Which verision of Harry's Lap Timer i need to buy if i want only check my 0-100 and 100-200 time? I just bought Rookie Edition and i can't find this. Please Help me.
LapTimer Rookie and Petrolhead are for timing laps (position based recording) only. The top level GrandPrix edition has performance testing (speed based recording) as a feature added. The app dedicated to performance testing is Harry’s Dyno. So two options: upgrade your Rookie to Petrolhead and GrandPrix afterwards, or load Harry’s Dyno from the store and return Rookie.
Looks like a great app. Im still a beginner and I was wondering if you can load a normal route as a track and have different points on the route highlighted, so you know the travel times between points?
Yes, you can set up your own "track" including timed sector splits and arbitrary positions displayed on maps and video overlays. Please keep in mid the above video is outdated and focuses on standard operation only. The latest version features a modern UI and comes with plenty of video features. For more information, please check www.gps-laptimer.de
Willow Springs International Motorsports Park is included. Please check LapTimer's home page / LapTimer Documentation / Tracks for a link to the full list (cannot post links here)...
Please check www.gps-laptimer.com/LapTimerDocumentation%20-%20Video%20Chapter.pdf for a description how to do that currently. I plan to have an even improved GoPro integration in one of the next releases. It is planned to be fully automatic (just like with the internal cam).
Harry!! Can you please tell me if you think the BAFX 34T5 bluetooth OBDII will likely work well with your android app? It has good reviews on amazon and it's only 20 dollars. Do you strongly suggest using the 80 dollar OBDLINK MX?
+Troy G It seems they use the ELM327 protocol, so it will most probably work for the LapTimer Android editions. However, it is not officially supported from my side, because I consider it a knock off device using technology not invented by the manufacturer. This low prices are possible when you do no product development and copy other's work. Mostly, this devices miss necessary and recommend certifications too. I'd not plug it into my loved car. ;-) For more information, please check www.gps-laptimer.de/compatibility/android
Harald Schlangmann thank you for supporting your app even on TH-cam comments :). I bought the supported green LX model recommended by your website. I have the ram mount, the obd2, and my Nexus 6. Hopefully I'll get some good video next weekend. I'll be running my 2015 GT-R at the Circuit of Americas in Austin TX.
3G (or data services) is not required for LapTimer standard operation. Online function will certainly not work without a connection, but data recording / lap timing / video recording is fine without (and based on GPS).
+radrcer As long as you place the smartphone outside (i.e. not into a glove box or your cloth), the internal GPS is good enough to record lap times. Ideally, a mount attached to your steering handles is used. To get beyond 0.1s accuracy, or if you want to analyze line driven / brake points / etc, an external GPS is recommended. Check www.gps-laptimer.de and follow Accessories for compatible devices.
You can find an overview on edition Rookie, Petrolhead and GrandPrix on www.gps-laptimer.de/products. Besides other differences, Rookie is the basic version, Petrolhead adds support for video recording and overlays, and GrandPrix adds support for external cams and comes with tons of additional views and charts to analyze data. Most users start with Petrolhead. You can upgrade to GrandPrix later if required.
So as you cross the start line on the nordschleife the timer and video are started simultaneously and can be viewed as the full file after in the videos section on my sony xperia?
Gutes Video!!!!
paddy6945 Export to VBO and open the file in Circuit Tools. Not sure it offers anything you don't get in LapTimer itself - but we we make options available :-)
can you use the data to overlay it on a GoPro Video or must you use your phones video camera? Also the track I race at has very bad to no cell service will this still work?
LapTimer allows all options: overlay video recorded with internal cam, or with external cam, or both, or more than 2. a second or other video will be displayed as picture in picture. A mobile connection is not required in site-just download your track set front up or use the New Track assistant to define one.
Ferrarista1988 That's supported already. You can start LapTimer manually at any time. Once you cross the start / finish line, the manual recording will be stopped and an automatic lap will be started. To get the manual option, enable Manual Timing in Settings.
I followed your instructions and it worked. Now I have another problem. I have an 8-laps-video with about 2 minutes (118 seconds) between the start of the recording and the start of the first lap (it's the time I needed from the pit exit to the start line of the first lap). I want to overlay all the data to the video, but the app only allows me to use 60 seconds before the start of the initial lap. How can I solve this?
You can overlay the manual recording to a video. It shows up as incomplete recording in your Lap List. In case it is in the wrong track section, open it from Lap List and change the POI Set / Track.
+Larry Hunt Depends on the platform. For iOS, overlaid video are transferred to the Photo app - which is great to distribute them e.g. to youtube or watching them. In case you have turned off LapTimer's access to Photos, the video will stay in LapTimer recording area. This area can be accessed both from within LapTimer ‣ Analysis ‣ Video List or by connecting the phone to the desktop, start iTunes, select the iPhone, select Apps, scroll to File Sharing and selecting LapTimer. Video (both raw and overlaid) have an .mov extension. Do not touch all other files!
Just have a quick question if I may, I thought I heard that the Novice version of Harry Lap timer was supposed to be FREE, but when I looked it up on my device, there was actually a price next to it, I mean did it use to be free and now they are charging for it?>??
