Stove without doors.

I did not purchase catalyst yet, can I use it still? Do I have to keep damper open at all times without catalyst?
no you can buy it later and that won't effect your air control
I would definitely use that grill insert provided it didn’t cause a greasy mess etc

Is this stove approved for use with the front doors open?
technically you can, but it won't run efficiently

sometimes the easiest fix is adding pipe length for a good draft
