I think it has to be the second one. It does say that he cursed as captain of The Shadow. I think of it as something like Davy Jones in POTC, where he isn't able to set foot on land or something.

I like the subtle effect of your eyes being hidden. Any time a character does this in movies or books, it always adds an extra layer of mystery to the scene. Maybe the real reason behind this is simply because you don't want your face fully out there, but I also love all the comments that talk about the possible lore behind hiding your eyes being hidden. Lore seems like to me that the captain and his crew searched hard for "The Shadow" which seems to be a ship, perhaps with its own crew and/or rumors of wealth on board, and they succeed, but as the captain attempts to take the helm as said in the song (to steer the ship and take command of it) the ship itself came alive, strung up his crew infront of him and took his eyes, making him the captain of the ship. Now he seems to be warning others that come to basically attempt to do what he did, as he seems basically enslaved to be captain of the ship for potentially eternity based on how the curse works. Honestly, I love this song and can't wait until the TV series he said is going to be made!
As an author currently working on a Pirate themed historical fiction story, this song is perfect motivation. I've been listening to this on repeat as I write and it's fabulous. @destinyconceicao4082 I'm thinking along the lines of monster house style, the movie where the dudes wife basically haunted and became the house, the Shadow sounds to me like a spirit which with everyone coming at her in an attempt to take her for their own, perhaps a gentler touch is in order to tame the rage so to speak

@@anapaulo4 The ship herself is the shadow, the banshee is simply trying to warn them away from the ship! In folklore they may wail and shriek if someone is approaching their likely death, which is what she is doing here! Furthering evidence is some say banshees come from a woman murdered, so it's possible the shadow took her life and now she attempts to warn others from sharing her fate.

This is absolutely amazing. I can't even put it into words. My favourite part is I know the flat cap is your thing, but it fits this song so well because it feels like you were actually blind the whole time and it was foreshadowing. Especially as you say about being blinded you sort ot snap your head around a few times like searching in the dark as if blind. Intended or not, such an incredible song.

chills , just chills. i think i just found the song for a character of mine ( a roleplay character ) it fits her so well. She's a siren of a different sort , able to traverse land and sea whos based on Circe from greek myth. she is able to bring forth storms and raging tides , and is very spiteful indeed. Many thought they could have her only to meet their end many by watery grave. so this just fits her so much on top of being a total bop.

i could be wrong but i LOVE to imagine it as someone going in to find a ship with the greatest of treasures but enough curses to create legends. and that when they find it its just this MASSIVE pirate boat completely black and tattered , larger than the island its perched on. its still enough to be dead when they board until the captain tries to touch the helm or steering wheel of the shadow. when suddenly something grabs his arm, lightning flashes and his crew is hung up like mortal kombat decor as some kinda curse consumes the captain, taking his eyes and making him a perminant captain of the shadow, which now steers the ship in any direction it wants haunting the seas looking for more victims to feast on while the blinded captain isnt able to escape. like some good old pirates ghost story kinda stuff. again it could just be helm of like a crown or something thats being told. but i just love the idea of this! that. i LOVE to wait for the part where he says "all was well...until i tried to take her helm..." and plaster it on 1.25 speed right after. cause the consequence of him taking the helm sounds SO MENNACING sped up like that!

I like the subtle effect of your eyes being hidden. Any time a character does this in movies or books, it always adds an extra layer of mystery to the scene. Maybe the real reason behind this is simply because you don't want your face fully out there, but I also love all the comments that talk about the possible lore behind hiding your eyes being hidden. Not only does it add mystery but it also adds an ominous/foreboding feeling to anything they say.
Lore seems like to me that the captain and his crew searched hard for "The Shadow" which seems to be a ship, perhaps with its own crew and/or rumors of wealth on board, and they succeed, but as the captain attempts to take the helm as said in the song (to steer the ship and take command of it) the ship itself came alive, strung up his crew infront of him and took his eyes, making him the captain of the ship.
Now he seems to be warning others that come to basically attempt to do what he did, as he seems basically enslaved to be captain of the ship for potentially eternity based on how the curse works.
Honestly, I love this song and can't wait until the TV series he said is going to be made!
As an author currently working on a Pirate themed historical fiction story, this song is perfect motivation. I've been listening to this on repeat as I write and it's fabulous. The feeling of listening to this is unexplainable. I couldn't concentrate on the lyrics but at the same time I was seeing all the visuals in my minds eye?? It could be a ship indeed, but then again the song says "the banshee cried 'turn back'" so I assume it's a woman aboard a phantom ship!

In folklore they may wail and shriek if someone is approaching their likely death, which is what she is doing here! Furthering evidence is some say banshees come from a woman murdered, so it's possible the shadow took her life and now she attempts to warn others from sharing her fate.

My favourite part is I know the flat cap is your thing, but it fits this song so well because it feels like you were actually blind the whole time and it was foreshadowing. Especially as you say about being blinded you sort ot snap your head around a few times like searching in the dark as if blind. Intended or not, such an incredible song.

chills , just chills. i think i just found the song for a character of mine ( a roleplay character ) it fits her so well. She's a siren of a different sort , able to traverse land and sea whos based on Circe from greek myth. she is able to bring forth storms and raging tides , and is very spiteful indeed. Many thought they could have her only to meet their end many by watery grave. so this just fits her so much on top of being a total bop.

"ALL HANDS!!!" The captain screamed above the thrashing the sea gave our vessel as a storm was brewing overhead.
We sailors all piled onto deck and scrambled for the wildly flying ropes and moorings.
I yelled as the skin on me hands tore open as I grabbed onto a bundle of wildly-swinging ropes, then with a roar, I pulled with the power of the God of the Sea and saw the majestic beauty we we're hunting as the sails turned back into place.
A black hull appeared beside our ship, but as soon as it appeared before me eyes, it was gone.
But the sea was our enemy here as a mass of dark silhouettes rose from under the waves stirred up by the storm.
Each one moved like a serpent as they wrapped their shadowed forms around our hull and mast.

I have had this song in my head since I found it. Beautiful shanty. It also gave me inspiration for a character story in a game I'm playing.
Fun fact, if this song is interpreted using actual sailing mythology he's describing the ship being hit with a hurricane and navigating to the eye (calm as if by spell) to then be hit by the eye wall (the shadow) where the sails came alive and hung his crew before sinking his ship.

i could be wrong but i LOVE to imagine it as someone going in to find a ship with the greatest of treasures but enough curses to create legends. and that when they find it its just this MASSIVE pirate boat completely black and tattered , larger than the island its perched on. its still enough to be dead when they board until the captain tries to touch the helm or steering wheel of the shadow. when suddenly something grabs his arm, lightning flashes and his crew is hung up like mortal kombat decor as some kinda curse consumes the captain, taking his eyes and making him a perminant captain of the shadow, which now steers the ship in any direction it wants haunting the seas looking for more victims to feast on while the blinded captain isnt able to escape. like some good old pirates ghost story kinda stuff. again it could just be helm of like a crown or something thats being told. but i just love the idea of this!
that. i LOVE to wait for the part where he says "all was well...until i tried to take her helm..." and plaster it on 1.25 speed right after. cause the consequence of him taking the helm sounds SO MENNACING sped up like that!