Hey, I love the app, but I am having trouble overlaying the video with the data and making a video with the overlaid information. I go into Lap list and i find my lap, but I see just the raw video and only the option to play it, and there is one part that says overlaid and when i click it nothing happens. I am very confused, any help would be appreciated.
+billy thorton It looks like you switched the video type from raw to overlaid in the Video's Details. This sets a flag so LapTimer considers it overlaid already. I tried hard to keep people from switching the type (which is for maintenance only) including a warning dialog. But users sometimes choose to ignore it. ;-) The correct way to overlay a video is selecting the lap from Lap List. You will see the raw video and a button named "Overlay" directly below. This in turn will generate a new video including the overlay. In case you have switched the video type accidentally (see above), return to Video List, select the video and switch it back to "raw". Next, run the regular process.
Yes, that's actually the standard mode of operation. LT supports both fully automatic and manual lap timing. Data is recorded and can be exported to various formats including CSV, NMEA, VBO, HLPTRL, GPX, PDF.
As long as a do not purge it, a track set is stored locally. Track sets loaded are visible in Lap List: tracks with a POI set loaded show a first row with "User Track Set" or "Certified Track Set".
Just one more question if I may, you really did a faqntastic job explaing how to setup the app for like road course racing or whatever, but I have been doing autocross now for well over 10 years and was just wondering if you might be able to do a video Hopefully soon about hw to set this up for a actual autocross course, I really would appreciate alot, thanks again
Also in den Standby-Modus..
+Luke Webb-Thornton LapTimer for Android is available as Rookie, Petrolhead, GrandPrix edition - just like the iOS version is. There are some smaller differences in features, but it is mostly the same since v19. The user interface in the video above is outdated and has been renovated 2 times since then. Actually it shows the basic setup available in LapTimer Rookie already. Most users opt fro Petrolhead - which adds video functionality including overlaying.
+Harald Schlangmann Thank you, I've been waiting for this to come over to android and I'll be getting grandprix edition so I can use my gopro hero with the app :) I'll let you know how accurate the information is given with your app as I also have a data logger to. one thing G meter is it possible to inlarge the range shown as I know I already go beyond what is mostly show on the lap timers?
+Luke Webb-Thornton Accuracy depend on the GPS only. So in case you see a difference between your logger and LapTimer, you need to compare the GPSes to find out which one is correct. The range shown in the overlay is +-1.5G, the dot will move out of the circle beyond this value. Charts in LapTimer's data recording area will scale as required.
+Harald Schlangmann well a phone is never going to perform as well as the correct equipment and the GPS on a phone will always be hindered with it being within a car but it will be nice to see how a phone app and proper data logger comparison. 1.5g just under what I need but still it's only for fun :)
+Luke Webb-Thornton Yes, when talking about the internal GPS - that's true. A 1 Hz GPS plus interpolation will bring you down to 0.1 or max 0.05 seconds accuracy. But many LapTimer users add external GPS and OBD devices (see www.gps-laptimer.de/compatibility/android). The problem with dedicated devices is they have long development cycles and almost always come with dated sensor technology 2 years or older. It is hard to update dedicated hardware regularly for niche products. Opposed to this, it is easy to add a fresh external GPS every once in a while when using a modular system like LapTimer. Many users believe a smartphone solution is for the poor drivers. That's wrong. It is for innovators and technology affine user. For those wanting the best functionality, quality and connectivity. The only advantage left for dedicated system is they can be installed permanently and do not generate connection issues from wireless technologies.
Check the video around 1:00 and you will see two additional assistants: "New Track" and "Autocross". Both allow walking (or driving) the relevant positions on track (for tracks this is the position of start / finish, for AX it is the staging area and the finish line) and defying your own track. Please check LapTimer's home page in addition as it includes a tutorial how to design your complete track set using Google / Apple Maps (it is in LapTimer Documentation / Tracks. Except for AXes you will rarely need to define a track as LapTimer has included more than 500 already.
Usually by transferring the video to Photo library and syncing it to the desktop from here. In case this doesn't work due to memory constraints, try iBrowse or iFunbox. Both free desktop applications allow you to access LapTimer's Documents folder directly. All videos you find here (.mov extension) can be moved in and out as required.
LapTimer has special support for motorbikes. This includes lean angle calculation as well as special video overlays. You can't wear the phone in your pockets for several reasons: a) once you put it into your cloth GPS accuracy will degrade a lot and will not be usable for data recording b) the app needs to be active and in foreground, so the screen must not be touched accidentally c) it is dangerous to have a hard device like a smartphone next to you body on a motorbike. This means it is best to either mount the device to your steering handles / bar, or place it in a safe place with an external GPS attached.
+arjun gowda In case a track is missing, please drop us a note to Tracks@gps-laptimer.de with as much information as you have available. We will add it to the repository. But you can define your own track too: goto Prepare Race and press New Track. The assistant will guide you through the process.
All smartphones available today come with a 1 Hz GPS. Using it with LapTimer allows timing accuracy of better than 0.05s for 95% of laps recorded. You will not see the difference to a higher update rate GPS in video overlays neither. However, in case you want to have a slightly higher timing accuracy and want to analyze line driven, braking points, etc, you need to opt for an external GPS. Options available range from 5 to 50 Hz. See www.gps-laptimer.de/compatibility/android or www.gps-laptimer.de/compatibility/ios for compatible options.
Ggf.
Yes, you can use any Edition for this. You can use either the built in assistants (New Track / Autocross) or do a full definition following Tracks on www.gps-laptimer.de/documentation
Schaue ansonsten mal ins Forum.
Sorry Harry, I was talking about the setup, it said it did not recognize but then I saw where I had to check "New" vehicle. Pretty simple but I'm not very technical. Thanks for the VERY prompt reply!

Hello Harry, are you doing a compare of current position to a predefined range of latitude/longitude per track?
Any tutorial's that are more recent? This was over 8 years ago. I supposed the software has changed in 8 years.
Harry!!

Hallo Harald,

Would it be possible to start the recording when I want? (for example when I leave the pits).
You can't without adding the "telemetry" from pit to start (i.e. overlay the "incomplete" manual lap). You can add up to a minute of intro only.
Harald Schlangmann ah it is so bad. How do I add telemetry from the pit exit?
You can overlay the manual recording to a video. It shows up as incomplete recording in your Lap List. In case it is in the wrong track section, open it from Lap List and change the POI Set / Track.
Where does Harry's send the video after completing the overlay? I've converted a few laps but no idea where they end up - iTunes somewhere?

It is hard to update dedicated hardware regularly for niche products. Opposed to this, it is easy to add a fresh external GPS every once in a while when using a modular system like LapTimer. Many users believe a smartphone solution is for the poor drivers. That's wrong. It is for innovators and technology affine user. For those wanting the best functionality, quality and connectivity. The only advantage left for dedicated system is they can be installed permanently and do not generate connection issues from wireless technologies.
how would you record laps on an unrecognized lap though?
Check the video around 1:00 and you will see two additional assistants: "New Track" and "Autocross". Both allow walking (or driving) the relevant positions on track (for tracks this is the position of start / finish, for AX it is the staging area and the finish line) and defying your own track. Please check LapTimer's home page in addition as it includes a tutorial how to design your complete track set using Google / Apple Maps (it is in LapTimer Documentation / Tracks. Except for AXes you will rarely need to define a track as LapTimer has included more than 500 already.
sounds good then i might splash out and pick it up
how do i transfer the video's to my pc. iphone and icloud memory are full.
thanks
Usually by transferring the video to Photo library and syncing it to the desktop from here. In case this doesn't work due to memory constraints, try iBrowse or iFunbox. Both free desktop applications allow you to access LapTimer's Documents folder directly. All videos you find here (.mov extension) can be moved in and out as required.
Is this just country specific? Will this work in any country ?
Yes, we have a world wide database of tracks and GPS / GLONASS positions services are available world wide too.
Danke!
Hey Harry,
Rowdies it work with motorcycles, can you have the phone in the inside pocket of your reach suit?
Thank you.
Best regards.
Guilherme
LapTimer has special support for motorbikes. This includes lean angle calculation as well as special video overlays. You can't wear the phone in your pockets for several reasons: a) once you put it into your cloth GPS accuracy will degrade a lot and will not be usable for data recording b) the app needs to be active and in foreground, so the screen must not be touched accidentally c) it is dangerous to have a hard device like a smartphone next to you body on a motorbike. This means it is best to either mount the device to your steering handles / bar, or place it in a safe place with an external GPS attached.
+Harald Schlangmann thank you Harry!
hi can i use this lap timer in india
Yes, in any country.
i mean to say since map load is unavailable for the track in south india i ask so
how do i load it anyways , pls could u guide me
thank u
+arjun gowda In case a track is missing, please drop us a note to Tracks@gps-laptimer.de with as much information as you have available. We will add it to the repository. But you can define your own track too: goto Prepare Race and press New Track. The assistant will guide you through the process.
super
do i need a external gps device for it to work coz mobile got 5mhz
All smartphones available today come with a 1 Hz GPS. Using it with LapTimer allows timing accuracy of better than 0.05s for 95% of laps recorded. You will not see the difference to a higher update rate GPS in video overlays neither. However, in case you want to have a slightly higher timing accuracy and want to analyze line driven, braking points, etc, you need to opt for an external GPS. Options available range from 5 to 50 Hz. See www.gps-laptimer.de/compatibility/android or www.gps-laptimer.de/compatibility/ios for compatible options.
Ggf.
Hi, with rookie version can i upload or create a new lap track?
Yes, you can use any Edition for this. You can use either the built in assistants (New Track / Autocross) or do a full definition following Tracks on www.gps-laptimer.de/documentation
Schaue ansonsten mal ins Forum.
Why does Petrol Head not recognize my Porsche?
Why and how should it recognize your Porsche? Are you talking about an OBD connection?
Sorry Harry, I was talking about the setup, it said it did not recognize but then I saw where I had to check "New" vehicle. Pretty simple but I'm not very technical. Thanks for the VERY prompt reply!
Does any of the laptimer Apps have the Norisring in it?
