Cant wait for my Unifi NAS Getting mine at the beginning of January 🎉 Got already a server… so no need for apps. As a photographer the UNAS-Pro sharing capabilities is amazing.
Yay love this video and your ZC Pro callout. I went a bit bigger in the end - an EPYC9115 based rack mount to partner with the ZC as a ZFS snapshot store :-)
Got a Lockerstor 4 Gen2 about a month ago. First NAS I've ever owned. You can do so much with it. I use it as a backup location, User storage location (with VPN to access over WAN), Plex server, Media storage, AI powered object recognition server, etc... I'm still learning so much and with all this running it's still go plenty of power in reserve.
I picked one up but seeing even glitchy text errors off the bat was not ideal and felt it wasn’t going to be a long term solution. I did enjoy the layout and was sad to see these glitches but yeah those small errors weren’t ideal so I returned it and continued using Unraid.
@@Cary_mac I haven't noticed any errors myself, whereabouts did you see them? I'll have a look and see if I see them. Although mine is on the latest OS version so these may have been fixed already.
@@Cary_mac Yeah I got the exact same one. Had a look but can't see anything. I started on ADM 4.3.2 and now on 4.3.3, both are very new so it seems they fixed any glitches that may have been in order versions.
I looked at a few options and ran a few test setups utilising unraid and truenas. Due to wanting a nas mainly for plex and already in the ubiquiti ecosystem I ended up with the unas. So far really happy with it. Just need to build a new rack mounted server using consumer components.
I know everyone is raving about the Jonsbo N5, but I was wondering if you've seen the JMCD 12S4 or 9s2. What are your thoughts there for a NAS case, since they both have actual drive sleds.
Although not as bleeding edge as some of the ones you picked, I'd expected the 2 and 4 disk Aoostar to get an honorable mention. They're another *young upstart*, that's been knocking designs out of the park especially on price/performance. And like Minisforum they've been battling to keep many in stock.
I do see your point, and the GEM10/12 are pretty sweet too - but they have much bigger things in the pipeline for next year (lincstation too) that I reckon will make it into this video in 2025!
It would be a great help if you could do some reliability testing especially longevity. Some people report that their NAS just packs-up after a couple of years of use or less.
Should be live this Friday. However, as I state in the video, it's more about the case build, than the CPU/Mobo choice - as there are too many types of build users might use. Hereford power consumption would be massively relative. Also, I bet most users do not fully populated this system - it's built for scalability (not just HDD scaling either). Sorry if the video lacks what you need, but I hope you enjoybit
Just wondering if you tried to ZFS with this? Bought a CWWK mini PC with TrueNAS and the ZFS array keep dropping out. I think the NVME switch cannot handle the traffic.
I'd argue the Fractal Define 7 is a better DIY case; it doesn't have hot-swappable bays, but has excellent cooling, build quality, noise dampening etc. :)
@AndyJMacLeod I think the non XL version can do about 14 drives with all the mounting spots (getting their extra drive bay + attachments... you gotta buy attachents) Nice to have multiple choices though, when I built my NAS a few months ago, only the Define supported this many drives as most cases only go up to 8 bays.
I have had the xl for a year now and it's been a great case. Crammed it with 7 wd red 10 tbs around a 4090 strix stuffed in the the middle. Been a great plex, storage server along with couch gaming setup. Now in the process of racking all my stuff up. Got the unas still in box to setup.
Analysis Paralysis. That's where I am. I've watched a bunch of your videos trying to figure out what I need/want. I've even gone out and bought a 10G switch (which ends up only having SFP+ ports which I didn't realize - and I have no use for unless I go buy some steekin' adapter). I've gone back and forth about Thunderbolt (I have T4 on my Mac M1 Studio). I still don't understand (even after watching your video about why USB 4 is such a big deal), how T4 could help me over 10G. I don't get why I'd want both. But the biggest thing that confounds me at this point is that I don't get why having a 10G network (or T4 for that matter) does ANYTHING for me, because my fastest hard drive can only read a whopping 268 MBs per second. Isn't THAT my limiting factor on the "speed" of getting data to/from my NAS? It's only me - I don't have a team or group. I do have some faster non-NAS storage on SSDs and have ordered a couple OWC USB4 enclosures for them (which I really am hoping will be better than the
Greetings from Christmas Day (0630). Wishing you and your significant others all the very best for the Festive season [Christmas, Hanukkah, etc.] and I hope you have a good 2025.
Interesting choices ... not something I would've chosen. The ZimaCube is 4-Grands with specs of an AliExpress NAS that go for half the price. I consider the Jonsbo N5 a massive failure of engineering too. All they had to do was improve their N2/N3 design to fit mATX and full height PCIe slots or go full flash. They did neither, instead made their cases even bigger going full overboard. It also does not have any sort of dust proctection but tons of open space where dust can get in. Your reviews are usually really helpfull but your choices here going against most of my own. Thanks for the accurate reviews - we can agree to disagree here on a respectful level. Not something I could say for a lot reviewers nowadays ;)
Tbh they were so close to making the cut - but they were already promoting their system in late 2023 build up stuff + already had the DX series in china before hand. It's a big, big move into NAS this year, I admit, but they still need more global availability and their software to evolve further (watch them at CES next month though...)
HL15 and HL45 mentions should be reserved for the type of sponsored plugs that @craftcomputing does....those not making it on the list only reinforces the notion that those were influencer junk.
That's the Aiffro K100. It was a little overpriced at launch (covered this in my review), but has since come down in price and is arguably more appealing now
Im waiting on them to make a proper amd version and I'll cluster them. Not willing to invest in a 13th gen Intel chip with their issues. Everything else is great but the same feature set rocking an epyc 4004 chip would be the ultimate SMB cluster machine.
The only things I was CERTAIN of seeing this title before I watched the video was that there was something Chinese CCP made, that crap kickstarter brands would be there and that you would be fanboi'ing over Asustor ........so predictable Robbie

Any thoughts re the Mac mini? Pretty impressive mini pc.
Off topic: Any idea how to sync a Synology folder to UNAS Pro? Would be curious about to know …
Subscribed, oh and I have the Minis-01 :)
Local AI: with the big Jonesboro case one might be able to mount an Nvidia Jetson $249 board as a coprocessor? Or just have it as a network box.
I'm afraid that you cannot, as it is a SMB.
However, you can connect a full height GPU .
On the N4, well, a half height GPU.

I agree it's a solid box - but would you say it changed/surprised the NAS landscape much in 2024? That's the benchmark here tbh.
Lets see if synology does anything for ces?

@nascompares well then, since you have been so good this year I will put a good word for you to Santa, may you have a Merry Happy Christmas !
Curious why Ugreen didn't make it into the list.
They should be on the List, because of the N100 CPU..
@@ws13bf You have the top of the range with better CPU's, no?

For those who like the Jonsbo cases but are less than chuffed with their trays, one could probably 3D print something to improve upon the design.
Why the ms-o1 with intel instead of ms-a1 with amd??
Tbh...10Gbe X2, USB4 X2, PCIe x16, 3 m.2 slots (that I have the upgrade card to make it into x6)... That's a good start.
Yea, so sad the ms-a1 just does not hit the mark... if it had the same ports it would be a banger mini pc
