    Thanks a million for yours, Mr Casual DIY. The Lidl one went into the dustbin, I took a deep breath and went for a huge one from the local Machine Mart store. The budget end of the professional range, if you know what I mean, and nearly £500. But I'm greatly pleased with my purchase, it's even bigger than the one you demonstrated, it's quite well made, massively heavy and drills accurately, even for tapping out very small threads. The only thing I added was a heavy drill vice. As the saying goes, buy things once; you'll be glad you did. You video is great, not a trace of a personal ego just showing off to the lads

      @@CasualDIY It's a 'Clarke Metalworker, but's quite similar to the Titan you reviewed, a bit larger than yours and has the 2MY socket, which for me was one of the killer features. Funnily enough, your Titan was very much near the top on my 'top of the charts' list. This one has a cast iron table, a robust belt tensioner, and no silly and fiddly 3rd pulley feature just to get a few extra speeds I'll never need. Also a really good rack and pinion that gives the table a huge range of height in a matter of seconds. My only regret? Not paying a little extra for the floor standing version; it's so heavy it needs a massively strong bench to take the weight! Cheers and thanks a million!

    No run out and the ability to square the table to the bit and a pillar drill covers the basics. So many don't. Good update Tomas.

    Hi Thomas
    Good honest review, I have exactly the same drill, works well and power is adequate for both steel and woof,
    However one issue. The table is not cast iron, it is cast aluminium, which I find does flex a little, this is one downside I see to this tool, the other is as you correctly say is the ridiculous screw for the speed change cover, which if you listen more closely is where most of the noise comes from, reattached lid with a thumb screw and line the cover with rubber to damp it and it’s as quiet as a rolls Royce ( well not really THAT quiet)
    But good work and again very truthful.

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now you got me puzzled I was convinced it was cast iron, felt like it anyway. But I can say there is any flex in mine. I'll have to double check that now 🤔

    • @silv425
      @silv425 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Thomas.
      conkat is correct about the table being aluminium. It does also flex a little but if you take it easy while drilling it's not a major problem.
      You need to think about the lyrics from Leon Hayward's song - "Don't push it. Don't force it. Let it happen naturally." In other words, if you apply steady pressure and use the correct spindle speed for the drill size and the material you're drilling through, you shouldn't have problems with table flex.

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@silv425 yes you are absolutely correct. Well that one goes to the books lol but I have not noticed any flex in mine, maybe I'm naturally gentle lol 👍😁
      Thanks for pointing that out 👍😁

    • @ethelmini
      @ethelmini 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd read that,
      I wonder if you could replace it? Is the table arm more substantial & what diameter is its stem?

    You really haven’t done enough reviewing in detail giving it a a thorough review and understanding its versatility. Does the material melt. Ease of use. Variety of materials under different speeds. What drill bits to use. Where to get the best drill bits. Eg I agree the turning handles on cheap machines are all prone to coming off and the length of arm spindle gives little leverage for harder materials. Lock thread may not work. Does the drill Chuck hold smaller drill bits?

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      I would argue that most of the things you mentioned are rather for a video called "How to use a pillar drill" rather than a video review. The smallest bit I had installed was 4mm. But I can't see a reason why it would not hold even smaller than that, the chuck closes fully.

  • @Photo-Ninja
    @Photo-Ninja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What is funny, that always when I'm planning to buy some tool for my workshop and doing a huge amount of research, I always finish here:) Which mean that your research is so perfect. I'm always looking for the best tool I can possibly buy at a very affordable price, but the answer is that there is no tool which will perform well for this kind of money.
    Especially the tools like a pillar drill. I was thinking to get the Parkside PTBM 710 A1 the one with no belt as I like the way it works, but the reviews are not so good so I think the one you have here is just the best budget pillar drill I can possibly get at the moment in the UK. Well, it is twice a budget drill but it works.

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hehe. I have to say that this is a beast of a pillar drill. I know it's a not the cheapest but what it offers can compare with the much more expensive drills. You get a lot of power and many speed settings. And after the years of usage it still performs perfectly👍

    Good to know the Titan is a half decent machine. I bought the Ferrex one from Aldi last year and am now considering getting a better one as there is play in the quill as you mentioned, although I did find an adjustment which has improved it, plus the table flexes a bit & various parts rattle from vibration! The Clarke drills from Machine Mart seem to have good reviews.

    • @CasualDIY

    Thanks for this review - quite rare for this tool. I was really hoping it would be the drill for me, but it is just way too huge for my space. I only need something to drill straight holes in wood, powerful enough to drive a 50mm forstner or a 150mm hole saw. Tricky finding something in UK as these are not a big market... Any suggestions Tomasz?

    I had the same poor experience with a Lidl pillar drill, the bearings are weak, it's very noisy, drills do not run true, the belt drive often slips until the belt shreds into pieces and burns out, and the motor is not powerful enough. I will have to choose a more expensive one to replace it, thanks for your very helpful video. I work mostly with metal, especially mild steel, reconditioning components for very old-time cars, such as shock absorbers and starter motors. Do you think that this model is strong enough to cope? Can you also confirm that the chuck uses a No 2 Morse taper (2MT)? If so, would I be able to mount any tool which has a 2MT shank? This is important because I sometimes need to use precision metalworking reamers at the lowest speed for finishing holes to accurate sizes to accept bronze bushes, etc. Reamers larger than about 12-15mm often use a Morse taper, not a parallel shank, so they can only be used in a machine that has that feature. You cannot hold a morse taper in any other way. You have made a video review that is far better than many reviews on TH-cam, which are often badly edited and far, far too long

    Hi. Enjoyed that. I got the very same drill but on mine I wouldn't say that the drill bits are not wobbling. I do get a bit of play on the whole chuck assembly so I'm wondering if that's something that can be fixed/adjusted. I'd appreciate your feedback. Like you, I was using it for couple of years now, mostly for metalwork as I build custom motorcycles, and I can't fault it.

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว
