From Raptor Resource Project June 16th 2024 " We are sad to report that the Decorah North nest came down this morning after heavy rain added weight to the nest tree branches. The nest tree support branches had been deteriorating and it was just a matter of time before something happened. We are thankful that DN17 and DN18 both survived and, although it looked like DN18 (perched to the right), could have been in the mix of branches coming down, DN18 is looking good, navigating through the wet grass and being discovered by cattle. DN17 remained in the air through the event and is also looking good. We hope for a normal post-fledge development stage in the coming weeks for DN17 and DN18. We will be monitoring them by camera and boots on the ground as necessary. It is too soon to tell what our plan is for any nest work since the tree is in the slow process of dying. We will be developing a plan in the coming weeks. Until then, we are looking forward to some extended time with Mr. North, DNF, and our two precious eaglets!" ♥♥

Dang! I am so glad they weren’t still babies at this point as some serious injuries could’ve been had. Since they have fledged already at least they will be able to hang out in other trees with mom and dad. Maybe that dying tree should be taken out so they weren’t tempted to rebuild in the same place? Gosh, timing is EVERYTHING!! Such a shame to see this happen but so thankful the eaglets are older and will probably be fine. Fingers and talons crossed. It will be interesting to see where they build their new nest next season. Glad RRP has boots on the ground and can give us updates. Stay safe kidz! ❤

What a sad day it is for the Decorah North Eagle family losing their nest/tree since the very strong and a lot of rainstorms too. I’m sure with a strong momma Decorah Mom and a wonderful dad Mr. North too will look over her E’s will definitely make sure they will be fed strong and ready for leaving the homestead when that time comes. As long as they can be together I’m sure the Eaglets will be great and watched over by maybe people in the sky or boots on the ground but also the parents who always know best for their babies. Oh, no, not again! I remember when the heart shaped nest collapsed here a few years ago. Thankfully the eaglets are safe and unharmed. Looks like a HEALTHY LIVE tree is necessary for the new DN nest rebuild now.

They're safe and D18 is getting around better. He took quite a tumble to the ground. D17 was more fortunate since her side of the nest tree had an open area for her to fly off in. Hate the nest was lost but it served very well for 8 years. Thanks Lady Hawk.
It's good that our eaglets can fly. There could have been a tragedy if this had happened earlier. I'm glad the kids are okay. I hope that the parents will continue to feed them for a while until they learn get food. I pray for them. Thanks for the video and the description of the situation. ❤

I just found this! Absolutely incredible! "The average weight of a bald eagle's nest is one ton, or 2,000 pounds, but they can weigh up to 6,000 pounds. Nests in Alaska, where the eagle population is higher, can weigh up to three tons. For comparison, bald eagle nests can weigh more than bears, horses, young hippos, rhinos, cars, and some trucks or tractors."
So sad to see a nest destroyed. I do hope they can come up with nesting Ideas to keep this nest area on camera and not have them leave to a different area. So glad everyone is ok.
Oh man! 18 said he’s not ready for all this grown up stuff yet. Lol. I’m so glad they are both ok. The Redding, Ca eagles nest tree died last year and there was no shade and the temps there reached 105, for many days. Luna fledged and is on the ground on a little island with fresh water and lots of trees and shade, where mom and dad are feeding her. Sol wasn’t so lucky and passed away 2 days ago 💔💔💔 I’m sorry about this tree and nest but so grateful they are ok 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I had the feeling that this would be the last year. The nest is huge and laying on horizontal dead branches. I’m glad the youngsters have fledged and aren’t dependent on the nest. But that poor family of eagles. 😖

You could clearly see that DN18 managed to escape the danger 😳 What a tragedy 😢 At least both siblings can fly already 🙏 I am sure all will be fine and parents will manage to feed them without nest. Both DN17 & DN18 are fine and will be taken care of by Mr North and DNF. The parents will be taking food to them on the ground, or on a tree branch as DNF has already done since the nest collapse! Read my pinned comment in regards to the nest and what RRP will be doing!
Whilst losing the nest is a challenge to this intrepid eagle family, fortunately the eaglets are of an age to not need the nest to survive. Mom and Dad will get creative, I’m sure, in ensuring that DN17 and DN18 continue to thrive. GOOD NEWS last week RRP went up to the old tree and reconstructed a new starter nest for next year for our Iowa Eagles. They did have to build one fake tree limb to replace one that supported the old nest. Prayers that the eagles will continue to build and nest next year in the new nest. The nest was too heavy even before the rain. The tree is almost entirely dead. It's pure luck the branch didn't break weeks ago.

GOOD NEWS last week RRP went up to the old tree and reconstructed a new starter nest for next year for our Iowa Eagles. They did have to build one fake tree limb to replace one that supported the old nest. Prayers that the eagles will continue to build and nest next year in the new nest. Yes, they had fledged, but less than a week before, if I am not mistaken.
Why in the world was a platform built under this nest? Especially on a dead tree? Human interference. Smh!!

Dang! I am so glad they weren’t still babies at this point as some serious injuries could’ve been had. Since they have fledged already at least they will be able to hang out in other trees with mom and dad. Maybe that dying tree should be taken out so they weren’t tempted to rebuild in the same place? I guess that wouldn’t make much sense, huh? Thank you for the update, Lady Hawk! 💜
